In May 1961 while all these events unfolded, over in Hamburg, Germany, an obscure 4-piece rock and roll group from Liverpool, England without a recording contract, were playing a 3 month stint at the TopTen Club of gruelling 8-hour nightly sessions, that turned them into the top musical act in Liverpool when they returned in July. There will be more to this story in time (rest assured). Fred - another superb video - you're carefully balanced mix of important news issues, pop culture and the showcase of consumerism that the world experienced, is not only entertaining, but a tremendous time capsule of the period - as always - great work! Kind regards, Terry, Australia.

Days gone by. It was women's fashion and hair styles, men's thin ties and carefully groomed hair and clean shaven faces (I can almost smell Vitalis and Aqua Velva coming through the screen). Rob and Laura Petrie. The demise of tailfins. And overseeing it all was JFK and his "New Frontier." Thanks, Fred.
@freeguy77
@freeguy77 18 дней назад
I don't believe JFK watched much TV when busy at the office 20 of 24 hours! But he could eat lunch at "home" as I fondly remember that funny line! The more war and big government is stirred up by the political crazies (on both sides), the more I miss his desire for peaceful co-existence with the other nations! June 10, 1963 speech at American University, the best speech (for peace, against war) ever given by a President since Thomas Jefferson!

I remember May 1961 vividly, even though I was two years and nine months old. We boarded a Greyhound bus and rode 120 miles to a new place. As time went on I would find out why -- my parents had divorced and we were moving back to Mom's hometown, where I would grow up. After we arrived, Mom, my sister and I lived with my grandparents for 18 months, then moved into our new house.

I believe I love the videos about the years prior to my birth even more than those after - though all are great, Fred! Though I came along in 1965, my folks were instrumental in instilling in me what the late 40s, 50s and early 60s were like. Being born in 1941, they preceded the boomers and were of that “lost generation” - part of the late 50s teen scene. So I have a real love and feel for those pre-hippy, more innocent years.

Nice job, Fred! 0:38 - I love those magazine prices back then. Just 20 cents for LIFE & 25 for LOOK. TV GUIDE was just 15 cents until inflation raised its price to 20 in June 1974 and 25 just 3 months later. 10:48 - I'd also love to buy a 15-cent burger. :) 12:30 - I'm a bit surprised that Dinah would be plugging a sitcom that was going to be on another network. I've read that Carl Reiner moved to the W. Coast to write for Dinah, so I'm sure he had some pull in this.

They were really bad but not as bad as the video but it isn't Fred's fault since the film is disintegrating. In the day, you could hold the rabbit ear antennas and it'd come in sharper but if you were holding them you weren't able to watch obviously. There was a lot of snow and black lines scrolling up the screen. You were lucky to get more than one channel. When the wind was just right and at night, you might catch another channel or a very snowy bull fighting channel from Mexico on Saturday.

@bettyir4302
@bettyir4302 Месяц назад
@@michaelsergejhelgesson1637 In the 70s, when paid for channels like HBO and Showtime first began, people would work around having to pay for them. You'd have to already be paying for basic cable. Attach a long length of antenna wire to the UHF connection on the tv and wrap some foil around the wire. To tune in the picture, you'd move the foil up and down the wire. Of course, the picture would be in black and white and was very snowy but you could see it enough to know what was happening. To get the sound, you generally needed a second tv. FYI, Scandinavian and Russian tv reception in the city was better than many areas of the US.
