Yes it’s going to be like the 70s because they know the ratings are shit, thats why they had to invent an “in season tournament” to try and boost ratings. The TV contracts are expiring in two years and they are not going to get what they are getting now.
the advanced nunbers actually show that as far as reg season basketball they do play defense its just that offenses are that much more sophisticated. It these all stars who arent playing defense really
That's me. Getting by on college ball and some H.S. games on RU-vid. And hating this American pro ball with a dull passion. They already won the goddamn genetic lottery. Except for Draymond. He's a mule. Have some humility. Hubris is coming.
The fact that people pay hundred/thousands of dollars to go watch these terrible all star games is beyond me lol.. I wouldn’t even watch it for free at home
Not just All Star game. Regular season games are pretty lackluster too. I miss the 80s and 90s where there was an emphasis on team play and defense. Think how exciting today’s game would be if these very athletic guys played basketball the way it was supposed to be played. Too many spoiled brats.
@@TheBBCSlurpeewhy even watch it for free?…. It’s beyond garbage at this point. I just rewatch old games from the 90s and 2000s, the great era of basketball.
To award the Kobe Bryant MVP trophy to anyone in today’s all star game style is an insult to the Black Mamba. They shouldn’t award it to anyone. No MVPs until they fix this mess.
Yeah....Lillard wins MVP for launching 25'-40' jumps shots and playing almost no defense. If he did pass, I didn't see it. Then again, it was at least better than Towns. 30 points in 4th quarter garbage time. No passing, just taking every shot. Seriously, I wouldn't play that way at the local gym. If we were getting beaten by 30 I'd at least pass to teammates so there were some positives out of the embarrassment.
Kobe deserves way better than this. I lost interest on the NBA the moment Kobe retired. All I hear is NBA players taking the easy rides in order to cement their legacy and being political. Oh and whining on social media.
What do expect when a guy like Brown is making the money he is making. Dude isn't even the best player on his team and has the richest contract in history.
Nobody told Stockton that he's a star when he was 13. Players today are being called superstars even as high school freshman, so they develop a diva sindrome during the rest of high school and college.
You are spot on. Heck I’ve watched YT videos of elementary aged kids trash talking and being disrespectful. Basketball was my favorite sport to play and watch but I can say I will never watch an NBA game again until the rules change back to where defense is prioritized.
I've been watching this really interesting kid Cooper Flagg the last couple years. He really looks like he's going to be an NBA superstar. But because of Social Media and coaches/agents trying to use him to their advantage, he's gotten royalty treatment for years. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a complete prima donna by the time he made the league. It's a shame. You see how hard he works on the game and the effort he puts in. But how is this going to ruin him for being a respectable pro instead of a complete narcissist?

The moments I remember. Isiah Thomas playing hard on a sprained ankle, Larry Bird laying on his stomach due to a bad back when he is not in the game, Magic Johnson refusing to leave a game due to an injury. Players like these don't exist anymore.
I get NFL players not wanting to play in the pro bowl because they actually hit, but hooping is not that dangerous. Sure it’s possible to get injured, but I’m sure try hard when they practice. Why can’t they at least bring that intensity. Disrespectful to the paying fans.
@@kylelaforest9919 Ya, the pro bowl is a really dumb idea.. you cant half ass football..but nba all star game should be easy to figure out.. play like they did in the 2000s all star games. like 30% defensive effort so players can show off some moves
Mark Jackson said about 8 - 10 years ago, that Steph Curry ruined the NBA, and he was so right!!! It has just become a three pointer game, I’ve seen players run to the three point line to take a 3, and pass on a layup! It’s ridiculous what the NBA has become. Mark Jackson was absolutely right!
Bruh I don’t even like playing pick up games at the gym anymore; I can’t even play my role as a shooter cuz the rest of my team is sitting on the 3 pt line👎🏾👎🏾 Edit: time for me to master the post game/midrange
I remember the first Shaquille O’Neal All-Star appearance, in which everybody was blocking his dunk attempts and making it hard on him to score. Playing defense should always be an integral part of the game. Nowadays, All-Star games feel like playing a video game with defense set to zero.
You wanna see complaints? Bump this 65 game rule up to 82. There's no reason a star player can't be out there, barring serious injury. They don't like it? Tough.
It makes sense for young players to be against the rule. They want the opportunity to earn All-Star appearances while slacking in the regular season just like the older stars have done. And the whole not playing hard thing just shows how little they care about the fans. They play hard in private games during the off-season when nobody's watching.
This is what "player empowerment" gets you. Instead of standing up to the players like David Stern did, Adam Silver is always on his knees. And why are the owners allowing it- because the NBA product is primarily marketed to the young demographic who are heavily influenced by social media and are generally accepting the ridiculous notion that these players are slaves on their owner's plantation..
@@LastSunrise1981 thats not much of an argument. Meanwhile, I have the reality of where the league is right now due to caving in to players under Silver.

