I don't get how anyone would think any of these other then the OG color can replace the analogue pocket. The difference is emulation vs fpga. I'm sure they are fun to play, but it's not the same at all.
@@GogitoGTHD yeah, but the analogue will have a better screen. Also, retroid has horrible buttons and bloat, still the retroid pocket is very good though.
How is it that no one has mentioned that all these handhelds are just emulation machines. The Analogue Pocket plays original cartridges like its on original hardware. Perks are the hdmi dock and usb slots for controllers. With the PC Engine cartridge adapter announced we are looking at a more affordable way to play non-emulated retro games, including shmups.
My only problem with these AP killers is that none of them are actually what the Analogue Pocket is, which is hardware emulation. Aside from Modded GBs and the GB Boy Colour which are actual hardware and hw clone, the rest are software emulation. Also note that with future adapters AP will also be able to play NGP, GG, and I think other handheld games (lynx?) so the thing at the beginning of the video about it only being able to play gameboy cartridges is a bit misleading. The price point isn't my biggest issue with the Analogue Pocket, but rather the availability. Preorders sold out pretty quickly, and although I was signed up to their newsletter, I and some others were never informed of the preorders opening and I was not able to grab one. It appears they are working on making more available as soon as possible so hopefully they will actually inform people properly this time (I'm watching their social media this time around with notifications). With that said, the original intent with the AP as far as I'm aware was that it is supposed to be a limited run. If that is still true that's an even bigger availability issue as people interested and not concerned about the price point won't be able to actually get it unless they want to spend 3x+ times the money on ebay (people already want upwards of 1500$ for the preorder on ebay).
What makes any of these AP killers is you can play the same games, with good screens and the emulation is good, you're not going to notice a difference. But you're right in saying the people that want to buy the AP are buying it for the fact that it is hardware emulation, and those aren't people this video is directed at. It's for the person that just wants to play GB games on the go on a modern device with a backlit screen.
Daniel, I agree 100% with you. What Analogue is selling is no input lag, no screen tearing, perfect integer scaling, correct FPS, etc. I have a lot of software emulation handheld systems and not even one has all these features. A lot of games are unplayable. Also what I like about the AP is the focus on portable systems: I ‘m personally not interested in playing games that were designed for big TVs on small screen portable systems.
Let's be honest. The Analogue products are for people who still OWN the original physical games. Purists can buy those overpriced devices for perfect experience but for others, chinese consoles are all they need to play retro games they never had the chance to play. I still wonder how Analogue hasn't been prosecuted by Nintendo since FPGA is much closer to hardware reproduction than true software emulation.
@@mariorossi9944 yes I use n64oid as my emulator and that runs smoothly on there. With certain configurations mupen works just as well if not better for a lot of people. I just like the easiness of n64oid
I love and respect emulation systems. But ever since going fpga (I have a MiSTer) and originals (on a crt or with proper scaling on an lcd), I've struggled with emulation. I hate to say it, but I can't see an emulator 'killing' an fpga system. However... I've modded a ps vita which is super for many emulators while natively/flawlessly running ps1, psp and ps vita. Great screen and ergonomics.
Yep between Retro Dodo, Taki, ETA Prime, I feel like I would be a total idiot if I don't get one of the Retro Pocket 2 handhelds...lol! It is killing it in the reviews.
First, great video! The "Retroid Pocket" looks really nice! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think one of the main USPs is the analogue pocket (and their other consoles) doesn't use emulation but native FPGAs instead. Especially for speed runners this can be a crucial thing if they need to be frame perfect. This could also justify the higher price. I think for most of the users it doesn't really matter if the games are emulated or run natively. PS: It's called "et cetera" not "e xetera" xD
Just out of curiosity how long has everyone had to wait for their retroid pocket 2 ? I ordered mine in mid September and the customer service rep told me it won’t ship till November !!
