I am today in Yangjiang, an important city located along the South China Sea, and I am to here to learn about one of the most significant and ambitious underwater archaeological projects in China. The rescue mission of a ship sunken more than 800 years ago!

It was thought that Zheng He (1371-1435)'s treasure ships were massive, up to 100m long. By comparison, the ships of the Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) was a puny 21m long.

Wow, China is going to bring back a Chinese ship that has been sunk for more than 800 years ago during the Song Dynasty. China has been trading and sailing in the South China Sea for thousands of years and undoubtedly there are many treasures on the sea bed waiting to be discovered.

Fascinating, I had not heard of this project and museum before! Given the thousands of years of Chinese maritime history there must be incredible treasures on innumerable sunken ships, thank you for this video!

There has been some located around the South China Sea in recent times when two large ancient shipwrecks were found about a mile deep on the northwest slope of the sea. One of the ships appeared to export mainly porcelain, while the other imported wood. These well-preserved relics are believed to be from the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty (1506 to 1521) and hold high historical, scientific, and artistic value. Additionally, an intact 12th-century junk was discovered on the bottom of the South China Sea in 1987, providing a priceless time capsule

Unbelievable what China is capable of. When it is deemed important enough. Everyone else just talks about what they are capable of doing. China just does it. Then talk about it.

You bet . Remind me how several yrs ago , pantygon was afraid China would retrieve their crashed F jet fighter from SCS if they leave it in the bottom of the sea. Unable to retrieve it themselves they hired pte ships salvage companies for the task. Actually only one salvage company could do it but bcos it is Chinese owned , the pantygon refused to hire them at first but eventually they were hired as the other salvage companies that were hired were not up to the task lol
