This past spring I attended the FRC North Carolina State Championships and got to talk to a bunch of the teams. If you've never heard of FIRST Robotics, you're in for a real treat, because this competition is AWESOME.
These teams, thousands of them, have only about 2 months to design, build, and test robots to play a brand new game before the competitions begin, and then their work is put to the test! It would be a lot for any professional engineer, but these kids are still in high school! It's pretty incredible.

@@paulmakesthings There is a 15 second period at the start of each match when the robots are fully autonomous (and all the points are worth a lot more), and then even when drivers take control, many teams program in autonomous behavior that assists the human drivers, like automatically aiming at the goal.

There are a quite a few FIRST alumni in all sorts of companies. Id be more surprised if there was an engineering/manufacturing company in the US that does not have some connection with the FIRST organization.

I'm a FIRST alumni and went to world championships twice. I can safely say that FIRST has shaped many people in ways that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. It is one of the greatest learning opportunities I've ever had.

@@forget2bhuman993 that’s not even relevant to this conversation. There are many scholarships and grant opportunities for FIRST students. What’s great about FIRST and what cvoges12 is getting at is that the education you get in the FIRST programs is one of the most valuable education experiences due to the level of access to the program, skills learned, and networking opportunity. I’d say it’s almost more valuable than higher ed. while also recognizing higher ed. has its place.

Ah yes, FRC, the competition where I slept under a metal table in our booth between matches because I was so sleep deprived from helping put out metaphorical (or at least mostly metaphorical) fires over the preceding week and a half. The same metal table that me and another person accidentally welded while discussing how to best mount the battery on the robot just a few nights before (protip: don't touch the leads of a live battery to something that you don't want to pass current through, like a metal table). I have a lot of vivid memories of the whole ordeal, even after a decade. I definitely recommend anybody interested in robotics, or any of the skills involved, give FRC a try.

I was only in FLL as a middle schooler but the stress is real. its INSANE what us kids go though. we really shouldn't be putting that kind of stress on ourselves lol. we had no life when we were in FLL. But the rush of something working stays with you for a while im a software engineer now and i wish I had been able to dd FRC. that team who had never coded before... _I_ dont know if I could do that and im 3 years out of college lol

@@pvic6959 Oh, the coding was actually kinda easy (I was one of the 2 programmers on our team, both with effectively 0 experience); FIRST provided some graphical coding thing where you wire together squares that ran functions, and they provided premade code, like the controls for the mecanum wheels. The other programmer and I did very little programming when all was said and done (well, I did spend a week staring at squares and lines to figure out what the code was doing and fix an issue we had with one of the supplied programs). EDIT: all the time I spent not coding was instead spent doing wiring or helping out whoever needed an extra pair of hands.

@@bozo7893 I definitely wouldn't call them a monster. They didn't force us to crunch or anything like that, but they were there for us when we would stay up working till 2am when we found a mistake we needed to fix. Hell, they even gave me a ride home a few times during those nights. I really appreciate them and the guidance they provided.

I was in in FLL in middle school!! But i didnt have time for FTC/FRC when i started high school. 720: me too, back in my day 3d printers were just a concept people had heard about. it want until i started college when they started going main stream. and now... any maker can have one if they want lol

My sisters High School team had to build one that shot frisbees into a thing. I helped them out a couple of times and it was pretty cool but I knew I was in over my heard since I had not taken a robotics class. It was weird for me at 21 having a bunch of 17 year old kids who were much brighter than I was boss me around.

@@AlphaPhoenixChannel those things were **dangerous**. I remember volunteering at competitions where those things found their way into the crowd repeatedly. That was the only game where FIRST made a major change to the rules _after_ build season because a test competition discovered that letting human players throw Frisbees for the last thirty seconds of the match was a complete safety hazard.

This competition was incredibly fun, and despite being a senior for it, it was also like a rookie year for much of our team. Learning to program a robot without accidentally making it tear its own climbing mechanism apart was something that has taught me a lot about programming in sensitive environments, forcing the inclusion of redundancy and caution. Anyway, Go team 287! (I still think we had the coolest climbing mechanism)

Couldn't get a great view of it on match videos - The center hooks looked like they were on a big ladder? Did it use motors or pistons to extend?

@@AlphaPhoenixChannel It used motors and belts that moved an elevator on linear bearings. To me though that wasn't the cool part, it was that we had the climb sequence fully automated, the driver just had to line up the climb and hold down a button, allowing us to make something like a 15 second traversal climb consistently (except in the first few matches). And maybe I'm a little biased as the programmer but I think the ability to use limit switches and event driven programming to prevent it from throwing itself off the bars was quite clever.

