Hong Kong was mostly a small fishing community before becoming the "Pearl of the Orient". The last jewel in the crown of the British Empire, Hong Kong became a massive financial and trade centre between the 50s and 80s. Hong Kong is now a Special Administrative Region of China, and will remain so until 2047. Find out how this baron rocky area became catapulted to world prominence.

Alan Tan Also. Just remember the Mao once says that the party will not give up it’s power without a war ( or something like that). And that could be easily seen during the Tiananmen Square protests , which the peaceful Chinese protesters get crushed by tanks and shot by machine guns by the “ People’s Libration Army” which should protect its people

Funny how the history of Hong Kong is simplified to “Brits took over and Hong Kong the fishing village had education, housing, development… etc” Much of the glumly history of British rule is just ignored. Hong Kong people only started to have those rights after a leftist rebellion in the late 60’s. The video seems to convey the Brits did everything from ground up, there was nothing beforehand, and nothing came from China. Why didn’t the video mention after the sino-British agreement that the British government began to privatise all public services, began the high land-prices policy, and implemented sudden and hasty measures of democratisations. All these factors directly contributed to the current mess in HK. So biased and ill-informed.

Yes it wasnt under British rule..... In 1993 their gdp was 27% of all of China. So the HK people faced second third class status..... ask any HK person what matters..... JOBS and money. 1:36 The opium trade, which should have been mentioned, was the issues that led to the Opium Wars. The mass introduction of opium from the British East India Company (BEIC) was illegal according to Qing law, but was still accepted by Chinese merchants due to it being a lucrative trade product despite it being an illicit and illegal drug. The thing about BEIC opium was that it was better quality than domestic versions and became highly prized. This led to Qing officials to begin taking action and they confiscated the opium found that British merchants were importing and burned it all. British merchants were able to lobby their government to get compensation (opium is also illegal in Britain, so this was very hypocritical) and the British sent their navy and after failed negotiations, war occurred. The rest of course is history. 4:38 Most likely, Hong Kong will have a similar fate as Shanghai or Tianjin and become some form of municipality region that has direct control from the central government.

It wasn’t illegal in Britain. Licensed chemists could sell as much as they liked. There were opium dens in London were you could buy an evenings enjoyment . @anqiren5345
@anqiren5345 5 лет назад
This is addressed to all you 'suppressed' 'Hong Kong'ers in the comment section. I see one of you argue that Hong Kong has its own 'culture'? Even 'language'? My goodness me, do you not all speak Cantonese, a CHINESE dialect? You may argue that 'oh yeah but we speak our former masters' language too', but English is schooled pretty much all over the world, so that is not even a point. And, what amazes me the most is that you want your 'democracy' back. Wow, that IS a new one, democracy in a DEPENDENT colony under enlightened British rule, which after various bloody rebellions finally gave Ireland 'home rule', and keeps Northern Ireland till this day, the 'independent' Canada must swear loyalty to the British royal house, and is obliged to join into every British war, ANZACS, colonial troops from Australia and New Zealand, also British colonies, were used as cannon fodder by their British commanders. Are you stupid or brainwashed enough, that you had 'democracy' under GB? Were the elections then not 'rigged'? And, and, for those arguing that China is 'meddling in Hong Kong affairs'? Actually, that is very true. In fact, you should all remember the black day when China first 'intervened in Hong Kong affairs', using money from national reserves to SAVE your little city from going bankrupt in the 1997 economic crisis caused by Soros. Thailand got totaled in that event, Philippines, basically every nation in Southeast Asia, but he was stopped at Hong Kong. Why? Because China 'meddled in your affairs' and prevented him from screwing up your economy, countered his moves with RMB, and you all get to keep your houses, cars and buy food. That is some serious meddling right there, should not have done that, China. Should have let Hong Kong go bankrupt so after twenty years, when you are begging on the streets instead of protesting on RU-vid, you won't be much 'freedom-driven' then, and will beg for being allowed to be a part of China, well besides for food of course. Seriously, if you like 'democracy' and colonialism so much, buy a ticket to England and go serve your former colonial masters there. You will not be suppressed and have a model democratic system there, I am sure of it. Well, when you are cleaning floors and changing diapers, you will have an elected leader who is just as obedient and submissive as the rest of you. Good news for Englishmen, bully for Great Britain.

@Vyrkhan

The Chinese gov is in crisis, the economic boom is no more and they are now expose to many critics by foreign governments. Also the economic war with the US, the incoming war with India (which has many and more powerful allies than China) and their extreme practices of a typical dictatorship state is not helpful. Don’t forget that political rivals are using the Covid origin in China as an excuse to criticize the Chinese gov. So they can’t spend anymore time or resources in solve the political crisis in Hong Kong. If they can by force put them under control then they will do it.

The Chinese government is tired of western saboteurs entering HK freely, especially after the extradition bill incident, the government has had enough and decided not to tolerate it anymore. So does most of the Chinese citizens, they also had enough of those racist assault from Hongkongers.

Even if they were still ruled by the British, Hong Kong's main problems are systemic and do not stem from China's authoritarianism. China's rapid globalization meant that Hong Kong lost much of its trading power in the region, and they won't be able to regain it simply by becoming British again. Valid analogies would be to compare Hong Kong to the whaling settlements in New England or the fur trading forts along the Hudson's Bay or the sugarcane colonies in the Caribbean. The times have changed and they can't go back.

How is it over there during covid and the protests?
@notschniz2365
@notschniz2365 3 года назад
Well great job, but you missed a whole bunch of stuff. 2003 SARS which HK took really badly, the leader of the Chinese revolution against the dynasty was set up in Hong Kong periodically, and you mentioned to rapid industrialization, but not the change from factories to pretty much only finance and business, becuase even in 2001 the tertiary industry was already 85.6% of the GDP in HK, with the rest being the secondary industry, unless you want to count the 0.1% GDP taken by the primary industry. And that change just never stopped. Also, I don't know if the major amount of protest happened yet when you made this video, but a bunch of protests happens as the protesters claim HK was being taken over by China by a few laws implemented. And then covid came, which you wouldn't have known. Anyway, great video, just mentioning a few things you missed.
