Yes! It's perhaps less of a rom-com because of the situation that Dave is in, but Kevin Kline plays such a kind and decent man that I think you will find him very appealing.
I have to second (or fifteenth or eighty-second) the recommendation of Dave. It's such a fun little lighthearted (for the most part) take on similar territory and Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, and Charles Grodin are all wonderful!
Thanks, I always wondered about that. It was easy to imagine that the movie could have inspired the TV series. They are very similar in tone and 'feel.'
@@madpadukNot quite. Sorkin reused the line asking about the virtue of a proportional response, but the emotions behind it are totally opposite. In the movie, Pres. Shepherd is concerned about civilian casualties, like the hypothetical Libyan janitor. In the show, Syrian Air Defense bombs a U.S. transport plane carrying Pres. Bartlet’s personal physician, and he’s pissed off and wants to basically level Syria to the ground (a military aide asks him if he wants to “carpet-bomb Damascus”). Bartlet wants a “disproportional response,” until Leo talks him down.
As soon as I saw this, I thought "Oh, she is going to LOVE this movie." How can you not? It's just a great film with a stellar cast and awesome dialog.
Just a sweet heartwarming film. My mom likes it a lot. Being a Sorkin penned film, there’s lots of standout dialogue. Two such lines I always get a kick out of being Shepherd’s line, “You think there’s a florist in there planning an assassination on the off chance that I MIGHT be stopping by?” and at the end when A.J. asks how Shepherd plans to win Sydney back, Shepherd admits, “Well, I haven’t worked that out yet. But I’m sure that groveling will be involved.”
Love them all. So many memorable one-liners in this film. “Let’s take him out back and beat the $h1t out of him!!” 😅 and I always get pumped when he says “My name is Andrew Shepherd, and I AM the president!” 😅😊Great movie
Michael Douglas, Annette Benning, and Martin Sheen play their roles very well in this movie. However, this movie really shows the versatility of Michael J Fox, an actor robbed of so many more performances due to Parkinson's disease. Back to the Future launched him into the movie landscape while Family Ties introduced him to American audiences through television. Other films kept him in the family-friendly genre for a while, such as Teen Wolf and Doc Hollywood. This film and his trip into horror with The Frighteners showed that Michael can play the very serious roles. Homeward Bound and Atlantis the Lost Empire showcase his voice acting ability. Spin City forever stands as his best adult role on TV. He now stands as an example of never letting a physical challenge from stopping him from speaking out and moving towards finding a permanent end to every neurological disease and disorder.
The performance he gave was spectacular, and watching this reaction I just realised it took 2 actors in the West Wing to almost match it and those were both very good actors. Michael J Fox was a massive talent as an actor and is a wonderful human being.
"My name is Bob Rumson, and I'm running for president. I'm Andrew Shepherd, and I AM the president." I love this closing speech, plus Douglas and Bening have excellent chemistry.
"Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (1939.b&w), traditionally considered a classic and major romantic-comedy-drama with a political twist. The film is #29 on AFI"s top 100 list, starring James Stewart and Jean Arthur and directed by Frank Capra of "It's A Wonderful Life" fame. You'll never finish your "catching up on the best movies ever" until you've seen this one.
"I am just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love me" That would be Notting Hill. And I would love to see your reaction to that one whether you've seen it or not. Such a great romance comedy.
@@Bdixon9158 She's *_got_* to have seen it, right? I think she's just forgotten that particular scene. And I second the motion of having her react to it, even if she's already seen it! 👍👍
18:34 " 'What About Bob.' That's -- That's that guy, that's -- Right?" Yes. That's Richard Dreyfus. You've also seen him (much earlier in his career) in Jaws as the marine biologist from out of town who ultimately joins the sheriff on the fishing boat.
@@eshuorishas9987 "The Goodbye Girl" is a Dreyfuss/Marsha Mason/ Quinn Cummings romcom jewel. One of the best. Being a Neil Simon story helps. Dreyfuss won an Oscar for his role - at 30 years old.
Not forgetting, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind...we're getting into dangerous territory here..., when Actors could 'act' - & not work for Disney or Marvel....
