You should obviously still get the alternatives... Them “getting better” isn’t something you should a car super car purchase on unless money is truly no object
This is a massive and very much needed leap forward for Maserati, this give me hope for their future but what has yet to be proven is build quality and reliability over time. Ferrari improved in this respect greatly over the past 20 years and Maserati needs to catch up
Am I an asshole for hoping this follows the typical maserati depreciation curve at least for a little while so I can swipe one before people realize it is good?
630hp. 3 litres. That's 210hp per litre. Do people understand how unfathomably impressive that is in a modern supercar? Maserati, Ferrari, I don't care who designed it. Well done on that Netuno engine! (The Pista makes 182 hp/l and the Ford GT makes 185hp/l by comparison)
It’s not really that impressive in a turbocharged car. The Evo X FQ-440 had 220hp/L and the Mercedes A45 has 208. Ferrari F40 LM had nearly 250 30 years ago.
@@daveputtock1329 Not in production yet. Only a concept for now. It will only be impressive if they can actually make it work as a production car and provide good reliability.
12:45 This discussion about how you can feel the transmission shift should be a commercial that every Maserati MC20 salesperson shows to their potential customers. It’s quite a distinction from Porsche, the emotion of driving. A great selling point that should not be overlooked.
Or how you can't shift manually often enough because the fools put the paddles on the steering column where they can only be reached when driving in a straight line, instead of the steering wheel where they can always be reached.....deal killer.
Absolutely beautiful car, but let's be honest, Maserati has never had problems with styling. For years it's been the only reason to even consider owning one.
When I can blow away these Maserati sedans with a simple IS38 turbo, tune, downpipe, and intercooler, on my MK7 GTI, I have become very bored with the Maserati brand. This new car is a breath of fresh air for me regarding this brand.
I literally cannot recall the last time I said "That is a PRETTY car!" Car design has gotten so edgy that they stopped looking good, they just look "interesting" or "cool". Nice to see a true pretty car on the road again.
@@Boomtowndogs I quite like the look of the Emira and this guy. I'd gladly take either on looks. Neither are garish, but they look elegant and purposeful, IMO. Of course you could buy 3.5 Emiras for one of these, which means I'd end up with the Emira unless I won the lottery. OK, I'd still be in my Civic unless I won the lottery, but you know what I mean.
It’s gorgeous! I’m surprised the entrainment interface is quick and smooth. Maybe the boutique manufacturers can finally have what the big manufacturers have had…? I’ve been rooting for Maserati since I first read about the Cambiocorsa and then the Birdcage reboot years ago. It’s nice to see Maserati do what they do best.
@@nickhanscome I agree completely. I'll take a 3rd party generic infotainment system in a car like this. The average infotainment system in new cars is pretty good, so for me it just has to meet that standard. Like you said, I'd rather the additional development dollars go into the driving experience.
@@paxrek Anything with a full on carbon fiber chassis is going to be up there. Even the Huracan doesn't have that, and the weight difference would be a big advantage. Still, the Huracan has a demonic NA V10, so it still wins in my book. What they should do is offer a non-turbo'd version of this at 2/3s the price.
You’re talking about 5 years and a lot of miles. But might even go up if EV kills the future fun petrohead cars. This might be amount the last of the new great petrohead cars!
Im a tech at a central florida Maserati/Alfa Romeo dealer. Today, I got a chance to drive a 2022 Maserati MC20 for the first time. Im really impressed with the ride quality of this car. Unlike most sports cars, it doesnt beat you up. It feels perfectly tuned. Kind of a pain to get in and out of but once youre in it.....its SO COMFY!! SUPER PUNCHY and the handling is razor sharp but it feels like sedan! If I had the money I would definately buy an MC20. Im not too much of a fan of the turbo sounds..it is kind of loud as the intakes are right behind the left rear of your head, and if you over run some rocks or stones in the road, the noise is horrible as the stones hit the carbon tub....that drives me nuts. But other than that....great car!
This might be the first supercar that has a genuinely great infotainment system. Android Automotive OS is such a gamechanger for software, it's a huge win for Maserati to be in a leading position within their segment for the first time in what seems like a while. Although this iteration of Android Automotive OS seems very barebones, Volvo's future infotainment (and Polestar's current) is the best example of what can be done.
Someone replied to me that since it’s a Stellantis product, it’s a Maserati branded UConnect. This is a good thing, as it gets universal praise in Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep.
Zack's descriptions and similes regarding driving dynamics are on point. Really helps me imagine the differences in feel between these cars I'll never drive. Great video guys.
its the best looking supercar in the world... Would take this over the competition based on looks as long as the its close in driving dynamics, which it sounds like it is.