As a former electrical lead, I may be biased in saying that using limit switches hurts my heart, in certain cases. If the limit switch isn't rammed into by a mechanism, then it's fine. But at the same time, I also have learnt programming while using electrical components and realized that switches make things easier, so I guess I am biased in both cases. Heck, this coming year, I may as well be biased in all sub teams since I am team captain. Go team 2537!

@@lordorion8657 Just design a limit for the limit switch! lol Something like a rubber stopper (print with TPU if you have to make it custom) so the limit switch can be actuated, but not forced beyond its range of motion.

The best way I can explain the FRC community is to tell you about my team's rookie year. We had a lot of problems with our robot on day 1 of competition. People from 3 different teams were in our pit that day helping us fix things. A few others lent us tools and materials we didn't have. It was a blast.

Thank you for covering your story in FRC. I’m a VexU (a sub branch of VRC) competitor myself (NUKE) so it brings me joy that their is someone out there “documenting” robotics competitions like these. It would be amazing if someone could do the same for VRC/ VexU. Also, for students that may be reading this, if you are interested in STEM and don’t have a FIRST team locally I would highly recommend searching for a local VRC team and/ or creating your own. VRC tends to be a bit cheaper (smaller robots) although FRC tends to get more sponsorships from local companies.

Everyone focuses on the robots, but the real magic of FIRST Robotic is that there’s an opportunity for everyone, with all kinds of interests and skills, to participate. The teams have to raise money, market their product, present to investors, keep accounting records and lots more. It isn’t just for engineering geeks. Some teams are fully self funded, some are after school clubs, others are actual school classes. Perhaps the greatest feature is the concept of “co-opertition”, where teams are rewarded for helping other teams. As many have said, seeing the excitement in these kids is wonderful.

I actually did this for 5 years, started in 8th grade and finished my senior year of highschool. I still plan to go visit my old team when I'm back in town from college. Team 2028, Phantom Robotics. Easily the best part about my 4 years in highschool, the community during games is un-matched. The seasons are fun and challenging, and each year brings something new. My final year, our main CNC machine broke down, so we were unable to make smaller parts in house. We also had a team of ~20 students with only 2 veterans, myself included. Our team was very proud of the fact that we had as little mentor involvement as possible, even when most of the team was stuck. They were our guides, not our solutions.

Being a part of and leading a team helped me grow as a person in a million ways. I also really appreciate you spreading the word in an effort to help teams recruit. I participated in frc back in 2012. The challenge was shooting Frisbees into one of 3 slots on a wall then climbing a tower. We didn't compete in the finals but my team won an engineering design award and that trophy is still on my shelf to this day.

I will echo the comments of other old farts here and say how much I wish something like this competition had existed when I was in school. Today I design/build electric race cars so I have an outlet for my maker urges, but in high school I was limited to solo projects I could fund with meager earnings from a part time job.

This is now making me realize that these competitions have conditioned me to find mistakes in robots, and 6502 is the most annoying robot to defend because the only consistent options is either moving the opponent’s balls or confusing the lime light but the fact that they can modify it in the fly makes it a brutal combo (if they can do it quickly)

You also can't confuse the lime light! Rules prohibit intentionally confusing targeting systems like lime light that relies on retroreflector vision. You can put up a huge wall of sorts which happened a lot at the Monterey Regional where 4 teams put up huge pool noodle walls lol

I actually successfully defended a similar robot when I played. Our hanging mechanism was a large piece of... I don't even remember what it was made of, I wasn't on build team. But it was a large piece that would swing up when we hit the low bar so we could then hook on the mid bar. While it lost us more points than it gained, when we were alliance 8 going against alliance 1 in the playoffs it perfectly blocked the targeting light from the second best robot there. Meaning that I, a 100 lb robot with mechanium wheel drive, was the single best robot at defending that particular team. We were the only alliance in the playoffs to not allow the 1 seed to score 100 points.

Being in team 2478 was one of the best experiences I've ever had and even got me a varsity team letter. FRC Steamworks was super fun and the experience I've gained from it set me up for my machining career.

It has been a long time since I competed in FRC but if not for FRC I might not be designing satellites today. Something I've seen at every FRC I have been at or seen covered in video. The students that have done some real work on the robots speak as if they have already graduated with a degree and are going off to their first engineering job. They speak with confidence about their thousands of lines of code and the mechanisms they have designed and put together.

