When I heard the news of Dickey Betts' passing yesterday, I was physically sick at my stomach. Another huge part of my youth is gone. I grew up on the Allman Brothers Band and followed Dickey's career extensively. The song "Jessica" is why I named my youngest daughter by that name. Words can't describe how much he'll be missed by so many of us. Thank you for the years of some of the greatest music ever written, Dickey. I know Duane, Gregg, Butch, and Barry met you with arms wide open.
Sad to hear that he’s gone. These guys and the Grateful Dead shaped who I became in early life up to now, 68 years young and retired to the hot rod building life
After 70 trips around the Sun this is still the best shit ever! I'm glad to hear the next Generation is carrying on the traditional way to play the Blues.
I have a Sunburst 1958 Gibson Les Paul Custom Shop Replica guitar. I’ve decided to refinish the top to honor the Gold Top Les Pauls that both Duane and Dickey played.
Only good people listen to the Allman Brothers! This song is summer to me, hangin with lifelong friends, my wife and my kids sittin around a camp fire, swatting a few mosquitoes and drinking a few beers! Not a care in the world!
Dickey Betts was an exceptional guitar player, singer and a cool guy!! So sad to hear he passed away, coming back to listen to him sing and play guitar, one of the best guitar players of all time! Love Dickey and Allman Bros band!! Enjoy your Blue Skies forever in Heaven with Gregg, Duane, Butch, Barry and all the amazing Southern rockers that have passed away before us!! GOD Speed Dickey!!! 🙏🎶💯❤️
This is even cooler when you find out the show was dedicated to Jerry Garcia Bc it was the day he passed and they opened with the Franklins Tower riff to pay homage to him.
Was it the anniversary of the day he passed? Pearson and Burbridge didn't join the band until, I think, 98/99, so it couldn't have been the actual day. I saw a couple of the Beacon gigs in 96 and they did that, too. They also jammed on St Stephen in Whipping Post at those shows. RIP Dickey!
Rest in peace Dicky. Hope you’re with Greg Duane and butchie smoking a joint and playing for god in heaven. Love you man. Big part of my life growing up. Play on my friend. ❤️
Dude lived in the enormous shadow of Duane Allman. He did a masterful job of perfecting his amazing guitar and songwriting gifts. What a gift and a treasure.
Duane and Dickey did it together each bring their own wonderful playing to come together in bringing us some of the most beautiful music ever made neither lessor than the other.
"You're my blue sky, you're my sunny day". Thank you for all your years of soulful southern rock and jamming with ABB that moved us all to tears. May you have nothing but blue skies from now on. So much love.
Best southern rock band ever. My favorite show was in 1979 in Wisconsin. It was Dickie birthday and he did a 25 minute solo and he got pied in the face. Lord to me back home.
I totally agree with you, man!!!!! slide shows, smoke and fire. the only reason people come to see an act be cause of the most outrageous costumes. can you imagine?! how low these today's milk babies have sunk!!!
I was 15 when first heard the Allman Brothers, I had all their records down through the years. I grew up in the deep south Mobile AL. and the music carried me through my youth & until today. RIP Dickey you were the best!
I was 13 in 1973. Talk about relating to something as big as the Allman's. Originally from Connecticut Married in the courthouse in Mobile Alabama May 15, 2000. Live in Vegas now. Started drum lessons in December after 53 years hiatus. Small world but fortunate. 🙏
I saw ABB twice in the old days ..they filled a place in America..I will never forget. My generation. How I loved them days.Alot of my friends are gone now...Pusher man got alot. But ABB were apart of that scene.I was lucky go go see them.6.50 7.50 8.50 tickets. Thanks
I saw the original group 6 times in 3 different states. Duane had tremendous talent but don't ever thank that Dickie couldn't stand his groung also. And they worked so well together. I'm 71 and have seen many bands play, Dickie and Duane could flat wear you out. They knew what lick each other was going to play before they hit it. Just incredible guitarist, seperate or together!❤❤❤❤😊
Adding Morning Dew chords to the intro to pay homage to Jerry Garcia's passing away that day. At first I heard the guitar picking and thought I was hearing things. ABB is a class act! Glad I grew up when music was awesome!
Actually the opening riff Dickey adds to Blue Sky here is the central musical motif to a different Grateful Dead song: Franklin’s Tower, written by Robert Hunter, Bill Kreutzman and Bob Weir. However that song does mention the dew in its oft-repeated chorus so you’re not completely off base.
Dickey Betts pickin on that red guitar as Charlie Daniels said in "South's Gonna Do It Again" Dickey was like no other. That's what made him so special. RIP Dickey.
My last text to my dad. " You're my blue sky, you're my sunny day. Lord, you know it makes me high when you turn your love my way." He responded "Amen, son." I never spoke to him again. This song existed for us. Couldn't do it without Allman Brothers Band.