FINALLY reviews of these things are out. Feels like forever since it was first announced. I wonder if Ferrari gave Maserati the V6, then regretted it and put out the 296.
Maserati claims this is a totally new, proprietary, in-house design. I don't have the engineering background to be able to say whether they are telling the truth or lying, but when their engines came from Ferrari, they bragged about that. And now they are bragging that the engine specifically doesn't come from Ferrari.
@@TheSmokingTire The block is the same as the one in Alfa Romeo Guilia. Which is a Ferrari V8 with 2 cylinders chopped off. But other than that, it's all new.
@@papa_pt there are a lot of consideration to make. A 120 degree v6 will be much wider, and so putting turbos on the side would be difficult in a small car like this. Idk how much that actually matters in this case, but just saying there's more to making decisions than just "this is the best possible way to make a v6"
Maserati should have had something like this ready to roll when Ferrari left the FCA stable. They should focus high-end purpose-built two-seaters and maybe a 2+2 GT and leave the entry-luxury sedan/CUV market to Alfa and DS and whoever else in the Stellantis portfolio is making them.
@@stevemiller1626 Maserati was already heated toward "nothing" by trying to chase the mid-luxury market. And now that it's part of the Stellantis mega-stable with that market already covered more competently by other brands, it's a dead marque walking if it can't earn its keep. And I think they're more likely to do that with low-volume, high-margin niche vehicles than chasing volume sales. In a time when the industry can't seem to make high-end cars fast enough to satisfy the consumer appetites of the plutocrat-class, going big while there's still just enough brand equity left to do it seems like the smarter bet.
Sounds like an Italian NSX. I'd take one. Also sounds like Ferrari used this as a test for the possibility for a turboed V6, which seems to be the future.
Maserati has the heritage, older than Lamborghini, Ferrari and McLaren, they were winning races before any of the others even existed! They won the INDY500 twice before any of the others even were driving!
10:55 did you get a little airborne? lol I instantly feel in love with the looks when it was unveiled. Would be on the list if it weren't for the price!
Great review best one I’ve seen! I have one coming in February and I can’t wait now! I own some Alfa Guilia and Stelvio Quadrifoglios now and the MC20 motor seems to sound somewhat similar to my Alfas because I have catless exhaust with 3 inch tubing. Also I have ideal race carbon fiber intakes so I hear that turbo sound too. If the MC20 sounds that good I’m happy but I’m hoping for a even a little bit better sound. I may have to build a titanium exhaust for it.
I've seen a couple of vids on these that were just walk arounds in showrooms and I really liked the look of the car. This is the first video that gave specs and actually evaluated its driveability. I like it even more now.
I've seen the Giulia Quadrifoglio engine up close more than a few times and this looks and sounds VERY similar, minus the dry sump oil system of course. Honestly though, that engine sounded great and performed very well, so even if it shares a lot of parts with it, I wouldn't consider that a bad thing. As long as it's a good performer and isn't horribly unreliable, who cares.
@@noobasdfjkl The drivetrains are very durable but the electronics and software that run the show were terrible and buggy. I know because I did about 800 software updates on those cars meant to solve random issues. We had one customer that turned his into a track car and it had about 10k hard track miles on it with no mechanical issues. It's anecdotal, but still impressive. Also, it didn't help that the Giulia and Stelvio were both fast-tracked into production, as Ferrari was parting ways with Fiat and they needed their resources to make the car a good performer. If they hadn't rushed it to production, they could have been much better overall. I'd still rather have one over a current gen M3.
The only similarities are they are v6 turbo and pretty close in capacity. This is a completely new engine. The steering wheel however. Thats straight out of a giulia
Hey guys, seriously, how do you not get tickets? I'm jealous! Beautiful car, looks amazingly good without being so "in your face". Great video, thanks!
As far as looks are concerned, I give this car a 10. And I give 10's very seldom. The lines are so even and balanced. The color combos with the interior are perfect. IMO I wouldn't change a thing about it.
I saw one in person the other day and it created a crowd of people (not just men) admiring it and taking pictures. Haven’t seen a car create that much attention on a street in a while
This car looks amazing on film I can't wait to see one in person. Im worried that the $213k start price is a little steep but we will see. Great video!
This meant to be new Alfa 8C, but they change their mind. I have seen renders of this Alfa, and it was truly mind blowing. At least is not hybrid, like they planned before.
This was a very good video.I liked the way you solved the problem of some testers liking to keep you in the cabin with them.Potentially making things a little claustrophobic by having that little square in the corner, though we simultaneously had a view of the road and were able to enjoy the commentary. The views of the car from the outside driving around were the best.We could do with a lot more of them.Good to see you at speed.Perhaps a visit to the track would be good,to test the cars outer limits.
