I'm playing a 1965 Fender Showman Amp with it's original 1x15 speaker cabinet (JBL D130F). I'm using a 1973 Fender Stratocaster and a 2088 Gibson Les Paul R9. This is the amp Jimi Hendrix recorded many tracks with and it also happens to nail the tone of Led Zeppelins first album (Jimmy Page used a Tele and a Flying V on Zeppelin 1, but I'm using a Les Paul here). The amp features it's original 4 RCA 6L6 Power tubes and is 85W.

When I saw Jimi play live in a tiny venue with maybe only 40-50 people there, Sound Machine opened the set. When Jimi played he played through two Dual Showman Silverface amplifiers. After the show I got to check out his white Strat in its case and take it out, then after that we met him as he was leaving. I was too tongue tied to talk to him, but my buddy asked him what amplifiers he preferred, and he said " Sound City PA's, and Marshall amplifiers." He was a really shy person, as bad as I was.

@@jwillyb870 You're right, as are MeanDisposition and Elliot Vernon. The sequence is roughly like this; With John Mayall (= f. inst. on the incomparable "Supernatural") Greeny played Marshall(s), as far as I recall JTM45. In the early days of Fleetwood Mac he used a Vox AC100, and around the time Kirwan joined he played an OrangeMatamp (forerunner for the OR120) with that elusive Orange Reverb Unit on top. After a while as a quintet, Greeny and Kirwan were both mostly playing Showman Reverbs on stage, but sometimes Tremoluxes for smaller gigs.

I didn't know that Jimi used a Showman amp in the studio. I thought this amp was primarly a surf thing. Judging from the thumbnail the cab even has the 15" JBL speaker with the metal dustcap that Dick Dale used. (commenting before the premiere)

Showmans and twins were a staple back then, everybody used them, for guitar and bass. It's not like there were tons of other options like there is now. Even Marshalls were rare in the US back then. Most music stores back then were little family-owned shops that didn't exactly cater to rock musicians.

Man I've been a Hendrix worshipper for nearly 20 years, inspired me to even pick up a guitar. I've always played Marshalls with Jimi's influence but these days I think some of Jimi's best tones were Fender amps. Right now I'm obsessed with Jimi at Winterland '68 and I'm pretty sure his sound that night is Fender heavy tho I believe he had Marshalls also on stage those nights.

I attended school in North Florida for a couple of years in a tiny little town. There was a man there who sold candy and pop to kids out of a little mobile storefront after school. His name was Butch Land, as I recall. Anyway, he had a trailer full of Fender amps from the sixties, including a couple of Dual Showman's. I never found out what happened to those. He offered to front a band, since I played guitar, but the town was so small we couldn't find the rest of the band.

Hi Johan. This amp company's website (www.sundragonamps.com/) implies Jimmy Page used a Supro Coronado on Led Zeppelin I. Jimmy Page is one of the co-founders. "Sundragon is a faithful recreation of the amplifier Jimmy used exclusively to create the groundbreaking sounds on Led Zeppelin 1 and other notable recordings such Joe Cocker’s With a Little Help from My Friends. A limited edition run of 50 hand built Sundragons will be made throughout 2019, all signed by Jimmy Page. Jimmy’s original amplifier started out life as a Supro Coronado. While on tour with Neil Christian the amplifier fell out of the band’s van. Not willing to give up on his beloved Supro, Jimmy had it restored. At that time the amplifier was also modified in significant ways. Jimmy realized that the sonic palette had changed to something new and unique. After being shrouded in mystery for more than 50 years, Jimmy has decided to share this extraordinary amplifier with the world. " That being said, the Showman is a really great sounding amp, with both the Les Paul and the Strat. With the Strat, I hear a lot of Hendrix sounds here and there. They sound really nice together.

I heard Eddie Kramer say that jimi used a showman for voodoo chile in a Tim Pierce video but I always thought it sounded more like a bassman.I've also read that he toured with them in the U.S. for a brief time. Thanks for the video Johan, it would be really cool if you could compare this amp to a dual showman which is the silverface version I think and/or a twin reverb, I heard the showman is basically a head version of it.
@JohanSegeborn
@JohanSegeborn 3 года назад
Hi! The BF Dual Showman is a Twin without reverb so Dual and Single Showman has one gain stage less. Single/Dual Showman refers to the cab 1x15 (8ohm) or 2X15 (4ohm)

I have read a lot of books about JH, one of them ´Jimi Hendrix Sessions´, and i don´t think they ever mentioned a Showman in the studio, but I have seen pictures from around ´68, where he used 2 Showmans as ´side monitors´ on stage. To people wanting to buy a Showman be sure to get the real D130F. Newer versions, even if they are Alnicos, don´t sound the same, and that means not as good. Showmans were used extensively by top dancebands in the late 60ties, but later they somehow disappeared for no good reason.

Mitch Colby makes an exact replica of Jimmy's amp. Jimmy loaned him his original to copy and he made 50 exact copies using NOS parts & valves. Mitch is also making exact clones but with newer parts & valves. Sundragon Amps: www.sundragonamps.com/

The most famous & biggest user of Fender Showmans was Ted Nugent. He would have tons of heads & cabinet stacks behind him live. That's why his hair was always flying around so much. Ted's Dual Showmans are waaaaaay louder than 100W Marshall at breakup & louder dimed on 10 with a lot more bottom end. Dual Showmans are arguably the most thunderously loud amp.
@JohanSegeborn
@JohanSegeborn 3 года назад
Yeah he was loud. I think he used those 180W Super Twins too
@ErnieDouglas
@ErnieDouglas 3 года назад
@@JohanSegeborn - Yes, Nugent used 180W Super Twins for a bit. He was really a non-master volume big power Fender guy before his 80's hair band era. Just like George Thoroughgood using Showmans. That's why both their classic tones are so hard to replicate as there was no pre amp knob, boost pedal or distortion pedal in sight. Just pure massive volume into making the amps fire breathing dragons where you cab hears every strings on the fret borad clearly in every chord.
