@@dotmurphy7279 It has been proven that an emissary for Reagan went to Iran and made a deal-- it was a deal made by a USA civilian, not the government, and as such was and is completely illegal. It is remarkably parallel to the same type of move made by Nixon's campaign in 1968, as civilians they approached South Vietnam and convinced them to reject the Paris Peace Accords, in order to secure Nixon's election, which it did. Neither of these crimes have ever been punished, and in fact the Republicans have become more and more emboldened because they've never been held accountable.

I remember touring the reactor at Chalk River in the late sixties and we were shown how they shielded the floor under the base of the reactor by pouring several feet of concrete onto it. We were also told that US Navy personnel cleaned up the site. The re-built reactor served for many years and not only was part of a research lab but also supplied a large proportion of the world’s medical isotopes. The US Navy personnel were not identified at that time and it wasn’t until President Carter was elected that we learned about his role.

I have lived in the Ottawa Valley, downstream of the NRX and NRU reactors, for much of my life. I read of Jimmy Carter's involvement in the operation to clean up Chalk River's NRX in Ottawa newspapers soon after his nomination as the candidate of the Democratic Party in 1976, At the time, my reaction to the story was "Wow!" It still is. Around these parts, people my age have been aware of his contribution for decades, and we are grateful for it. Not only did Canada need expert help from the U.S., the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Navy had an interest in learning how best to deal with such incidents. Jimmy Carter's after-action report was useful in the development of contingency plans in both countries.

President Carter and his wife Rosalyn visited my hometown of Winnipeg on several occasions, helping out on several Habitat For Humanity builds here. He's probably not the best president the US has had, but he's definitely a decent caring man who lives his faith and works to make the world a better place. This was an important story to tell, as President Carter was maligned as a micro manager even determining who had court time on the White House tennis courts. Perhaps micro managing was not a good trait for a President , but it clearly was an exceptional trait in the nascent nuclear navy and for our brothers and sisters in Canada. Exceptional human being , a man of service . I hope his passage is sweet. Thank you for telling this story.