I have been blessed with one. So far, put 2000 miles on it and still want to drive it to discover more and understand it better. If I don't try to understand it, extreme performance is intuitive/natural and scary. But when I want to learn it it to control it, then (most times) I find myself behind the eight ball unless I concentrate intensely on the revs during shifting. But that is difficult at first to do (still learning) as torque and power develop exponentially when in the active secondary ignition chamber zone at higher 3500+ rpms. The unpredictability of it all is compounded by the fact that, in this zone, the power train suddenly becomes uncannily calm and smooth compared to the rest of the engine's 'grainy' nature ( compliments of no counter-balance shafts). This 'eye of the storm' phase betrays a corresponding spike in speed which can only clearly be confirmed by eyes glued to the speedometer: a sensation that is unpredictable by adopting either a naturally aspirated or modern turbo or hybrid predictive model (rev-reach power threshold- shift-repeat) or an old school turbo predictive model (rev-nobody home-sudden burst). With the MC20, the sensation can be explained by brief pause-sudden shove-exponentially growing shove only detectable by sudden suspension adaptation sounds and jitters when the road is not smooth enough. Mostly refined though rough around some edges, the car has an unusually high feel of solidity (feels like a tank), glides down the road when driven casually, tends to 'get a move on' and then surprises with more; and is, to me, stunningly beautiful and well proportioned. I truly believe, that if this car proves to be reliable enough in the long term, it's pleasing uniqueness will make history as one of the few Maserati brilliant stars.
I saw this same car a few weeks back. The blue one in So Cal. It made me spill my Starbucks. It made me do a 👀👀. Looks good on the road. Well done Maserati 👏.
Since the engine is basically a 6cyl SF90 motor it would be really cool if there was a MC20e that added the hybrid stuff from the SF90. This car would be mental with 750-800hp with electric assist.
It's actually quite a heavy car, not 3300lbs as Zack says, it's 3750 lbs despite all the CF! I don't know why the italins do that, like the Alfa Romeo Gulia Quadrifoglio, they claim 3300 lbs when it's actually 3750 lbs, despite having a CF driveshaft! Anyway, I love both of them cars, but I'd go with the Maserari if I could afford it.... :) PS: My W220 2005 S65 has got 2 sparkplugs/cylinder, that's a total of 24 plugs... really handy and cheap when it comes to changing them..... NOT!!! But then again, I'm not complaining when 1000Nm (738 pft) pushes me when doing a kickdown... :).
I'm guessing 3300 pounds dry. That weight makes the C8 Z06 look good despite the C8 Z06 weighing in at around 3434 pounds dry while still being supposedly under a 100k.
Beutiful car, genuinely pretty, not overly aggressive, and very amserati. The sound was my only hesitation but it seems good just different that what maserati use to sound like. My only question is regarding the build quality of the interior, seems to have alot of alfa derived parts, but atleast the infotainment system is great.
Really good review. IT really seemed to cover everything about this car. Not sure why but this seemed like one of the best overall reviews on a car you guys have done.
That white one with blue callipers, the blue pin stripe interior and all the black/grey (or carbon of specced) lower half of the car in the same blue as the callipers or the same blue as the MC12…. Oooosh I would have one of them big time. Would look the nuts! Shame the car doesn’t sound as good in Europe due to the OPF’s. Imagine it with the masser V8 sounds 🤤
The brakes do not feel as other carboceramics because they are by wire, so they are calibrated to feel as they do. Probably they didn't change the feel between normal and carboceramics or they didn't want to have that grabbiness that could put off a normal user
I had to go watch an old one take to verify my hunch and the MC20 sounds like the Ford GT. It’s more refined, less harsh and a bit more melodic, but the tones and frequencies seem to be the same. Sounds great.
The Nettuno engine uses the same 90 degree config and firing order of Maserati's V6 used in the Citreon SM, Maserati Merak, and that raced in Le Mans in the Ligier JS2 1972-74. Sounds like a modern version of this old engine.
Seems somewhat the separation of Fiat and Ferrari has enabled this car to exist. I couldn't see them making something like this when Ferrari was very much part of the same group. It's great to see them back, the new Maserati Bora, or should I say Merak...
Looking at this car, yes I'd take Masirati seriously. It appears to be a well put together car. We should wait before giving the engine props... We don't know the manufacturing or maintenance issues yet. If it can do what it does with Lexus LS400 reliability then yes props due. Good video guys💪
The ignition system is very similar to that of your standard aircraft reciprocating powerplant. On aircraft the cylinders are so large that they need two spark plugs to actually burn all the fuel in the cylinder 👍
i live in South Florida so I've already seen this, that color is either hideous on this model or this video doesnt do ANY justice cuz it's an absolute head turner in person. Never seen a Maserati that i'd think twice about lining up with lol