I really love seeing this. while my highschool didn't have to budget, or chose not to spend it on our robotics team, to compete in frc, I loved the three years that I spent with some of my closest friends competing in vrc (vex robotics competition) and I really appreciate the attention being brought to the topic so that more kids will hopefully get into their high school or local community's vrc or frc team

I was on team 308 from Commerce Twp. Michigan from 2011-2014. FIRST Robotics made me into the engineer I am today. Not only do you learn so much about science, technology, and engineering, but you also learn tremendous soft skills like teamwork, communication, and how to manage stress and overcome adversity. Incredibly thankful for the experience and all the mentors that gave their time to help the students. You did a great job capturing this event!

This is soooo cool! I knew about First Robotics having watched some of the videos online and also witnessing one of the robots in person here in Virginia. The solutions they have come up with are ingenious and their camaraderie and enthusiasm is palpable. Extremely inspiring! I am a Master’s student in Mechanical Engineering and I have a lot to learn from these young students. Thank you for making this video.

This gives me FTC memories, even though it was only a year ago for me. I had some of the best moments in my life during high school robotics, working on the robot at 2am the morning of competition. Good times that I'll never forget.

There are more high school robotics teams in Michigan than their are football teams. Easy way to win a quick bet! (Most people are sadly unaware. One time after a school board meeting, parents and community members started gathering around our practice set up in the commons. They were very impressed and equally surprised; most didn't realize what robotics really was.)

I love the recognition that you have gave the first robotics community. I was a part of it a couple years ago before Covid and it was amazing. It was one of the best times I’ve had in high school. I was a robot inspector for several years before moving to event photography for the matches. The passion that the students exude is immense. Asking a few questions and watching them beam with pride as they describe their approach and the features of the robot.

I competed in First throughout high school and later mentored for a few years until I had moved from my hometown. Absolutely great experience for all involved and props to these kids for their ingenuity and determination because lemme tell you every year was a crunch time and a half. Nice to see some familiar team names from even a decade ago when I was participating. Thanks for a blast of nostalgia!

This brings back fond memories of staying up till 1am designing components, falling asleep on each other during competitions because of the sleep deprivation, watching your robot fall 5 feet and a gearbox accidentally tear itself it half under it’s own force and trying to fix it while being interviewed by a news paper. Wouldn’t trade it for anything

This popped up on my RU-vid feed right after Emceeing/Game Announcing for the first time at Robots @ CNE! I joined FIRST in 2017, and I'm so glad I joined. I met my best friends through this league, fell in love twice because of it, and found a home that stick with me no matter where I go. One of the things FIRST in my region has always touted is inclusivity and kindness, and as a queer disabled kid, that made a massive difference, and honestly saved my life. I'm so proud of the kids in this league.

FRC was some of the most fun I had in High School and a large part of why I pursued engineering in college. My experience even helped me land some engineering internships! The interviewers who know FRC know how intense it can be, and those who don't are always excited to learn about it. It's a very fun fast-paced and high-energy environment filled with passion. It's cool seeing that newer teams are taking full advantage of cheap 3D printing! Hopefully First Robotics continues to inspire and nurture future engineers!

I really love the concept to this event! It's almost like the space race on some level where everyone is coming up with different ideas to tackle the same issue, and I really like how it's not only teaching kids some incredibly important concepts that will be relevant to their lives, but is also probably helping actual adult builders out there with some of their technical or mechanical issues by seeing the solutions that these kids have come up with to solve their own issues! I really feel like a lot of good is being put into the world because of this one idea.

Very cool! Those kids learn enough about engineering with this that they'll easily go through college and become great engineers, which are needed in the industry. Especially the guy who learned to code just for this competition and got better than most professionals!

It's crazy how much time these guys put into the competition. Some of my friends who did this were from the team that has come first in australia 8 times in a row and consistently made it to the top of the international brackets and they put in more time into the robots than they did actual school + study. upwards of 50+ hours a week in the height of the comp. Truly amazing stuff

I competed in FIRST for several years over a decade ago, it is a phenomenal program. They also have junior leagues for elementary age teams, I founded and coached one of those teams my senior year of high school. It is such a great way to teach teamwork and problem solving.

One thing I love about FIRST Robotics is the whole problem solving aspect of it, there's no kits for robots, other than the chassis or for example, the Climber-In-A-Box, I find the challenge of trying to create systems that can complete objectives effectively, but small enough to fit within the strict sizing rules

I've done FRC throughout high school, and I would recommend it to anyone. You learn a lot from experienced students, teachers, and mentors from the professional scene, and it's really rewarding to make new relationships and put knowledge to work yourself.