These players who don't want to play the minimum 65 games are softer than soft. As said in the video, in the 1990's playing 82 games was a badge of honor that many players had. You want load management play less minutes in a back-to back. This pampering of players is ludicrous. The all-star game looked like a glorified shoot around.
7:55 -- Stockton was an extremely skilled point guard. He set great screens, have a good jumper, lifetime 83% FT, always made the right pass, rarely lost the ball, and was a good defender. As you most likely know, Gary Payton stated that he was the hardest guy to guard. He was one of the most skilled point guards to play the game.
Lame Dillard winning the MVP was fitting as he epitomizes what today’s NBA players have become. He puts up meaningless offensive stats while playing abysmal defense.
I gave up on the NBA years ago…once it became regular to see 120+ point game scoring I realized I was all set. There is absolutely no defense played. It’s like they want to see how high of a score they can get instead of actually playing ball.
Meanwhile Wilt played a season averaging 48.3 min a game for the entire 82 game season while scoring around 50, grabbing 20 plus rebounds, banging 20k women and eating meals that make competitive eaters cringe. Yeah today we have far superior athletes. No wonder people are tuning out of the games.

I am from Europe and I was until late night to watch the All stars. I cannot understand why the NBA allows this to happen, I mean this should be a showcase for the rest of the world to see the best players of the league, best defenders against best scorers... and they decide to play with no professionalism, no intensity, insulting the fans who paid money to watch them etc. I'm not saying that they should play as a "playoff game" but this is unacceptable. If I was in charge of the NBA they would have been fined for insulting fans, it may sound crazy but if you don't make some changes this is going to be the trend for the upcoming years.
@Artificial. Same 💯💯 Where's the professionalism first and foremost!! But I don't mind because they have a meltdown when Team USA loses again but they don't see the correlation..! 🤷🤦
Scottie Barnes was the only one trying on defense. He was even setting picks and stuff😂. Of course I'm a Raptors fan, and love Scottie, but I wish mor people saw the same thing.
Idk how you can fine them for not playing defense. If you can do that for all star u should be able to do it any game..that’s not up to the nba it’s up to players and coaches..
I love the images you selected from the classic all stars. I ve seen live many of those and every all star for us kids was soooo highly anticipated and expected (i'm a former basketball player myself), and we used to talk for days after the all star ended about the plays. I remember the best all star in history i think 2001 when they played double OT and stephon marbury scored a couple of insane threes but the defense was so tight and you could almost feel the tension and pride between East and West. Best players in the league, the competitiveness, the ambition to win and also to defend. The level was insane. It used to be that the last 2 quarters were the most intense and really serious. They played to win and it was a thing to prove that east is better than west or vice versa. They never backed down. I remember it was a morale thing in the middle of the season, the all star winner usually decided which coast would win the championship also. I stopped watching all stars in the last 13 years. I dont find them exciting or entertaining anymore.
You hit the nail on the head. European players are (generally) hungrier cuz it's still a hard or at least less predictable journey to the NBA. With how out of control the scouting & hype machine are in the US, AAU circuits etc, you have young guys getting too much too soon and i think it tempers their hunger. Look at Zion, such a shame, a star pre-NBA, had very little financial or fame motivation to continue to grind, then you have a Giannis who literally plays like his life depends on it. Not saying this is true of all US players obviously, but I def. think it's a thing
NBA placates to the WNBA, its like a real life relationship one tries to uplift the other while the other like an anchor brings the other one down to its level.
I stopped watching after the first quarter. It was so boring. These guys don't try. The NBA product sucks. Until Adam Silver is gone, the NBA will continue to suck. They don't have a face for the NBA.