I had to take a few seconds to remember where that line was from. I was going rush and put it in the comments but I always go through them to make sure I’m not repeating what someone else has already answered.😊
Michael Douglas has not only been in a number of great films, he also produced the Oscar winning movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." He is the son of Hollywood royalty, actor Kirk Douglas, who had a tremendous career. An old classic movie you might like which mixes politics and romance is "Mr Smith Goes to Washington. "
Key Michael Douglas films include "Coma" (1978), "The China Syndrome" (1979), "Romancing the Stone" (1984), "Fatal Attraction" (1987), the ORIGINAL "Wall Street" (also 1987; the Shia LeBoeuf is a sequel), and "The War of the Roses" (1990). Everything from nuclear holocaust to a bitter divorce. So basically the same stuff. Also, "Shining Through" a hilariously botched attempt at a World War II "drama". Notable for famed film critics Siskel and Ebert pretty much cracking up as they tore it a bevy of holes in their review show.
Doing the research for this movie is what got Sorkin to write The West Wing. He had so much information about how American politics in D.C. work, and so many ideas for stories about these characters, and no way to fit it into a 2-hour film, so he pitched it as a TV series. You can absolutely see who all of these characters become: AJ (played by Martin Sheen who becomes Jed Bartlet) becomes Leo (same name as Sydney's boss); Mrs. Chapel (President's secretary) become Mrs. Landingham; Louis (Michael J Fox) is a hybrid of Josh and Sam; Leon (David Paymer) becomes CJ, and so on. Beyond Martin Sheen's promotion, Anna Deveare Smith, who plays Robin McCall here, played Nancy McNally on West Wing; Nina Siemazko (Sydney's roommate) played Bartlet's middle daughter, Ellie; Joshua Malina (whom you recognized from Scandal) played Will Bailey on West Wing, and so on. He referred to this as the dress rehearsal for West Wing.
I have always thought that you would love this movie. It is one of my favorites. The chemistry between Michael Douglas and Annette Bening is off the chart. Actually the whole cast was perfectly chosen. Thank you for watching it.
I forgot how much I love this movie. One of my favorite lines is near the beginning, when Sydney is at the WH for the first time. Just before Shepard comes in, she's describing him as the "Chief Executive of Fantasy Land", then he comes in the room and says... "Let's take him out back and beat the shit out of him"... Oh BTW you might like "My Fellow Americans" staring Jack Lemon and James Garner.
Great cast in this film. Annette Benning also stars in one of my favourite Harrison Ford movies, Regarding Henry, which I think you will absolutely love.
"I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her." That's from Notting Hill. If you haven't seen it, you definitely should! It's exactly your kind of movie... a charming, sweet, romantic comedy. Also, to second what several others have commented- if you want another great presidential rom-com, you should check out Dave with Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver. It's a classic!
29:58 I always liked this scene :) "VOTE YOUR CONSCIENCE YOU CHICKENSHIT LAME-ASS-" (slams the phone) (Long pause) "We lost Jarrett." "I hope so. 'Cause, you know, if that was an Undecided then we need to work on our people skills."
A movie that goes under the radar often is called "The Game" i saw it in theaters when it came out, If you want to see a thriller, def worth a watch. Douglas was pretty terrific in it.
A young Martin Sheen co-starred in a movie with Michael Douglas's famous father, Kirk Douglas and brother Peter Douglas: "The Final Countdown" (1980). Iconic theme song by pop band Europe.
Not only was Richard Dreyfuss, the president’s opponent, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and in What About Bob but he was also the other survivor in Jaws (the young oceanographer).
Other Presidential movies i recommend: "Dave", "My Fellow Americans", and "My Date With the President's Daughters"(which is an oldschool Disney Channel movie 😂).
Can’t believe I missed this! I’ve been waiting years for someone to do a reaction to this movie. The comedy and drama both hit so well! Such a delight.
Thank you so much. I have been waiting so long for you to do this movie. "I am just a girl, standing in front of a boy..." Julia Roberts in Notting Hill, my favorite romcom.
I know you had said in the Con Air reaction that Romancing the Stone is another favorite of your dad's that you plan to watch. That stars Michael Douglas. His big career days were the late 80s through the 90s. Then he wasn't really in anything once he married Catherine Zeta-Jones and started a family. Then he was more recently in Ant-Man as Hank Pym. I saw an interview when that came out where he said his teenage son said his career was really gonna take off from being in Marvel. His son really doesn't understand that Michael Douglas was one of the major heartthrobs of the 90s because it was like a decade before he was born. Honestly, most of my fourth-of-July traditions were in my childhood and have kind of disappeared in recent years now that my family lives all over the country. But my favorite is that we used to hike 2 miles up Barr Trail (the 13-mile trail up Pikes Peak) and sit on a rock that was kind of an overlook. We called it Independence Day Ledge, and you could see all the fireworks in Colorado Springs from there. (You can't see the fireworks closest to it in Manitou Springs because a hill is in the way.) We stopped doing it once the Barr trail parking lot started charging for parking.