You could easily modify a GBC yourself with a good modern backlit display. I personally would just buy a psp/psvita modded and emulate through that honestly. (BTW I have all of the above cus I've kept my childhood consoles)
I don’t want it to sound like I’m saying any of these are particularly bad, but I just don’t think they’re appealing to the same market that the Analogue Pocket is trying to appeal to. That being hardcore retro/nintendo fans looking for the absolute best way to play real cartridges in modern times. Like yeah, it only plays GB games + other handheld games through adapters, but that’s because the audience it’s marketed towards would rather play console games... on console! Either with an FPGA solution, or RGB with upscalers, etc. Plus, it gives the ability to play the games on a TV or monitor with a dock, and until it comes out and comparisons are made we can’t be sure, but I have high hopes that it will be the best way to play a lot of these games on the big screen, over the Super Gameboy 2 or the Gameboy adapter for gamecube.
@@jjaze9831 yea the retroid pocket 2 is the best handheld emulator, if only the Moto gamepad mod was made in mass that and a Moto 4 could cost like $120 and be amazing but so few of the gamepad mod they are like $80 used
Couldn't get my hands on a preorder because of bots and scalpers so I got a retroid pocket 2 and I loved it so much I picked up a second one for my wife so we can do multi-player. Analog pocket is cool in theory but it's too expensive for what it is, its not even available because of scalpers and I'm almost 99% certain this is intended by Analogue. My order literally sat in a loading screen and by the time I was able to submit it was sold out. Literally seconds later it was already available on eBay. That's just too much of a coincidence if you ask me.
Much as I like the look of the Retroid Pocket I really don't like the idea of having an Android based device for this so I'm going to have to wait it out for the RG351.
It's not expensive for the quality. It's made for players who want an accuracy and the best experience using original cartridges. If someone doesn't want that, there are many interesting choices as well.
Piboy DMG for myself. I'm always wary of cheap chinese handhelds particularly from an aftermarket support perspective. The support network of the Pi community is a big plus and, who knows, if the Pi 5 doesn't mess with the position of the ports much, there may be upgrade potential later down the line.
By now, RP2 had a higher scored at overall, while I prefer more powerful bad boy can putting into pocket. PiBoy is good option for me .. BUT, the damn awful shipping cost is 50USD
The analogue pocket is in my opinion one of the best looking handheld consoles I have ever seen, but the pricing is putting it out of reach for many especially if looking at it on a price to features ratio. Makes those already fantastic alternatives even more appealing, but the analogue pocket is gorgeous!!!
Nice! When did you order yours? I place my order on the 28th of august and haven’t received any shipping updates yet. Hoping it’s not part of the second patch that’s being shipped late September.
Thanks for the deep dive into these handhelds. I picked up an Analogue pocket but am interested in something I can use now so timely video. But I've got some questions: 1) In your estimation, when will you post a review of the Moqi i7s? 2) Do you have any concerns connecting this to your home/work network, popping a SIM in it, logging into key apps with it (e.g.: Google account etc.)?
If anyone is in a under 100 dollar budget and want to play N64, Dreamcast, and DS etc, then the Retroid Pocket 2 is perfect! I just ordered mine and I can’t wait!
Is the fan on the piboy loud? Let's say I was in a room in my university studying and wanted to make a break. Would the fan be loud enough to bother other people?
I've been watching many many videos on this system. Primarily because it is taking the retro gaming community by storm. Bottom line no one is talking about that issue. Let's be very clear about one thing though. To keep the clearance low (for reaching the ABXY buttons) the right side "analog" stick is actually one of the slider types. No big deal if you know that but don't think it has two true analog type sticks. The left side is a true analog and sticks up more. For 90% of the retro games it can play this is a non issue. It could be annoying if you are playing a game that uses both constantly however. For most of us that slider stick will be the four yellow buttons mapped on the N64. Like camera changes for many of the N64 games....so no big issue.
