Film composer, arranger, producer and performer, Anne Dudley is a multi-talented and critically acclaimed musician. This interview was originally recorded for Niles’ BBC Radio 2 documentary, “Richard Niles’ History of Pop Arranging”.
Beginning as a session musician and arranger for Producer Trevor Horn she worked with him on hits for ABC, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and Malcolm McClaren. She was a founding member of the Art of Noise whose hits included Close to the Edit, The Seduction of Claude Debussy, and Kiss featuring Tom Jones. In conversation with composer Richard Niles she discusses all this and more.
She has composed and produced soundtracks for dozens of award-winning films and television shows.

Anne Dudley is simply amazing! I like her arrangements very much. Getting Away With It is great. She did an awesome job on arranging some tracks for the Pet Shop Boys when they played at the Mermaid Theatre.

"Getting Away With It" was HUGE!!! One of my favourite tracks ever, even my 10 yo daughter loves it, she sings it and requests it to be played quite a lot... and we love the strings at the end after the track fades out, she is entranced when she hears them.

Wow. I became a massive Art of Noise fan in 1992 and The Smiths (including Johnny Marr) in 1993. I never knew there was this connection between Anne Dudley and Johnny Marr on Getting Away With It, which is one of my favourite ever songs.

I came to look and listen into this interview,in a curious way.First,i checked and listened to Prince his song "It"(from the Sign o the Times album) and find out,most tracks in this song were recorded and made with a CMI Fairlight sample computer and a Linn drummachine.The string sound is a so typical 80 ties Sound,so i start searching to artists and bands,who also used this eighties string sample.Started looking into Art of Noise video's at YT,which are still a cult band,like Kraftwerk. Than i found this interview, that i appriciate very much,because of all the annecdotes,the humble and very intelligent Anne Dudley.And Anne tells about the recordings with Tom Jones on "Kiss":Prince was a kind of pissed on this cover and hit.He wasn't asked,if he was okay with this cover version,still he owned a lot of bonus income with this. So i presume Prince had also heard bands like the Art of Noise,to use it in his own music.

I had a few FGTH bootlegs back in the day and they were actually a decent band. They did a better live version of Born To Run than Springsteen did!

I am glad Anne defended the Frankies. If you listen to their demos it's almost all there already the production added emphasis it didn't invent the tracks.

I disagree about British or anywhere music not being particularly exciting now. It is. It's just not mainstream or in any kind of chart. The music industry as it was is dead. But musically it's a very exciting time because anything goes on bandcamp, soundcloud etc. Creators have tech that make the Fairlight look very quaint and you can carry it all in a small bag and set it up and perform anywhere. Big biz can't control that so they don't promote it.