I don't know if Dickey is one of the greatest guitarists ever, but he's my favorite. And this is my favorite Allman Brothers tune. The guitar solos and harmonies in this song are awesome. I go into another world when I listen to it.
The Allman Brothers have always been about the music no costumes, idiot side show dancers, etc. just great music with the best musicians no theatrical bullshit. I’m thankful to have seen them live and growing up in the south only made it better thanks ABB
Read up on the time Zakk Wylde - a great guitarist in his own right - sat in w/ the Allman Brothers. Its hard to imagine Zakk being a disappointment, but he was playing w/ this band.
After the 1st of many times seein Dicky shred that guitar,i soon realized his playin was comin straight outta of his soul and heart right through his giutar, only one other guitar player ever did that to me his name is Jerry Garcia. Rip in Peace Mr. Forrest Richard Betts and my best to all your friends and family Love and Peace in the House
I remember seeing Dickey with his own band in October 1974 with his band. He was incredible and the only guitarist. He had a steel slide guitar accompany him. Of course he played Elizabeth Reed. Pure gold.
i had my teenage years in Liverpool uk and quite often on an early summer saturday morning would play this track among others before heading into the city...love the allmans and 'blue sky' is always the one that takes me back to those teenage summers
Blessed to have seen him play several times. My summer ritual is going to see the Allman Bros jam at our local Amphitheater or a road trip. Living here in Charlotte was much easier catching a show in the Carolinas or Georgia. RIP Dicky Betts
Can we also get some love for Jack Pearson here? Such a creative guitar player. Saw him play with Gov't Mule in 2015 and had no idea who he was. Blew my mind though.
They never collaborated with the dead. In fact Gregory couldn't stand them. And I'd argue if you like good music you'd agree. It was more them playing at same venues and DB just loving a good intro to Blue Sky
@@davidbeil1642 Duane was part of a few jams w the GD. So was Gregg, for that matter I read his book and yes Gregg wasn't a fan of the Dead, but frankly? That was his opinion, not the band's. But it's easier to be musically sharpened up if you're only gigging 15 songs, while the GD had over 100 songs in play at any given time and just a vague notion what they were going to be playing and in what order on any given night. There's a difference in approach there that makes it tough to score the bands the same way. Both approaches bring great rewards.
Blue skies is arguably one 1⃣ of the favorite Allman Brothers songs of all time , and it gave Dickie Betts a chance to really show off his guitar playing talents as much as any song that he was more or less the lead guitar player 😊😅😮😢😂❤😂😂😊❤😊❤😊
no date listed, so maybe it was '95, affiliated artists were working a Jerry tribute into their shows. Oteil on bass, little did he know he'd be playing it again 20 years later.
Dickey Betts could be to me the most underrated guitarist in Rock history. There's no way in hell is that the Allman Brothers could have continued after the death of Dwayne without dickey Betts. His talent was enormous. So soulful. A truly great guitarist add talented songwriter and overall musician. Rest in peace dicky. You earned it.
Got to see Dickey and Warren Haynes duel it out on this song. Just at sunset at an outdoor concert. Unforgettable. My favorite A Bros song ever, and that's saying something.
Dickey one of the most lyrical players ever. Nothing to prove, just melody & phrasing. Even w the Strat instead of the usual Les Paul, his style is right there, undeniably him. It’s all in the touch. Legend.
Dickey Betts playin that Allman Brothers style music, those riffs totally awesome! I first saw Dickey when ABB came to town in Decatur, Alabama at Calhoun Community College back in 1971!! I have been to many many rock concerts including 2 Led Zeppelin concerts, Joe Walsh and the James Gang, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Mountain, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Kansas, the Outlaws, and Eric Clapton on March 26, 1978, however, the Allman Brothers Band is the BEST OF THE BEST rock 'n blues music I ever heard. 😎✌🎸🎸🎸🎹🥁🥁🎤🎤🎤🎤🎶🎵 and their sound all started with DUANE ALLMAN, GREG ALLMAN, DICKEY BETTS, JAIMOE, BERRY OAKLEY, BUTCH TRUCKS and their music is still being played on RU-vid...
Probably the best road cruising music ever. Brings back so many memories of hauling ass down this great nation's roads back in the 70's and 80's. Jamming thru Kansas on a cool Sunday morning heading west...
the only thing this brings to my mind is a nice warm summer day driving on a back road with my windows down and the wind in my hair not a care in the world. except being happy. and loving good music.
Your damn right there Mike, and i thought Rory Gallagher could play a mean guitar until i saw Dickey Betts, and that Jack Pearson is shit hot as well but i wonder when he is going to give back the lead singer of Dexys midnight runners his dungarees.
