It was a great pleasure to re-acquaint ourselves with 'Blue Wonder', the Broadblue R55 that was built at the Multihull Centre by Multimarine in a collaborative project with Broadblue Catamarans. At the time of its launch in 2014 it was likened to something out of 'Back to the Future', so far ahead of its time that few fully grasped its benefits. Now we're in the future and Blue Wonder's technologies are regular features on top of the range catamaran wish lists.
We've just done an extensive re-fit and systems upgrade with extensive solar panel array and lithium set up ready for Blue Wonder's new owners who will very sensibly be sailing her in warmer climates. We wish them very many happy times on board.
The team thoroughly enjoyed this little test sail, which gives you a good overview of some of the gems hidden in these super stylish and fast hulls.

It is not so much a boat ahead of its time, more the case of others behind the times. Thanks for the vid.

More dependent on electricity is not MY idea of advanced.

I guess it depends on how and where you plan to use it.

@@timdunn2257 But most modern offshore boats and certainly multihulls are, unless you go for a retro construction boat. this automated

@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 Huh? Boats haven't changed, people are just loading a lot more high tech junk on them. I sailed across the Pacific in the days when navigation required a sextant. One lightning strike, and you have a half million dollars of high tech junk, on "today's" boats. So, we end up with yachties who call the coast guard if their high tech junk breaks down, which I find shameful. I didn't even have a radio to call for help with.

The Rapier 550 is my wet dream when it comes to fast cruising catamarans.

You addressed many things that I don’t like about each of the different models…. The video doesn’t show it but I am sure you have engineered redundant systems on a boat that size…. Great job and hope you get lots of sales as a result

There were lots of singlehanders with no motorized / electric / electronic junk on their boats in the 70s.

Make a boat big enough and you can put in all kinds of gizmos that you'd never see on a 34ft boat. Nothing mysterious or magical about that...

It’s not a case of size with this vessel in fact it has less hardware like winches etc than many smaller boats as for the electronic displays …your probably holding as much computing power and touch screens are pretty naff outdoors unless you are lucky… but that’s just the way things have been heading everywhere. 🤷🏻 It’s the way it’s been arranged that makes it different. By putting the main helm ahead of the mast you give one open space that can be set out as you like. Open forward cockpits are not new and have proven their worth ditto the inspiration this boat created for others. It puts you safely and comfortably at the mast base so your lines don’t have to follow long torturous routes back to an exposed wildly pinching windswept wet cockpit inherited from traditional monohulls. And for when you want to watch the sails and feel the rudders you can sail it from a tiller at the rear. Using a remote control position or hand held unit. The design will benefit from the advances in electric hybrid power and regeneration under sail that have already made such an impact on sailing along with more solar power and modern batteries. Another advance area is in glass. There are lighter greener and stronger forms arriving. The lack of turbulence behind the vessel tells you it’s capable and efficient. A short cut straight out to the fore deck and nets might be the only addition I can see. The only other area for development might be the choice of hull materials … there’s a huge move to shift away from the more polluting energy intensive materials. 🧙‍♂️😎 Clive
