I met Pete Townshend in 1982. He came in the bookstore where I worked in Chicago while the Who was on tour. He turned out to be very nice, stuck around while I ran down the block to buy his solo album (All the Best Cowboys) for him to autograph. I'd seen the movie about the Who, "The Kids are Alright" multiple times and asked him a question about it. (Obligatory Bass Content for this anecdote) The name of Rick Danko, the Band's bass player, appears in the credits of the movie, but I could never spot him in the film. I asked Townshend about it and he said the director had gone way over budget on the film, editing and re-editing it. Danko had been hanging out in Los Angeles with Keith Moon and Ringo but after the credits had been finished the director edited that footage out. In fact, Townshend said, they finally took the project away from the director because he wouldn't quit editing the movie over and over again. By the way, I still have the autographed album.

Jeff Stein was the director, and it was his first film. let the director have his art to himself, I say. check out his several part interview here all about the experience. he looks like Harpo Marx.

Trick of the Light was about a guy worried about his sexual performance with a prostitute. Hence the term "trick."

Who By Numbers and Who Are You are both incredibly GREAT! My only issue with Who Are You was the recording quality didn't seem as good as it should have been. The songs themselves are great and Moon played GREAT (just took a while to get THAT GREAT TAKE! They all sounded awesome!

The Who By Numbers is my all time favorite. Artwork was done by Entwistle. Dreaming from the Waist is one of my favorites. So is However Much I Booze (that bass run is phenomenal) and lyrically I can relate.

Thank you for your reviews and isolated bass tracks for my favorite bassist. I imagine you may have been constrained by time or patience, but the bass line on "In a Hand or a Face" deserves mention. The Who were a great 3-piece band in the studio. Props also to your low key and enjoyable narration. Thanks again.

~ It was Pete Townshen who was knocked out; he took a swing at Daltrey, so Rog gave him an uppercut that lifted him off the floor and landed him in the hospital.

in reference to Keith on the cover, the Isle of Wight cover has an unplanned coincidence. one of Keith's cymbals looks like a golden halo right over his head..( we all know how angelic he was). and he seems to be sheltered by it. interesting photograph.

Pete didn't like playing "Dreaming..." and "Sister Disco", not bc of the song itself, but bc of Rogers stage antics when those turned were played. Oh yeah, and thanks for your channel. Bravo, dude.

In the 1979-1980 shows The Who often added Trick of the Light to the set, Entwistle on the 8string, Townshend would switch to play the 2nd bass, so there was no guitar.

John was basically the guitarist on that track due to his 8 string bass. Pete had to hold down the root notes I guess. :)

I really love your John Entwistle videos. "Dreaming From the Waist" and "Trick of the Light" are two of my favorite Who songs. I have been a fan of The Who since 1978 and finally got to see them in 2000 at the "Gorge at George" in Washington State. Thank God I saw them in 2000 when John E was still alive! I was really hoping you would include one of his solo songs, "Talk Dirty," which has an incredible bass line. Anyway, thanks for your great work!

Album was released in October 1979? Keith Moon passed away on September 7, 1978. I remember listening to this song as a child in 1978. Fact check needed on the release date. Great video series on the Ox!

You did a stellar job in going through John’s tunes. He was so stylistically unique. I used to watch him play live at the China Club in Hollywood, and I was able to talk with him about four times. He was a gentle giant. You are a great player too. Thank you for all of this work that you did. One thing I wanted to add is that when the song, "Guitar And Pen" came out on the album, "Who Are You," I wasn't crazy about it. I don't know why. But as time has gone on, I have come to really enjoy the song because of the huge build up and releases that occur in the song. If you listen to each time Keith Moon is spraying his drums and cymbals at the end of each of the chromatic climbs, you will also notice how John Entwistle starts to slide his bass several times to enhance the explosion going on with the drums. It's John's intuitive playing.
@superamanda

Entwistle didn't write sister disco. The song isnt about disco. It's an esoteric song about struggle and ego.

What do you all think of John's sound from after Who's Next? I absolutely hate it! Too treble-y! I saw John play many times live in the 1990s, and figured he played with so much treble because of his hearing being shot. I talked to him several times, and it was like those old films of Edison, with everyone having to yell directly into his ear!
@christinecollins6648

I agree, it was in reaction to his hearing loss. I don’t hate it. It’s interesting- almost a third type of instrument

Legends of Bass Thank you " That was a great insight and sound down Thunder fingers memory lane" John Entwistle was absolutely my all time favorite." - My Great WHO and John memory was " 82" show in Philadelphia and I was about center right halfway to the stage " Outdoor Stadium" and what I recall was John's sonic waves from his bass just pounding off my chest and with Townshend's guitar just slashing the stadium " The ground rumbled for 2 and a half hrs. They had a massive sound system for that tour and the power of their sound " Shook" the stadium at times." LOL I think the ground is still rumbling AND I ENJOYED YOUR JOHN ENTWISTLE SERIES.

Legends of Bass By the way - I forgot to mention as being a WHO fan for 35yrs. your bass playing for JE. to my WHO trained ear " Was Pretty Dam Good" - I can tell you put the time and research BECAUSE it showed in how well you played in John's range and tone and how well you put the video together - " John was a beast and a unique singer also." Did you come across a early and rare JE WHO song called MR. Jekyll and Hyde " It has a dark spooky sound" but as always in a WHO humorous way - I also like Chris Squire of YES - Ben Orr from The Cars - Thank You and I will check back to your channel.
