one of Australia's best pub band. I remember rocking up to a pub in the 90's, going in to see the angles playing away. This was when everyone knew them and they could sell out anywhere. They never forgot their roots.

Doc was a bundle of energy on stage and a prolific climber. He'd climb speaker stacks, lighting rigs, a stage manager's nightmare, but a brilliant frontman.

Hi Guys. I live in Sydney and recently saw a young Aussie cover band playing The Angels . . the were unbelievable! . . I walked into an RSL club and heard The Angels song 'Marseilles' playing in the background. Thinking is was just background music, a friend said come and have a look in the auditorium - there they were exact replicas and sounding exactly the same. We danced all night and I did my knee towards the end.

Rick Brewster (guitar) once said in an interview that he "learned early on to stand absolutely still on stage because I had no idea where Doc was going to go. Neither did Doc." Other Angels track worth checking out - "Who Rings The Bell," "I Ain't The One," "Mr Damage," "Beyond Salvation,." If going with live videos then I recommend the shows from the 70's & 80's when the band was fully firing, young, passionate, hungry.

I shouldn't tell you this... but in 1981, the Angels played the Uni bar in Tassie. I went along... and a 'friend' who was 5 foot couldn't see the stage. I put her on my shoulders and we both watched the Angels!. 40 years later, we reunited. But 41 years later, we saw The Angels at The Longley International Hotel in Southern Tasmania... and I got a 'naughty' that I enjoyed 40 years ago!!! Thank you Angels!!!!! That was awesome!!!

The full tilt banger from The Angels was Take A Long Line. Also noteworthy were: No Secrets Shadow Boxer Marseille Comin’ Down Look The Other Way Between The Eyes Sticky Little Bitch and they did a pretty good cover of The Animals’ We’ve Gotta Get Out Of This Place. As for After The Rain (which is my second favourite of theirs), it was apparently about the Holocaust, referencing it in lines like “Who took the gold from their teeth? Who takes the ancient masterpiece?” and “Who knows who’s star has fallen?” a reference to the Star Of David. Although some of their lyrics were simple, there were often much deeper and more interesting concepts in there for the fans who were able to look beyond the awesome power of the rhythm section.

George and Alex, thanks for playing another classic Angels song. The next 5 songs of theirs, in no particular order, could be Marseille, No Secrets, Fashion and Fame, Shadow Boxer & Long Line. I promise not to mention the band that starts with a W. Really. Doc was a doing acting at Uni, so all that came through in his performance. No lip synching so you could get the dance steps right, either.

They had to bring their 13 year old sisters, who were refused entry so they left them outside for 4 hours in the middle of a Canberra winter! Apart from that my main memory is Doc throwing a jug of iced water on me. In those days they would cram up to 2000 people in there. That changed in the 90's when the fire regs came in and capacity was reduced to under 1000!

His entrance MAY have been chemically assisted. THis is a later line-up, minus one Brewster brother/guitarist. This is also Jim Hilbun, an American bass player. I idolised him as a teenager and actually met him once at a friends gig backstage. (my friend was in Rose Tattoo and wrote their best album). And once again, a great lyricist, who was a trained school English Teacher, like Sting and Mark Knopfler.

Narara was 83, still John on rhythm, he didn't leave until 85.

@@TheThamesmen I was lucky enough to speak with Doc on a couple of occasions and he was very articulate and incredibly intelligent. There’s a great documentary on the Angels currently doing the rounds on the Foxtel Documentary Channel here in Australia.