Hello, like most Powkiddys, Play Store don't work. I got the x15 model (good android open source) and I found an app that replaces it well. It's Aurora Store, but it doesn't seem to use the function "Google play service". While a lot of games require this addon. Do you know another apps for better quality?
I have a modded Switch with retroarch and I think it's the best handheld device you could have BUT it is too big and expensive to take everywhere, like to work daily. For that I just bought the Bittboy pocketgo v1 as it appears to be the smallest competent handheld. The RK20 seemed like maybe it's similar in size but has jabk quality. I'll be keeping an eye on your channel for more truly pocket sized alternatives and hopefully one will come this year that can play Playstation games.
I don't know why the GPD XD Plus is not on here. I would add that and recommend that as well. It's an android tablet with a nintendo ds shell. The device is not perfect but is pretty solid.
The Retroid Pocket 2 being on Android is the best thing about it and the worst thing about it. Keep in mind it doesn't have a touch screen which makes getting around the OS and setting emulators up quite frustrating at times. You have the ability to turn an analog stick into a cursor, but its clunky and switching modes feels like a chore. This video really hypes the Pocket 2 up and while great, I don't think its ideal unless you enjoy the tinkering aspect of emulators and retro consoles. Even then, I'd recommend watching a video of someone using it outside of gameplay.
Wouldn't it be possible to use RP 2 only with the retroid pocket application without having to have the android system installed? I want to use the console only to play retro games without having to use netplay wifi or other android options.
retroid pocket 2 is good, but I don't like the design especially the position of d-pad above the left analog stick and the right analog stick is low profile (I prefer symmetrical)
why has no working prototype of the Analogue Pocket been shown yet? It was supposed to release late 2020, then march 2021, now october 2021, when is the next delay and BS excuse email
The GB Boy Colour really interests me. Is Allie Express a safe place to buy things from and how long does delivery normally take? Awesome vdieo as always
Gameboy Color has an Infrared Sensor... I dont know what games support it though... Or why Nintendo thought it needed one... and why Gameboy Advance never had it.
Hiii, great video. I was really interested of getting the rg300. However you said it was 40 dollars and I can only find it at 55+. Is this a mistake? If that’s the case I’m thinking of investing a little more in something better
@@ZacharyShindle1-933 All Retroid Pocket 2 shipped out before October, will be able to receive the 8.1 update. And I believe all RP2 shipped after October, will already have Android 8.1 installed. So anyone worried of not getting the 8.1 update, because of buying early. Fear not, early adopters will be able to get that update as well.
Not sure if this video is just click-bait or ignorance or both. Claiming cheap ARM-based emulation is a “killer” of a quality FPGA handheld is just ridiculous. Also, the Pocket plays more than “only Gameboy cartridges” out-of-the-box and has an open development platform for additional adapters and cores. I own a few of these systems and they aren’t even in the same league.
i love my moqi i7s can play all my emulators on it and cod mobile :) i have all these devices..and more next week i go in a vacation..the one i will take with me will be the moqi and a nintendo switch
Lol these Chinese knockoffs are hardly an Analogue FPGA killer but they do look fun enough for the $. Pocket however is gonna be another level in quality that we have not seen yet in the retro portable space.
ill take my hacked n3dsxl with retroarch any day, on top of the systems included in retroarch (i also have snes9x, daedalusx64, etc) you also havr the amazing 3ds/ds library
I bought 2 too xD Blue and the new RS2 (ps theme) color. .... one for me and my brother cuz of the multiplayer feature xD. Colors Blue and the new RS2 (ps theme) color. .We both 30ish and men we miss good old retro gaming battles. Topgear3000, TEKKEN, Smash bros... Can't wait to get them ship and install Metroid, Killer instinct, Yugioh for PS1 and all those good old games.
I would like you to talk more about latency. Which ones are faster? Measure it etc. How big a difference is it between the ones doing emulation in linux, android or no emulation. You never talk about it.
