Colonel David H. Hackworth's time fighting the Chinese in Korea was marked by intense and brutal combat, where he distinguished himself as a formidable leader and soldier. As part of the 25th Infantry Division, Hackworth faced the Chinese People's Volunteer Army, which entered the Korean War in late 1950. He quickly adapted to the harsh conditions and relentless enemy tactics, earning a reputation for his aggressive and innovative approach to warfare. Leading from the front, Hackworth often found himself in the thick of the action, displaying exceptional bravery and tactical acumen. His ability to inspire and lead his men under fire resulted in numerous successful engagements against Chinese forces. Despite being wounded several times, Hackworth's resilience and commitment never wavered, earning him multiple decorations, including the Silver Star and Purple Heart. His experiences fighting the Chinese solidified his views on the importance of effective leadership and the brutal realities of ground combat.

I first came across the name of Col. David Hackworth while reading an Army publication I found in our company office. I was in the Marine Corps at the time. It was a thin pamphlet, co-authored with BGen. S.L.A. Marshall, a famous name I recognized. Looking back, I think Marshall probably had little to do with writing any of it. "A Vietnam Primer". The distillation of combat experience fighting the VC, their tricks and tactics. It was a fascinating read and a highly instructive little book. This was post-war, 1976-78, but it was still eye opening and very educational, a real primer in what infantry combat was all about.

I'm pretty sure the withdrawal from Afghanistan was the US most embarrassing retreat in history