As someone who has fallen off on the NBA the last couple years, this years All Star game might have cured me of this sport forever. If they dont give a shit why am I gonna spend an entire portion of every year watching a glorified money grab? Over the years the up and down defense has vanished, the center third of the court could just be removed, absolutely nobody plays there outside of the last 60 seconds of the game. Then you bring in the NBAs never-ending ref problems, etc etc...incredibly aggravating league.
@@mphase7575 I mean all sports are moving in the direction of favoring offense over defense. You think their marketing teams don't know what the audience wants to see?
EXACTLY 💯 🏀🥱💤👎👎!... The regular season is hard enough to watch but the lack of defense and competitiveness was disgraceful in the 2024 Allstar game 🤦♂️.
The thing is that watching games from the golden era (late80's, early 90's) you see a level of competitiveness and rivalry that you don't see now. They all pretend to be friends and the NBA, with its push to 'sanitize' the game by essentially making physical play a no-no, has all but ensured that there is little defense. Couple that with the league all but incentivizing high scoring with their silly pledges if a certain high score is met and such of recent. Similarly the league has all but dissuaded players from being original in the dunk contest between judges who score too high the same old regular dunks that are done over and over each year and low score anything remotely new, and the league itself encouraging the old dunks (remember when they had added the "recreate a 'classic' dunk" component to the event?). And that is not even mentioning that nowadays the players aren't invited/confirmed until days before the event thus having no time to come up with anything good, not to mention that the prima donnas that are the modern "stars" are too chicken to lose a solo event. Between the generally softer defense on regular games, the over-use of three pointers (and three point shooters being more protected by the league), and the truly terrible officiating over the last decade (seems you nowadays need to take 6+ steps to be called for a travel), regular games are what all star games used to be and the All Star Game itself has lost anything that makes it unique and special.
Combination of popularity and his stats are still good. Realistically Kobe shouldn't have started in the 2014, 2015 and 2016 All-Star games and it happened.
@@354allday So far his 17.9 shots per game is his third lowest average in his career only trailing 2013 and 2014. He is 17th in fga per game. That isn't that high.
The worst dunk contest ever to me was the one in Philly that had the players spin a big wheel and copy the dunks on it. As far as the 58 game thing goes, if I miss work 30% of my scheduled days, I’ll get fired.
Ppl forget they got rid of the dunk contest in the late 90s. Vince Carter is the reason they brought it back cuz of his in game dunks during his rookie season
Star players not wanting to be "embarrassed" on TV is one of the biggest culprits as to why players don't try as hard on defense. It shouldn't be that embarrassing to get shook off the dribble or dunked on by other NBA players.
From second grade on up it is shoot threes. No lay up practice , no foul shooting practice. No defense except reaching and fouling. The fans are on their phones until someone hits a three. Then they go berserk. Forgetting the previous 15 misses , 10 which were airballs. Garbage
Truth is, times have changed rapidly and fans have changed. Just like this new crop of players, there’s a new crop of fans that love this style of play and don’t know any better. It’s sad to say but after 30+ yrs of watching the NBA, I think it’s time to move on for me.
The All-Star game is the culmination of what the NBA is…no defense and bs until the playoffs. I’d venture a guess that in todays game not 1 player plays an entire season as well. Unfortunately, I think I was spoiled to have been watching live the 80’s and 90’s. The real NBA era. Personally, I can’t watch the NBA anymore I think it’s trash. 😢
Let’s not forget Stockton was playing in crappy converse with awful health conditions.Technology has changed drastic. LeBum/LePED would never last back then.
Even AI says Lebron would have been dominant back in the 90s. I strongly disagree, since most sports' science findings weren't implemented back then, so he'd have been a regular guy getting injured like everyone else. Also, PEDs have helped him excel performing, so he's not a unique player, he's a product of science, protected by the league
Love the potshots at LeBron in videos that barely mention him. If LeBron was in the 90s he still would have been good. Probably not as good but I think 2013 era LeBron would be great anytime.

Compounded by the fact that players who are really good in college, but will barely make a dent on an NBA roster, can take NIL money and stay in college as long as humanly possible

@@Pete391 That is still a recent phenomenon. The NBA as a brand is still riding on it's image from 10-20 years ago. That's usually how it goes. Fans like me or even you - I don't know how old you are - grew up watching the late 90s/00s ball and still follow our teams for the most part, though maybe not as much anymore. It's a latent effect, in a few more years we will see what this current style has really done to the league's image.
I dont think there's ever been a generation of athletes that have been more entitled or don't care about fans opinions than this current one. They are out of touch with reality when it comes to pay and having to work. As much as I love sports I dont agree with what they get paid especially if this is the result they are giving us.
If I started a new league to compete with the NBA, the first thing I would do is eliminate the three point line and the second thing would be to allow hand checking. I would lengthen the clock to 30 seconds. I want the bulk of the action in the lane.

