The Alta Via 1 in 7 days

While everyone recommends doing the Alta Via 1 in at least 8 days, we found that 7 days hit the sweet spot of spending the best part of the day hiking, with plenty of time to enjoy the evenings and mornings. Our route had two small variations from the 'standard' route, involving the low route to Croda di Lago, and staying higher to hit Col di Baldi instead of Rifugio Palafavera. And we took one glorious gondola down from Lagazuoi.
I tried to capture areas that I did not see much in existing videos--I hope you find this a pleasant watch, and educational if you are planning a trip to this magnificent area.

Hi, This just came up on my feed.. superb video! not quite exact but very close to the route we followed 2-3 weeks ago! We were incredibly lucky and the only rain we had were a couple of mountain storms late in the day when we’d finished for the day! Rest of the time it was pristine cloudless and stunning! The combination of incredible dramatic scenery and cameraderie from fellow hikers made for a fantastic experience and missing it already!

So delighted to hear that you had such a wonderful time with amazing weather! What did you think about the north to south route, vs. the notion of going the opposite way?
@simonlewis8507
@simonlewis8507 17 дней назад
@@johnsonism Definitely North to South. That incredibly steep pass down to the Lake I wouldn’t have fancied the other way!

@@simonlewis8507 Totally didn't think of that. Fair call! I'm the sort that prefers going up a steep slope vs. down. The descent to Fontana was the worst for me!

I can watch and admire the Dolomites many times: it calms, surprises and delights.

So very much agreed. And I love how different people capture them in their different ways.

Nice footage of Alta Via 1! I did AV in July as well. I had some thunderstorms in the middle of the day. It was a great trip. Thank you for sharing!

Way to survive the thunderstorms! We really lucked out and stayed dry!

Thanks for the video! Reminded me of all the places I'd walked through when we did the AV1 at the beginning of August.

I know this will be tough to answer, but which did you like better…..This hike or Walkers Haute Route? We did the TMB last year and have both these hikes on the list to do.

I honestly liked the Alta Via 1 more. Much more dramatic scenery, the life at the rifugios was more fun, and the routes were not as much of a grind. But I do recommend both!

Hey, remember me? 🙂 Since hiking the AV1 last summer, I've been reliving the experience through videos from other hikers. What a pleasure it was to have one pop up from someone I had actually met on the trail; my daughter and I even make a cameo at 3:14 (me feeding my face, appropriately)! Very well done--great camerawork, and nice music. It was nice meeting you both; hope to see you again sometime.

@@johnsonism Haha, I'll leave that one to you guys. I loved AV1, but it was about my limit in terms of exposure. I'll watch your future video though. 😀

Hey, amazing video. Just in time for my preparations for next year and AV1. Could you share your experience in all the places you stayed? And also, could you share the any more details of the route you take? Like elevation gain each day and etc. I know it is a big ask. Just trying to do similar timing 7 days. Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed the video! Quick rundown of the huts: - Fodara: So nice. Luxury. Good as a hotel. - Gallina: Lovely. Double room. Handy place to stay if Lagazuoi is booked. - Croda di Lago: Cozy, rustic, bunk rooms. Get a sauna reservation! - Coldai: Rustic, a little cramped, but epic views - Carestiato: Cozy, more modern - Fontana: Lovely last night, though consider the hut before if you want a sunrise hike on your last day As for elevation, I use OnTheGoMaps for roughing that out once you pick your route. Good luck!

Hi Joey, who did you book the trip through or did you book the rufigios separately? Hoping to do this trip for my wife's 40th next year.
@johnsonism
@johnsonism 5 месяцев назад
Booked all of them separately! I recommend figuring out your options for days 1 and 2, and then you figure out what the rest of your trip would look like. Then send in your reservation requests, and based on what you get, reserve the rest. A little tricky, but once I had my options lined up, I reserved everything in two days. Good luck!

Great footage. Would you say that you’re experienced hikers? How were the legs feeling when hiking ~20km each day?
@johnsonism
@johnsonism 7 месяцев назад
We are on the average side : ) I think the only day that was uncomfortable was Rifugio Carestiato to Rifugio Fontana. I would recommend staying at Rifugio Pramperet and end on a longer day so that the legs were fresh for the final big climb (and the weather is less of an issue in the morning). Plus, you get a shot at an amazing sunrise. Otherwise, the elevation was very reasonable and the track made for easy walking 90% or more of the time. Good luck!

Are there parts of this hike that you can maybe skip and take a train to the next stop like you can in switzerland via alpina route ?
@johnsonism
@johnsonism 7 месяцев назад
Yup! I think there are three passes where buses come through: Passo Falzarego (beneath Lagazuoi), Passo Gau, and Passo Duran. If I had no choice but to skip a section, it would be the final part after Passo Duran, but that's still a beautiful hike.

Maybe one day I'll have a fancy DSLR with a cool mic, but for now all I have is a rather banged up iPhone 8 : )
