Did you know that elephants were used by the enemy in the Vietnam war? I didn’t. To be honest they seem like a logistical nightmare but I’m also not an elephant tamer so who knows?

When my husband went to the wall, he met a sobbing veteran holding a collar. He told my husband a story about how his platoon found a puppy in Vietnam, and it became part of the platoon. It saved their lives multiple times and became their mascot/good luck charm. He had made arrangements to take the dog home, but about a week out of leaving the dog got hurt by a landmine, too hurt to save, and he had to put him down. Now, all those years later, he was there to put the make shift collar at the wall so he could hopefully leave the dog's spirit there with his lost buddies. (I'm telling the story horribly, but this is third hand.) My husband and I were both sobbing as he related the story to me. I seem to recall the dog's name was either Patton or Teddy.

Yeah, most if that was bullshit to dehumanize the Taliban, kinda redundant as all you need to do is look up what they actually do to hate them.

My Pops German Shepherd was named Brutus. Beautiful, loyal, an absolute beast; saved his life more than once. I still leave a flower for him on Pop’s grave.

Being a Tunnel Rat was a traumatic job for soldiers. Necessary, but extremely dangerous. Can’t even imagine. Tiger attacks were never even considered! What a nightmare. Male elephants in musth (unsure of spelling) would be like juggling with nitroglycerin.
@LMVG2233
@LMVG2233 3 месяца назад
Your spelling of musth is correct! Male elephants annually experience the musth period, which typically lasts between two and three months. Such elephants are highly aggressive and should be avoided.

During the US Civil War "seeing the elephant" was a common euphemism for experiencing or going into battle. I guess the Vietnamese took that a little more literally.

I wondered about the etymology of the saying. Our Battalion Commander said we had seen the elephant. Had forgotten it until your comment.

I do wonder what's worse. I've tried being charged by a grumpy African elephant mister in musting season, but I've not been in any military exchanges of fire in the Vietnamese countryside. What I can say for sure though, I get why elephants make fucking terrifying war beasts.

"Even when it's purpose-built, it's still a piece of garbage" Which cannot be said about the elephants. They might get a little difficult to work with, but they are highly effective animals

theres also a little known fact, that a green beret squad conducting an op in Cambodia during the war, encountered what they described as a 'giant ape' like person in a tree throwing rocks at them. apparently they fired on the creature and it kept throwing rocks at them. supposedly they submitted a formal after action report about it
@boringdude1626
@boringdude1626 3 месяца назад
This was very common both in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. They are called rock apes and at FOB-4 teams could go hunting them at monkey mountain if the yards were hungry. Sometimes rock apes would stalk teams in the field.

Hey brother, I don't know if you'd want to open this box of foil publicly......😂 Check out some of the spec ops encounters with "orangutans", that "don't" live in Vietnam.... There are some very humble men, who if they told me the sky was going to fall, I'd buy a Kevlar umbrella, that gave some good accounts of orangutans...or whatever.