This is the reason 70-point games are not impressive anymore. These guys play slightly more defense during regular season games, than during the all-star game.
To be fair, the Hawks tried against Luka. He literally just shot that well. But he didn't have to face the kind of defense he would have seen in the 80s & 90s. They would have taken it personally and he would have gotten dumped on his head if they couldn't stop him straight up.
I watched the that Luka game as well ... If you consider Hawks players have really tried then imagine how bad it is in the other games the defenders don't even try. Good defenders make shooters uncomfortable .... A rare feat in modern NBA games
@@KR-ln5qw He'd score a lot on Wade. Kobe bothered everybody, but so far Luka is the most double-teamed player in the league and he's also the highest scorer (and averages almost a triple double) so I supposed just like people who gave Kobe trouble, Luka would be just fine, but have to work harder for his points and assists.
Back then. During Vince Carters dunk contest, you had Ray Allen and Jerry Stackhouse in the contest. Nobody even remember Jerry Stackhouse dunk cause the crowd was still in Awe of Vince Carters Previous dunk contest
The problem is incentive. If you want the All-Star game to be good, the players have to want to win. $100,000 is nothing to these players with their NBA contracts and endorsement deals. The a erage All-Star makes $7.5 million in salary alone, not including bonuses. So raise the payout or find something else that will actually motivate the players to try. As for the slam dunk contest... Meh. There are only so many original non-gimmick dunks you can do. It's time to just end it.

@@thuggoewhat do you mean by skipping college? Everyone has had to play at least 1 season in college for quite a while now, or at least be 1 yr out of high school
It's almost like we passed some line in where individual talent overtook an offensive "system". Since the invention of the game, guys weren't so athletic and skilled that they could just get buckets on their own whenever they wanted. They had to rely on their teammates and the offensive system to get open looks and good shots. Now, aided by recent rule changes, guys are able to do what they want individually such that most offenses consist of giving the ball to their star player and everyone else getting out of the way. At best we might get a high pick and roll situation. It seems the overall game has suffered has the individual skill level of players increased. Also, not making excuses, but players today have put a lot more miles on their bodies by time they get to the NBA compared to the past. These guys are playing constantly from the time they were in middle school, if not earlier. I do still agree, however, that guys used to be a lot tougher.
I didn't see the horrendous spectacle, because I knew what was coming, but as a basketball fan I saw the resumes and... what to say. It was a stinky shit. The dunk contest sucked except for three dunks and two of them were puntuated badly. The three point contest was average being polite. Even if the organization try to cheat us because now the players score more points as if we basketball fans were stupid and didn't realize that now they have one full rack of double basketballs and two extra three points, when in reality they score LESS SHOTS. And the all star game... hurst me the most. Instead of watching the best players in the league competing with each other we see a glorified and long shootout round. I'm not saying the ASG were the epitome of intensity. They were "showtime" here and there, but they didn't let pass all players all time. They had a little of pride to jump to an easy dunk or try to defend one on one to a flashy handle. The sad part is that has Kobe's name in the trophy that has the two most competitive ASG I've watched live. One in 2001 with the epic duel at the end with Starbury, when the East were down 21 and Alle Iverson went MVP mode and 2003 when they went to two overtimes to overcome the East and the epic buzzer beater that MJ put on Marion. The only entertaining thing was the Sabrina/Curry duel.

The Rising Stars challenge on Friday was good(ish). To see McClung and the G-League team beat a solid lineup of NBA players was pretty cool to watch. I guarantee Wemby wasn't amused.....
I like how Luka and Jokic made a mockery of the game by clearly not giving a single eff. You can tell they really hate the non-competitive environment.
@hakeemolajuwon4352 You can't really be the only one or two out there trying. Luka said after the game that he was following the lead of the other players and commented on the lack of defense in the game. He also said "I don't know what we can do to fix it." So he's saying he'd prefer an actual competition, but how can we expect a (White) 24yo to try to dictate to other Hall of Famers how they should conduct their business in an exhibition game? I gotta imagine this is something the perennial All Stars have talked about amongst themselves, and they've collectively decided not to really compete. This is the job of the commissioner, the AS game coaches, and the most veteran All Star players to get everyone on board with competing. Those who don't want to compete at a reasonable level in an exhibition game, then they should only play a few minutes, and the guys who are cool with competing will play most of the minutes.
The 2 man weave down the court was a really great moment. On top of that, Joker's no-look pass at the end was epic! Halliburton had expressed interests in trying to show off what a great passer he was and put up a huge number, but was talked into scoring a lot instead and going for the MVP trophy. He had a solid game, but I would have much rather watched him set up other players to show off how good he really is. Luka may have been messing around, but he put up respectable assist & rebound numbers considering how little of the game he played in.

