I think there are actually 5 in the running: Allmans at the Fillmore, Skynyrd's One More from the Road, The Who's Live at Leeds, Derek and the Dominoes In Concert, and CSNY's Four WAY Street.
The Fillmore East was in New York, the Fillmore West was in Frisco. The Allman Brothers were a blues band who sometimes played up tempo songs that blended rock into them, thus inventing what became "southern rock".
At 71, I got to enjoy them for 5 de ades, true pioneers with their own sound. It's way cool to see younger cats discovering the ABB and finding a great era for us old schoolers.
The second guitarist is Dicky Betts. He is legendary in Southern Rock. He and Duane (Skydog) were the standard for every 2 guitar rock band that followed.
Dicky Betts, to my mind, really provided the "it" factor. He provided some great guitar licks. He really stirred the creative juices for both brothers I believe.
The key to listening to Fillmore East, if you want to know who is who in the recording: Dickey is in the right channel, Duane is the left. Kind of like the way they lined up on stage. Likewise, Butch is in the right channel, Jaimoe the left. Skydog Lives.
@@HRConsultant_Jeff I love Dickey Betts, he had a different sound being a banjo player before a guitarist. More happy majors lol. He didn't get the credit Duane was getting and there is nothing to take away from him, he was that damn good. But to those who say Dickey was just rhythm? play them "Southbound" there are other great leads he has done, that one hits you in the face though. it makes me smile.
Oh...I forgot, "Skydog"! So glad you mentioned it. Brings back memories of good stuff, wine and Eating' A Peach! Dicky Betts sometimes get lost in the legend...he was the touchstone that kept the magic going...no one like the AB... Peace JC✌
Fillmore East was in NYC; Fillmore West was in San Francisco. And just remember for the future, this is the last time that you will see Duane live because he died about a month or 2 after this concert, in fact the live double album from this concert which put the Allman Brothers on the map, came out after Duane Allman tragically died in a motorcycle accident. The next album Eat a Peach went through the roof, and it was a double album tribute to Duane. Duane was on just 3 songs on what was supposed to be a single album. But they put on the 3 songs Duane played on the same side and added two more cuts from their Fillmore concert, this song and Trouble No More which highlighted Duane's amazing slide guitar. This became Side 3. Side 1 had 3 great new songs, recorded after Duane's death, two by Gregg Allman and one by Dickey Betts, who now was also the only lead guitarist left. Side 2 and 4 are the Mountain Jam, a 45-minute jam that saw the original incarnation of the band, with Duane and Dickey trading licks all the way, one last time.
Sad commentary. But they were Surely the Best . I wish I'd got off my behind years earlier and listened to them. Better late than never has never been truer to me.
@@BigCarmine The Fillmore East archives shows that Johnny Winter and Elvin Bishop were also on the bill for the March 11-13 shows. However, Wikipedia indicates the 3/12 & 3/13 shows were recorded. Additionally, there were also two performances per night. On one of the numerous releases of the album, Elvin Bishop sings Drunken Hearted Boy to close the final show that ended 6:00 AM. It's hard to piece together all the information, but regardless, there's no doubt in my my mind that At the Fillmore East is the finest live album ever released that inevitably propelled the Allman Brothers Band to their rightful place in rock history. It's truly unfortunate that Duane would die 7 months later riding his harley, and then Berry also dying in another tragic motorcycle wreck a year later after Duane. I just can't imagine the music that would have been created by the ABB, had they lived longer...
@@ronfriedman8740 Thank you. I was not sure what year this was and I was curios as to weather "Nick Danger and the Heat" had been the opener for this concert. Thanks again.
correction: the infamous fillmore concert was recorded march 12th and 13th 0f 71' duane died oct.29th 71' the allman bros. were the last act to ever take the stage at the fillmore in june 71'! HE APPEARED LIVE NUMEROUS TIMES AFTER THAT!!!! get your facts straight there ace!
My uncle Chank was Greg best friend up to the day he died and I had the pleasure to go to his last show here in Macon. Chank Middleton passed recently but saw Greg as a real brother! He may have been a white southerner but Greg and Duane had soul music infused with bluegrass. Irony of it was Chank was a huge Bob Marley fan lol #longlivetheAllmanbrothers
Like the other reply you got, I read about Chank in an ABB book...I can only imagine the stories you heard as a kid & young adult. Some day you'll have backstage passes for every concert in rock n roll heaven...you'll hear me yelling from the cheap seats...
