The Annual Drunken, Deadly Horse Races of Guatemala

Every year at the end of October, the Mayan villagers in Todos Santos, Guatemala, throw a week-long rager to celebrate their independence. After days of drinking and dancing and barely sleeping, the bravest men in town face off against each other in a wild, wasted horse race.
It's not uncommon to see a drunk rider fly off his saddle and land on his neck, or to watch someone get trampled by another racer's horse. Most years at least one villager dies in the race. But after the Mayan townspeople have suffered through centuries of genocide by the Spanish and their government, dying drunk and free on the back of a horse isn't the worst way to go. At least it's on their terms.

Holy crap I can't believe Vice came to Todos Santos on October. That's my parents birth town. I've visited family in Todos Santos and have witnessed the horse races myself and yes I've seen people fall off horses going 50mph on rough dirt, terrain. Todos Santos is no joke when it comes to binge drinking during the holidays lol. I have more pride now being a Todos Santero knowing that even through dark times, we should celebrate having survived the worst and to work harder as a result. My grandparents were a victim to this genocide and having studied the history of the U.S. during the late 70's, I dislike Reagan who funded the corrupt Guatemalan government at the time who then committed mass genocide on my people. It pains me sometimes to know that my citizenship here in the U.S. would not have been possible if the U.S. hadn't of gotten involved in Guatemala and funded the deaths of millions of mayans, including my grandfather. This is what drives me to work hard and take every possible chance to succeed here. Thank you Vice for visiting and informing viewers of a place that has little to no recognition.

I am sorry that, that happened to your grandparents. I was wondering if you could help me a bit? I am actually doing a presentation on this very tradition and I was just wondering what foods and drinks you make for this tradition.

River, you did a very good job on this piece. The main story was the horse race; however, the impressive part about your report is how the tradition came about, including the Spanish conquest of Maya peoples in this region, as well as the struggles of the villagers against their own government. You were a good sport for staying true to the tradition, dressing up in full costume, and showing respect for the traditions of the villagers. Good job.

Lots of family members and organizations gather up secondhand clothing in the states and send it out to smaller countries, where people are in need of clothes. Growing up, my mother would always send clothes that no longer fit my brothers and I out to our family in Guatemala and they would pass it on to families that just couldn't afford to dress their family. For example, I know someone out there in Guatemala is sporting a Navy Seals hoodie my cousin got rid of a few years ago but that someone has no idea what that hoodie represents (:
