Thank you, so much for this interesting and much needed description of a truly great Bible. I did a little research after this video and discovered that the very latest info on the Divine Name, is clearly showing that Jehovah is not as far off the mark as we previously believed. The latest research into Jewish Hebrew writings clearly indicate that the Divine Name was pronounced Yehovah/ Yehowah. Thank you, for leading me to this knowledge. Second issue is that the ASV is more accurate with regards to the description of 'worship' , more accurately obeisance, rather than cultivate worship which was given alone to God the father at the time of writing the original autographs.
excellent review (as usual)... i bought this ASV a few years back, and i was told back then that this was a complete "re-typesetting" of one original printing of the ASV, that is, a re-typesetting conformed exactly to that old printing.... i found it as i was searching all over the internet after one ASV with center-column references and complete translators notes (which was very hard to find), and i was positively surprised to find this one from Prolific Industries with both inner and outer margins together with center column... and it's so much better to have the notes in the margins rather than in footnotes... and it's an excellent printing and binding, very good work from Prolific Industries.... :-))
I absolutely love that 1901 ASV translation with it's many references. It is the very first Critical Text bible produced. And it came out before the Schofield Reference Bible, which is a plus!! That Nelson you showed made my mouth water! I want one and can't as yet find one. But the quest goes forward!
The ASV committee had some Harvard Unitarians on it, so the translation's occasional tendencies are unsurprising. Those tendencies notably disappeared from the RSV and NRSV.
I seem to remember that Burgon was displeased that a Unitarian was on the RV translation committee: "Dr. G. Vance Smith, the Unitarian Minister of S. Saviour's Grace Chapel, York" (Revision Revised, pg. 506). Thanks for the view and comment!
I'll half to say that I've always been a KJV Man. I have a ASV Bible AP . And I'll half to say i like it and enjoy reading. it. I think I'm going to get me a ASV . THAT doesn't mean i going to lay my KJV down. I really like your ASV BIBLE YEP
Very nice Bible. Large, but very nice. My dream bible would be this thick, all black letters, wide margin, and 10 to 11 point font with wide margins all around and yeah, in the Nkjv translation with all the translation noted but No commentary.

It would be like combining the book block of the verse by verse with the information in the open bible without the comments at the bottom of the pages, just t h e pure text with the notes and cross references. Also with wide margins and the same concordance found in their study bible. By the way, I've noticed an ESV Study Bible on your desk, have you done a review on it? I can't seem to find one that you've done. While I'm not a huge fan of study bibles, that one seems like a good one if there's such a thing.
@@edwardgraham9443 - no, the ESV Study Bible has appeared in one or two videos for comparison purposes, but I haven't reviewed it. So many others have reviewed it, I didn't think I'd have much new to say, and my copy is fairly old now -- I think I bought it in 2011. I agree with you about study Bibles -- I'd rather have a Bible with opaque paper and high quality print, and read the notes from a separate volume.
@@RGrantJones That's how I see it too. One of my difficulties is that, where I'm from (Jamaica), my choice for a good quality bible is very limited. It's either KJV or NIV and it's not the really good ones either. I have no problem with the KJV but the NIV is another thing. Buying Bibles from the USA is very expensive for me so when I do save enough money for one I try to get a really good product. Unfortunately, Thomas Nelson doesn't seem to think that making an NKJV Wide Margin is a good idea, even though I've seen on RU-vid many people asking for one. They do have the journal the word edition and I'm saving towards buying the large print edition though. But I love your videos. It usually takes me a year and some to save enough for a Bible, and when I'm ready to make that purchase I generally watch your videos because they are the most in depth on the Bible. Anyways, excellent videos and I'm still hoping TN will make a wide margin nkjv some time in the future.
At around 5:42 you can see that they have reference for the deutero/apochs (1 Maccabees). It is interesting that they chose to excise the books but leave in the references. I wonder how confusing this would be to the standard reader.
That definitely could be confusing. I believe I've seen the same thing in some King James Bibles -- references to books the publishers decided not to include. Thanks for the comment!
Thank you for your great reviews!.. I noticed your comparison with the ASV Logos Study bible @18:28 Do you still prefer the Prolific translation over the Logos ASV?... You ranked the Prolific as #3 favorite bible.. but the Logos didn't make even your "Favorite Study Bible list." Just asking because I'm wanting an ASV in a decent sized font....
Thanks for the question, Light on a Hill. Yes, I do prefer the Prolific edition over the Logos Study Bible. My primary reason for doing so is that I'm more comfortable using the standard reference system in the Prolific edition. But I also like the thickness of the paper, the clarity of the print, and the fact that it's new. The Logos Study Bible is more portable (thinner and lighter), and if those factors are important to you, it might work better for you.
Thanks for this real nice review, thorough and fair. I came real close to buying this last year but chose a used ASV (Nelson 757)on Ebay instead. I'm still searching high and low for a NKJV that has the following features: Black Letter Center Column References (with full suite of text refs.) Concordance Not a study Bible I do own a Holman Large Print Ultra Thin, but the printing is pretty inconsistent in that where the words of Christ would be red letter, the text gets thin. You could call this a "Words of Christ in Thin Letter" edition. I hate to bother you with this question, but is there any NKJV edition available that has the features I would like?
Not to my knowledge. The NKJV Classic Verse-by-Verse Center-Column Reference Bible comes close, but the words of Christ are in red. Perhaps one day Nelson will print it in black ink. Thanks for the comment!
@@RGrantJones I didn't think there was. Even Crossway's remake of the Classic Ref. Edition ESV, has red letter. Also, the Brenton's LXX paperback from Lulu is well made, but the ink is very light. Thanks for the tip on that one, you saved me money.

I ordered my copy on a Monday and it was here Thursday of the same week! But that was last August, long before anyone had heard of Covid-19. I have no reason to think they've stopped printing it. It is a high quality edition -- the only real negative being the size. Thanks for commenting!

Grant, Thank you for the review. I have this volume, but it sits in my library, collecting dust, along with my other modern English versions. When I heard of the NASB 2020 update about a year ago, I also found some interesting information about the codex Sinaiaticus. Did you know that it has been protected by Islam for over 1,000 years? I have had my issues with the many variants and ever changing text of modern English versions, but when I discovered this truth, I immediately put away all the modern English versions (except NKJV, MEV). I am not KJVO, but I am Traditional/Byzantine text only. The more I study textual criticism, I am led to trust the KJV. It does not change. If God is not the author of confusion (1Cor. 14:33), the antithesis leads to the enemy as the source. The fact that Catholicism is the source of the so called "oldest" manuscripts should alarm any true believer; but tied together with Islam??? My advice sir is to reject this document and all versions associated with it. I have peace now when I study the word. No more confusion over which version to trust. I use Stephanus as my main Greek text and the KJV as my main reader. It is my prayer that you will do the same. Please note that I do not sit in the seat of condemnation as do followers of Ruckman. I know believers that read modern English translations. When they ask me why I choose the KJV, I can say with conviction that it is the complete word of God in English. It is my prayer that you will come to the same conclusion. You are in my prayers always, for all your needs. Please pray for my health as COPD creates continued challenges. Peace, in Jesus name.

But since God clearly can and does use translations based on the Textus Receptus, I'm not at all inclined to try to argue you out of your position. What do you mean by claiming codex Sianiticus was "protected by Islam"? The codex was preserved by Orthodox monks at St Catherine's monastery in Egypt. After the 7th century Egypt was under Islamic rule but the Coptic Orthodox Church and monasteries continued to exist, preserving many ancient manuscripts and serving Egyptian Christians. Similarly it's a bit silly to praise kjv (translated from textus receptus) and condemn manuscripts preserved by the catholic church when textus receptus was compiled by the catholic Erasmus. I have great love for the kjv and I hope you're in good health, but I must object to historical inaccuracy.
I enjoyed the review and like the many instances of "Jehovah" ASV uses, though the wording is still as archaic as King James Version, if not more so. This must have been an era when difficult language was equated to clout. ASV uses the word "fornication" (in 40 verses), which many modern Bible Translations completely remove. For example: 1 CORINTHIANS 6.18 [18] Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. [ASV] [18] Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.[KJV] in 1946 it became popular to remove instances of "fornication" in the Bible, as the RSV New Testament was released in popular hardback edition shortly after the war was over, and becoming a major commercial hit in the publishing world. [18] Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. [RSV-1946 New Testament, and 1971 RSV edition] since then, many modern Bible translations have removed "fornication" from their translations. [18] Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the [a]immoral man sins against his own body. [NASB] [18] Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. [ESV] [18] Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. [NKJV] NLT, CSB, TEV, NIV, NCV, WEB and others have zero references to fornication. This may have been helpful to spur the post war Baby Boomer generation, where as after World War 1 there was a post war decline in birthrate. However, it was also helpful for the 60s sexual revolution. . . and still helpful today, for instance in being able to enjoy Superbowl halftime shows. Birthrate and GDP are the two top statistics nation-states concern themselves with. One theory is that authorities should entice the youth to get them interested in dating earlier, and if they start younger, families might be larger. For a modern Bible translation that still uses the word "fornication" try the New Revised Standard Version [18] Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself. [nrsv]
Fornication is actually a less inclusive word. It only includes thecs3xual act itself. Sexual immorality includes all aspects of immoral sexual behavior.
@@flintymcduff5417 Fornication is the Latin word, part of the Christian tradition for over a millennia, included in the Latin Vulgate and in all popular English translations for all these hundreds of years up until after World War II. So the translators had it wrong and the flock misled all this time, and Now we find out?? What else are the getting wrong? "homosexuality" for one! Why would Paul create a list a sins, every one a specific type, but throw "fornication" into the middle of the mix, which just means all the other words? That doesn't make any since, like saying "don't eat apples, oranges, fruit or lemons!" ("fruit" must be mistranslated in that case) The Bible Translators are playing social politics and human-farming-husbandry. Time to go back to the King James Version for sure!
