Absolutely agree with both of your statements Pete!! I was introduced to Allman Brothers as a 10 year old in 1973 by my older brother in Durban, South Africa - who was 10 years older than me . Certainly Marshall Tucker Band and The Blues Project are also great bands but if I was stuck on a desert island with one record/tape/cd, etc., it would have to be Allman Brothers!!

Dalton, there has never been a band that literally taught this as The Allman Brothers have, and until VERY recently have continued to, and as u wrote , the guitar players, wow, that's all that can be said, nobody can ever criticize the quality of the artists who have played for the band, every one of them have shown their extreme talent both with the band and on their own with industry leading, public adoring bands many of which are today leaders of the genre, always and forever- A.B.B. !

In my personal opinion, Haynes and Trucks was the best lineup since the original Dickey and Duane. Without those two at the forefront of this band, I don't believe they would have seen the continued success and popularity that they did in the modern era. Not trying to knock the other various lineups featuring Dickey and other guys, but I don't personally see them being as successful all the way into 2014 as they were with Haynes and the absolute mastery of Trucks. Just my two cents.

Living within 1 hour of THREE different venues this band loved to play between the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s, I had the pleasure of seeing virtually every version of The Allman Brothers Band (after Dwayne passed). Every version was mind blowingly fantastic. Even when Greg wasn’t well enough to tour, the band played as BHLT (Betts, Hall, Lavelle & Trucks) to keep the band together and keep everything going!

I was blessed to see the original lineup my first semester at college…..New Mexico State University! October 6, 1971. Some buddies and I were picked out by our RA to unload the trucks and hump their gear to the stage for the roadies to set up. We got to hang around for the sound check, got into the concert for free and watch from stage left. They played the next night in San Diego, then went back to Macon, where Duane lost his life 13 days later. So I was also blessed to see his next to last performance before we lost him.

@@dalezjc >What happened to real music? >Thank God I grew up in the 60s and heard all this great music the first time around. The problem is not that we're defensive; It's that you're demeaning. Profoundly, ridiculously demeaning. Rock in particular has this problem, where old bands, instead of stepping out of the limelight, or maybe playing a few gigs here and there, clog up the festival main stages for DECADES after their prime. You old farts are killing the music you claim to love. Why should any young person get into rock music when it's "What happened to real music? When I was your age we had Foghat (or whoever)?" Why should any young person even bother to pick up a guitar when stupid old people will just keep bitching about how "You're not as good as the bands in the 70's." Even when bands are inspired by old bands, they're just revanchists, never as good as the original. The only reason the music of your youth exists is because the previous generation of old guys in suits went "I don't know what this is but the kids seem to dig it, " so why doesn't your generation do the same? Nah man. The Allman Brothers is great. ZZ Top is great. Zeppelin is great. But people like you who are stuck in the past and shit on the present suck.
@dalezjc
@dalezjc 2 года назад
@@GPaulTheThrashKing Thanks for your response. You're still being defensive, but that's okay. My father was an amateur jazz musician, and I grew up hearing tons of jazz. I hated it at the time, but little did I know that it was affecting me in a very positive way. But I never ragged on my Dad (or people his age) for loving music from their generation. I just didn't seek it out, so there was never any animosity against it. Why does it bother you so much that bands from the 60s/70s are still touring? To be frank, most of these bands have lost their mojo, and the majority of the lead singers can't sing any longer (compared to their earlier days). But boomers love them, so why not tour? Note that music subjective for sure. Whether I think I grew up in the greatest generation for music, is irrelevant for younger people. And I don't care. I heard Buddy Holly, Elvis, and The Beatles as a first-generation fan, and that music was brand new at the time. Nothing like it had ever been heard. Everything since then has been derivative of that music. And factor in blues greats like Albert King, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Freddie King, and BB King, and you have another genre that influenced tons of rock artists. That's important to the history of rock. You don't have to like it, but it is what it is. And doo-wop music is just as important. I don't care for most of it, but it's important. Sorry for rambling.

Wow , this performance is fantastic . A great American band , in all its forms . Every band member since 1969 is, or was, a virtuoso musician . Sadly we have lost many of them . Part of American history that will never be repeated .

Some of the finest ensemble playing ever performed. This was always meant to be a live band - and no matter how good it sounds through speakers or headphones, there will never be any way to hear it the way it was played: when you look at the sheer volume of drums and rhythm section instruments arrayed across the back of that stage, it becomes inconceivable to imagine how they all sound when played by master players, live, unless you were there. In unison, these instruments became like a breathing, living, beating, organic being. No recording, no matter how well done, could possibly fit all of the endless dynamics of a band like this, on any medium - and this is only getting as far as the drums. A live gig by this band was the closest thing to musical perfection I have ever heard - and I am 70 years old. There will always be great bands - but this one was something very, very special. Many people think that Duane Allman was unknown prior to this band's rise: not so. Like many of our greatest players from that era, he was already very well known as a session musician, who had played for performers like Boz Scaggs, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and others, a good while prior to the formation of The Allman Brothers Band. His style lives on, through players like you hear on this recording, but he died far, far too soon.

...worked their show in 1973, on stage crew as a young teen. Greg Allman's keyboard bench and mic boom stand were left behind for an unknown reason....they wound up in my basement to be used in my local group..... long gone now. I witnessed the greatness of Greg from only a few feet behind him, just out of the spotlight. " Brothers and Sisters" had just come out with " Jessica " being the big hit, along with Dickie singing " Ramblin Man ". What a memory and thrill ! Their stage manager was named " Twigs" and I kept forgetting it, accidentally calling him " Sticks" a couple of times until he threatened to " kick my Yankee ASS !! " That went over BIG with my co- workers !! Lucky me, I had seen them live in Boston Common while Duane and Berry Oakley were alive when I was 15. The Allman Bros. Band was great right out of the box : Elizabeth Reed, Midnight Rider, Whipping Post all GIANT songs with their unique sound......unforgettable !!

I've watched several bands in my life but none gives the live experience that the ABB did (oddly, the only other band I can relate it to is Tool. Completely on another level). Radio doesn't do them justice. Watching all that come together is complete magic. It's been 23 years since I seen them in that very place, The Fox, and it will never be forgotten.

It still gives me chills hearing Oteil laying down the bass line at the beginning before being joined by the rest of the band. Watching this fills me with joy and at the same time infinite sadness thinking these gentlemen will never all play together again.

I stay away from the ABB for time periods and travel around the musical universe listening. Saw this pop up and thought “Shoot, Ive heard this song so many times, but what the heck..” Then they remind me why they were the greatest rock band in the USA. I dont even call it rock, its just a high. Its High Music. Derek just smoked that initial solo. He really did summon Duane so much. Not just in style but the way he motivates the rhythm section to lock in and rev up. Holy crap this was an amazing performance. Never tire of the ABB. I may not listen weekly, but about 4 or five times a year the Allman Brothers Band will always be dominating my musical roots and elevate my heart and mind to remember the hope in music. Amazing. So so glad they caught this on film.