The only way to fix the issue with how many games basketball players play is to pay them per game salary so if they get 82 million per year that is 1 million per game. The top 4 paid players are tier 1, the next four are tier 2, and last 4 are tier 3. Those in tier 3 get their salaries whether they play or not since they are the bench warmer. Tier 2 players get 40% of their per game salary if they don't play and must play at least 15 minutes out of 48 minutes to get their full per game salary, tier 1 which are the best and most likely the one fans go to see get 30% of their per game salary if they decide not to play. Any plater hurt insurance pays 60% of their per game salary. Tier 1 players will only get their full salary if they play more than 20 minutes of out 48 minutes. This way a starter doesn't come in for 1 minute and then decides to come out for the rest of the game. If you come out the first quarter because you are hurt but not going out because of injury then you have the option to get paid the percentage base on your tier or make number the time during the next game.

A player will still get 3pts for his all time records, just each individual game the team is limited to 21pts of made 3's unless the incentives are met.
Excellent video man. It’s got to the point where I honestly might not watch the All-Star game next year, which is INSANE for me to say, because I’ve seen nearly every one since I was born. Seriously, why should we as the fans give a darn about this game, when the actual players show that they don’t??
The body goes where the head leads. When the best was Larry and Magic, the league thrived. When the best was Jordan, the league followed him and thrived. Same with Kobe. When the best was Lebron.....
great take, I suspect that the superteam era is also a contributing factor. Sure Jordan and Pippen probably both started in an All-Star game back in the 90s, maybe Payton and Kemp, Stockton and Malone, Shaq and Penny and I wouldn't be surprised if Kareem, Magic, Baylor at some point were all all-star starters. But more recently, how can someone get excited about seeing All-Stars play together if they all play together on the Celtics, the Heat, the Cavs, the Lakers anyway? It probably once was an avenue for players to make the case of what they could do if their franchise was willing to acquire ONE additional all-star like a Gasol or a Sprewell. But now I think Angry Old Hoops fan calculated that Lebron has basically been playing on slightly diluted US Olympic Mens basketball teams for over a decade. He's had 25+ Olympic teammates, even more once you count players for other countries national teams (although, if you play in the NBA and you aren't US born, you will probably be on your country's Olympic team) I suspect it just isn't exciting to fans to see their favorite players on the same team together, when that is happening all the time now with disappointing results.
I agree, the Allstar weekend was the absolute worst. It was painful to watch. What happened to the best competing against the best?!?! The highlight was the Steph Curry 3 point shooting contest.
Exactly then people always say “ yea well this or that team lost because their star player isn’t healthy”. Like WTF is even HEALTHY at this point. Players will literally sit out a game because they hit their big toe on a bed frame and fans go “well they aren’t healthy”. Like bruh
At this point I say, replace the all star weekend, in season tournament and pre season with an international tournament. Make the all star events open to players in other leagues around the world to pressure players to participate and try so that they are not shown up by players from less competitive leagues. The best 2 events by far at the all star weekend this year were Steph vs Sabrina and the rising stars competition. They need to find new ways to make bragging rights competitions and highlights different players. Maybe a 6th man and most improved player competition which factors into those awards at the end of the year some how.
I think this has a lot to do with the Lebron era honestly. The face of the league doesn't have a competitive bone in his body and bounces around from team to team looking for greener pastures. I believe the culture gets better when he retires. I can tell that guys like Giannis want to compete.
Steph is a better face of the league, look at how he acts. Sadly the NBA seems to hate him since he didn't sign with NIKE and chose Under Armour instead
I respect your opinion. My two cents is the culture won't get better when he retires. Also the NBA proclaimed that Lebron would be the next great when he was in high school they made him the face of the league. Most players will want to play with their friends or go join a team to chase Championships. Giannis to your point is probably one of the few guys who really want to compete. I may be wrong but didn't Dame say he was happy in Portland and didn't want to go chasing championships?
I don't even know what happened to have the Bucks pick him up this year. Well, I think it's because Giannis kind of made a big statement saying the Bucks need to actively pursue championships or else...which is big for him to say since he had called Millwaukee his home 10 years and believes in loyalty. I think it is just him making a point that he wants to stay with the Bucks but they need to get better with some things. That still isn't resolved because Dame hasn't been playing well since he came to them and their new coach is asking why they would hire him for the job. Lol@@MC-so6bz
NBA needs to change two things I think. 1) Blocks should be 1 point deductions 2) No back to back 3 point in the first three qaurters. Allow outside arch jumpers but it will only be worth 2 points on follow up attempts. A 3-2-3 structure will fix basketball
The best way to fix the All-Star game is to only select the players from the top 10 teams from each conference. Those are the playoff and play in teams then the winner of the All-Star game which ever conference wins, will have Homecourt advantage in the NBA finals.