This is one of my favorite comfort movies, great writing, the acting is tremendous, Reiner did an excellent job directing, low key always in the mood to put this on, what a picture!
Why not? I'll bet it's a secret joy of at least a few of them too. Live your life, it they don't like it that's their problem and you're better off without them.
For years now, one of our favorite traditions has been watching the HBO miniseries, John Adams. It gives one appreciation for what our founding fathers, and John Adams particularly, faced before, during and after our inevitable break from Great Britain.
I was in a cheap gas station once and saw this DVD as a double feature with DAVE, which is another cute US president movie with Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver. It was $5. This was years before streaming was a thing.
'Dave' is such an underrated classic; one that I love going back & watching every year or two. Such an adorable, heartwarming movie; wish it got more attention from reactors!
Every time I watch this movie )or a reaction to it), I'm reminded how many lines Sorkin took word-for-word and took it over to "The West Wing," along with half the cast.
"Girl standing in front of a guy", the quote is. It is from Notting Hill, Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. Absolute favorite romantic comedy. You are going to love it.
Aaron Sorking who wrote that movie also wrote West Wing which had Martin Sheen as the president, it also had Josh Molina one of the presidents aids in that movie briefly in the TV show. West Wing came out in 99 this movie came out in 95. It makes you wonder if the success of this movie didn't catapult West Wing TV show to be created and almost over night success.
Michael DOuglas is the famous son of Kirk Douglas a famous actor from the 20th century . He costarred in "The Streets Of San Francisco back in the 1970s and was in Romancing the Stone with Kathlene turner, an action romance adventure that did well. He has been in so many movies since I cannot recount them all.
This movie was actually the inspiration for the West Wing series. It was originally pitched for Michael Douglas to star in it, but when he turned it down, Martin Sheen knocked it out of the park.
I also think the sitcom "Spin City" which came out a year after this movie where Michael J. Fox is a similar character except for the mayor of New York City.
The original concept of The West Wing was supposed to focus on the staff, and not so much on the President himself. If you take a look at the Pilot episode you will note that Martin Sheen only came in at the very last few minutes. It was his performance that prompted the writers to swing the camera in his direction and take notice, because he was definitely a force to be reckoned with. We should be glad that they did, one of the best TV shows of all time.
This was one of only a handful of movies my mum owned on DVD so I know it backwards and forwards. I've come to appreciate it myself as a kind of precursor to 'The West Wing' which is one of my favourite TV series of all time. Aaron Sorkin wrote the script for this then went on to create the series casting Martin Sheen as the President and a few of the other actors in different roles.
Great choice Cassie. This a classic movie. Annette Bening and Michael Douglas are amazing. Also, if you haven't; you should check out two other Michael Douglas movies. Basic Instinct (Sharon Stone) and Disclosure (Demi Moore) Excellent movies.
Since you love Presidential movies with romance and humor, then Dave should be ext on your list! I believe you saw Micheal Douglas in Romancing the Stone with Kathleen Turner.
Love, love love the line, "He's interested in only two things: making you afraid of it and telling you whom to blame for it. That's how you win elections." Sums up American politics perfectly.
Fourth of July tradition for me is a baseball game with a hot dog and soft pretzel. If there isn’t one in town, then I go to a hot dog place and get one with lots of stuff on it.
Richard Dreyfuss who played Senator Rumson, you said he was in What About Bob. When he was young, he played Hooper in the first Jaws movie. I really like this movie! I watch it every time I see it come on. I'm glad you enjoyed this movie.
Surreal seeing Martin Sheen here, but not as the President. West Wing is funny that way. Also, this is such a '90s movie. I miss the homelieness and coziness of '90s movies because everyday was like Christmas back then.
This movie is the inspriration that Aaron Sorkin used for writing his series "The West Wing". Martin Sheen who plays the president's chief of staff, goes on to play president Josiah Bartlett in TWW.
Micheal has been acting for close to 6 decades.has a successful career as both an actor and producer/director and has played on screen with some of the biggest names in hollywood.
The "Girl standing in front of the boy..." line is from Notting Hill. If you haven't seen it you should react to it. It's another romcom from the 90s with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.
Hi, Cassie. I'm glad Ben is doing better now.🙂 Also, congrats on you and Carly going to the Mission: Impossible movie premiere in the Big Apple 🗽🎉😁. My gosh, seeing you and her in those awesome dresses and meeting Tom Cruise gave me an absolute smile on my face. What an experience you two are going to relay to your loved ones for years to come. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
