I was wrong BUT NOW it sounds like JIMI HENDRIX - UP TO SPECS Fender Showman Half Stack

I demoed a 1965 Fender Showman Half stack the other day and I t sounded great but not at as punchy and brilliant as it could. Now Daniel Forsberg has made sure everything is up to specs (basically) in the amp and then it sounds way punchier and gainer. Now it comes much closer to Jimi Hendrix early tone.
Gear:
1965 Fender Showman Amp with a
1965 Fender Showman 1x15 Tone Ring cab with a
1965 JBL D130F
1973 Fender Stratocaster miked by
2009 Peluso 2247LE and 1960s Beyerdynamic M160 room mics
No Close mics.

Johan Segeborn When I read that interview, it got me thinking about Ed's tone chase and one thing stood out right away. Ed preferred Sylvania 6CA7 "big bottle" tubes over EL34s for the quicker response they gave over the EL34. In fact, it's closer to the 6L6 in that respect - a sort of hybrid of a 6L6 and a European EL34. Yngwie prefers E34Ls over EL34s for the tighter response they provide. This makes perfect sense when you remember the higher gain & tight response of '80s hard rock & metal. It's the trademark of the JCM800. All this made me wonder if Ed tried 6CA7s in his Showman. That would be an interesting test - especially in concert with a VariAC and a vintage Marshall cab with 1221 Celestions

Eddie Van Halen's tone is a kids tone, Hendrix's tone was an adults tone. Likewise their respective musics.

This sounds great in itself, Johan, but honestly not much like Hendrix: just a good Strat through a big Fender. The sound from 4:48 starts to be more Hendrix-like, but that's because of the way you're playing - the note choices and rhythms. A lot of the time, I think people think that there's a 'Hendrix gear' sound, and it's true to a point, but much more of his sound is in his musical choices and the way that he attacks the instrument.
@JohanSegeborn

Also worth noting that to my knowledge, like Duane Allman, Jimi liked very skinny strings and they both lowered the tension on their respective guitars. Jimi tuned down a half step whilst Duane allman top-wrapped his Gibsons. So you have Jimi's very nonchalant playing with a very quick to distort kind of set up which certainly makes Jimi sound like Jimi more readily than with a very tight set up.

I've an old Silverface Twin Reverb I play through for some of Jimi's tones. While he did use Fender amps in the studio like most Guitarists he didn't limit himself to any one brand of amp. Like all of us he used what was available as well as what he liked. Great tone from this Showman and a big improvement after its check up on the repair bench. Great content Johan, thank you.

Funny I had the same reaction as Daniel Forsberg. I owned a 1964 Showman for years, and was quite surprised by the tone in your last video. Now it sounds right *and very nice*. These Showmans have a very linear OT, so they don't break up a lot, but are a great (and loud) amp and pedal platform. I usually preferred the Vibrato channel to the Normal channel personally (with the added bonus of having a middle tone control).

Wow. Your Bassman sounds awesome Johan! It sounded great before, but now it definitely has the bass and punch it was lacking in the previous demo video. And that’s with a Strat with single coils! I bet it is very flexible tone-wise and has a lot more headroom now. Mr. Forsberg definitely put the voodoo into it and made it sing! I bet if you wanted to you could put the right fuzz pedal in front of it with a wah or uni-vibe, to really bring out those Hendrix tones. Wishing you and your family healthy and happy holidays Johan! That goes for Daniel and the rest of your subscribers as well. Have a very Merry Christmas! 🎄 Rock and Roll 🎸🤘🏻

run .010, .013, .015, .026, .032 and .038. strings when you want to get a closer tone to Jimi. The smaller 3rd string is the " ah ha " factor. Also , having a lighter bottom end with the A and E strings is not something were used to hearing in the string sets marketed to us today. It rounds/balances out the sound nicely. I really enjoy the videos you make. Thanks for sharing with us.

Have you played Bass through that yet? You can find twin reverbs for pretty cheap these day since everyone want the little amps, they sound great with new baffle and a single 15". I always wondered what the tone ring does different compared to a closed or open back (future video perhaps?), and why Fender stopped using them. They are such a cool design. I have a 1x12 tone ring with my '61 bandmaster, but I haven't gotten to check it out because I'm still in the middle of restoring that amp.

@JohanSegeborn 3 года назад
No not yet. But I bet that sounds great. Check out the tone ring design in this thread surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/5161/?page=1#p69509 I think the purpose was to get more bass out of the cab without pushing the speaker too fast which used to blow otherwise. Cheers

@@JohanSegeborn Neil Young's tech Larry Cragg swears by the 1x15 tone-rings and 135 watt fenders for bass. The Alembic preamps used for bass but also by David Gilmour for guitar are basically a showman preamp so the DNA is there for a good all around amp for guitar or bass.

Nothing like Hendrix tone. No blooming interactive 3D tone around the lower mids blending seamlessly into crispy but warm upper harmonics. The showman is too stiff and clean in all the wrong places for Jimi's tone. Yes Jimi very occasionally used similar fender amps to this one but it was hardly his signature sound and there is a good reason why he fell in love with Marshall amps and was happy with them enough to never bother with fender amps unless he had to or on very rare occasions used them for a change in tone. I can't see what the point of this experiment is, except that it is usually misunderstood how jimi used his Marshalls and how they were set up, slightly modded and biased to his taste. Post Van Halen and ACDC, most people haven't got a clue how to get those classic old school tones of Hendrix, Page and, Kossoff, but especially Hendrix.
@dekal517
@dekal517 3 года назад
Just proof that Jimi could have gotten his tone out of a first-act. Wasn't til 4:45 that you started playing his techniques and style that it sounded like Jimi. Throw a fuzz, univibe, wah and use Jimi's techniques on most amps and it will sound good. Playing like Buddy Holly on Jimi Hendrix's actual rig will make you sound like Buddy Holly.