Your are so right. Sad day when Chank died. He was a loyal, true friend. My cuz was Red Dog, so I had heard of Chank.💕💕 The road goes on forever Friend!
Agreed Nick❗ The vocals on WHIPPING POST is epic. Especially the very ending , when he sounds like he is in so much pain. Stupendous performance. So happy these 2 REACTORS get it.
Gregg was vocal, and Played the Hammond B 3 ORGAN. Two drummers, two lead guitars, epic bass and ALL were masters. No auto tune, no engineering magic, just straight up band playing with so much talent, love, skill and dedication. And they always gave credit to past blues masters or who ever influenced them. But they mixed it up and had their own sound, genre.✌🏼✌🏼💕💕
This IS southern rock with a kick of blues n whatever else Gregg threw in he was a legend then n still now!! RIP Gregg n Duane yawl r sorely missed. And believe this man can take u to church any day of the week.
I’m glad y’all got to meet The Allman Brothers Band. They put on the most amazing live show I’ve ever seen, with no tricks, just musicianship. They had a connection that was nearly telepathic. Two of these originals are still alive: Dickey Betts and Jaimoe the drummer. I know it’s long, but you should do “Whipping Post” from the Fillmore East. It’s definitive. There’s also Dickey Betts’ “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed”, Gregg Allman’s “Dreams”, and a great version of “Stormy Monday”. Thanks.
That is swing, funk, jazz, blues, rock. They've got a lot of different elements in their music. That beat is a swing beat, the slide blues, the bass funk, and it all rocks and swings. Amazing, amazing band, especially live. Pure genius.
Best live band ever. Their concerts were incredible. At one in Atlanta the crowd called them back for 5 encores. The cops took the stage, called for house lights to be turned on and threatened to arrest the band if we didn't leave.
As one who saw them in action in 71, 72 through tragic deaths of Duane then Barry, young generation's discovery of the band anew makes me very happy! It certainly is a great gain for this generation to appreciate a true gem unlike anything nowadays.
Same here! Saw them play for free in a park about a week before their first album came out and they hit it big. Been a fan ever since. I'm so happy to see younger people catching on to great music!
Not only are there two drummers, but one thing they are well known for is playing dual synchronized lead guitars. You can hear it really well in Melissa, Jessica, and Blue Sky, for example.
Thankful for all the music I was exposed to during my formative years, some of it just grabs hold of you and doesn't let go. This is one of those bands. RIP Duane and Gregg
The ABB was final act to close the Legendary Filmore Easr on NYC. Thank you Bill Graham for you vision in helping the ABB reach the successes they had.
Guys, this is my favorite band! Slide guitar is Duane Allman, vocals and organ Greg Allman. Drums Jamoi and Butch. Dickey Betts lead guitar and Barry on Base. All gone now except Brother Jamoie. I will miss them forever.
Saw the Allman Brothers in 1983 in RFK stadium. It was a southern rock fest with The Outlaws, 38 special, Molly Hatchet, and Marshall Tucker. Great Show.
Just an fyi - Greg Allman was touring and recording right up until his death of liver cancer in 2017. His final album, released shortly after his death is a masterpiece.
Founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, Gregory LeNoir "Gregg" Allman, who with his Hammond B-3 organ, and soft but growling voice helped create a sound that was simultaneously jazz, rock, blues, and parts San Francisco jam band, and that became the defining tone of Southern rock music,
I have seen the Allman Brothers live three times the 70s the 80s and the 90s love Gregg Allman and his brother Duane yes they had two drummers. And a percussionist😮😊 it was beautiful buy percussionist I mean a Conga player😊
These guys INVENTED Southern Rock which is Blues-Rock and even a little Southern Country rolled with some jazzy chords just for taste. Duane was a Swamper at Muscle Shoals Studio and played the guitar on Wilson Pickett's cover of the Beatles "Hey Jude". Dickie Betts the other guitarist studied jazz and he gives it those taste chords and modal lines.
Greg was by far the most soulful white vocalist ever. Some will tell you it's Joe Cocker, others might try to convince you it's Rod Stewart, it's neither. It's Greg Allman and no oneo else sounds like him or even comes close. RIP Greg.
This is my favorite Allman Brothers Band song. It kind of hits home, it brings back a memory of what was an uncomfortable situation at the time but years later became very funny.
Duane Allman (Guitar and Slide Guitar) was a producer and session musician in Muscle Schoals, AL before the 2nd attempt at an Allman Bros. Band. Duane famously worked with Aretha Franklin and Percy Sledge. When Duane and Greg Allman and the band decided to try again is when they had success. The entire band are Session class musicians. They can (and do) play anything from Rock, to Blues, to Country, to Gospel, to Funk, to Jazz. This was an interacial, long-haired, hippie band from Jacksonville, FL in 1970 who played Instrumental Jazz live at a concert ("In Memory of Elizabeth Reed") and it freakin' sold Platinum level records. These cats could cook!
I love them all but Gregory was ans ways will be my man..met him many times a nicer man you'll ever meet..unfortunately he died 5-27th-2017 at the age of 69..they rocked my world since I was 17 and still rocking with at 71..so glad you're loving them too ..Thanks!👍✌️
Greatest live album ever. Give a listen to Duane Allman and Aretha Franklin doing The Weight. She wanted the white cat. Also Wilson Pickett and Duane Allman doing Hey Jude. Wilson Pickett was the one who hit with the nickname Sky Dog.
The Holy Trio of Southern Rock is Lynard Skynard, Little Feat, & The Allman Bros. Band. Skynard leans into the Metal and Blues sound. Little feat is Funk and Country Phychadelic Rock & The Allmans are heavy into the Blues side 💙 side of Rock with a lot of open Phychadelic jams.
I read Greg's autobiography. There was a black man in his town which helped him learn to play guitar and sing. I don't know when he learned to play the organ. But he plays guitar also.
Great Southern rockers. I live in NYC and they play the Beacon Theater every year to a PACKRD house. That's Duane Allman (RIP). Listen to his slide guitar on "Blue Sky". "Midnight Rider"..... unreal.
I bought this double album back in 1971 when it came out. I remember having friends over and CRANKING IT UP. It was the first band, that I recall, to have TWO DRUMMERS and TWO LEAD GUITARISTS. This band had it all. Gregg Allmans vocals were simply great.
In 1973 there was a concert in upstate NY at Watkins glen speedway. It featured Allan brothers, The Band zn d The Grateful Dead. I was lucky as I lived 30 miles from there and attended. It turned out with over 600,000 people. most ever for an outdoor concert.
Great, great performance. For this suburban kid in Michigan, what set the Allman Brothers apart was their blues foundation, along with their power and musicianship. You know what other band's extended percussion section is part of their sound? Little Feat. Thanks again, peace!
Duane died at 24. I think Fillmore he was 22 . Greg was 19. 20. They were country kids who grew up with gospel, country, bluegrass. Duane was playing with the stars at 17. Just think is They could have 3 or for more years with Duane.
You guys are so fun to watch learn about our “old” music. Being 14 in 1975 was the greatest time on Earth for a teenager with all the music coming out in this era and even a few years before! I wouldn’t want to have been born in any other time frame, at least music wise!
When I was a teenager in the late 80’s my Dad turned me onto the Allman Brothers & I turned him onto Metallica. It got to the point that he was listening to Metallica more than me & I was listening to the Allman Brothers more than him. We were lucky enough to see the Allman Brother live together 4X & Metallica 5X. Unfortunately he isn’t with us anymore he passed away recently & there isn’t A day that goes by where I don’t miss him. I will always be thankful to both bands for bringing us so close together.
I'm a huge fan of the Allman Brothers band and I'm so happy you both enjoy their music. Just in case you're interested this band continues to this day, with some of the members being related to the founding members. Here's a live performance of them singing one of the original band's popular songs "The Allman Betts Band - Midnight Rider (Allman Brothers Band Cover)" and the second lead guitarist was Dickey Betts he's a guitar G.O.A.T also. And this is a live performance "Allman Brothers Band - Come On In My Kitchen" the Rhythm & Blues duo Delaney and Bonnie recorded the song in an acoustic medley with Duane Allman on Dobro, released on their 1971 album "Motel Shot" RIP: Duane, Gregg, Berry, and Butch 🔥💔🙏 U R Missed another tragic fact is that on Nov. 11, 1972 barely over a year after Duane Allman's death, Berry Oakley (bassist) is killed in a motorcycle accident only a few blocks from where Duane Allman's fatal motorcycle accident occurred a year earlier. This band is from Georgia...this is truly southern rock at it's best. Wonderful reaction guys thanks so much for sharing 🎶💖🎸🎸
