The Anti-Tank Machine Gun

It seems like tank cannons always increase their effectiveness by becoming larger and more powerful, but this isn't a universal constant. In the 1970s, the United States Army sought to create what they called an "Anti-Tank Machine Gun", a very large autocannon that would fire fast enough to defeat waves of Soviet tanks. The program was relatively successful and was pursued into the mid 80s. The 75mm XM274 medium caliber anti-armor automatic cannon (MCAAC) was mounted on a variety of vehicles such as the RDF/LT and HSTV--L. It was quite powerful, but ultimately canned for a number of good reasons.

The HIMAG is honestly more interesting than the HSTVL because it could fire faster and the latest version had a radar that gave the gunner the capability to select targets and the gun would engage them without direct input. "it can't bust bunkers" well yea what did you expect it's still a 75. @primachpepe8597
@primachpepe8597 2 года назад
i will be honest, i dont think this weapon is obsolete. For its intended purpose, it would probably be fine, with the possibility of even being up gunned to a 90mm. We have to remember that most the west knows on soviet armour was speculation. Having a fast, fast firing almost tankette that can run circles around opponents would be one hell of a weapon. Couple that with high elevation & good depression, it could serve really well as a multirole vehicle The issue is the army is trying to fit everything into one package, which i understand from a logistical standpoint (that why you have the MBT concept in the first place) but such things only apply to certain scenarios. Look at the South African defence force and the Rooikat & other wheeled vehicles, which were made with the conditions of the region they would be fielded in. We did still have MBT's (modified chieftains or centurions, i forget which) but the operational capacity they could serve was severely limited.

There is a table top game called WWIII:Team Yankee by Battlefront games that takes place in the 1980s and has the Ares gun system called the RDF/LT (Rapid Deployment Force/ Light Tank) and it is pretty great if used properly, put it in a concealed position and it will wreak BMPs, T-55s and while not a guaranteed killer against the front of T-64s and T-72s gives them something to worry about. Against T-80s and T72Bs it needs a side shot to do anything, but that’s what other units either TOWs, Hellfires, or 120mm main gun tanks are for.

Quick-firing 57mm autocannon is easily capable of rendering ANY modern MBT mobility/mission kill. You don't need to penetrate armor into compartment. Most of the time it is enough to destroy main armament (tank cannon) and rip tracks. When firing from any other angle than front, even 30mm autocannons are very dangerous for tanks like Leopard2 or Abrams. If you combine such vehicle carrying 57mm autocannon with anti-tank missiles, you have anti-armor beast. 75mm cannon is even more potent, BUT at some point you run into capacity issues. With larger rounds carried capacity (and reloading speed) goes down. 40-57mm rounds have roughly the best capacity/performance ratio.

Not at all. The only reason the GAU-8 was even relevant is from a top down approach at close range. Something that in modern times would see an A-10 obliterated. Besides, the round actually sucks and wouldn't even hurt modern MBTs.

Well, IDK about 75 mm as a gun size, but the Germans used their flazpanzers (20 mm or 37 mm) on ground targets with great effect. FWIW, our vehicles, usually half-tracks, that had the "Quad twenties" or a 40 mm Bofors, also were often used more on ground targets, as by early '45 the Luftwaffe was largely out of business.

Interesting idea of a high caliber Autocannon. The issues seems minor, but they are critical. #1 A high rate of fire weapon means you have to actually carry enough ammunition for sustained fire. #2 You have to plan for multiple purposes and one of the most basic things a tank may fight are Infantry. High velocity weapons have poor anti-infantry properties as they shells have to be reinforced decreasing the explosive content. This isnt a new issue. Anti-Aircraft capabilities sounds great, but unless its a missile that only means you can shoot at Helicopters in hover mode. Thats a great example of some issues. High caliber anti-aircraft autocannons in the 20-40mm range could only hold a relatively small amount of ammunition, usually enough to fire for less than 60 seconds at full rate. I see this 75mm autocannon blowing through its ammunition too quickly to actually be sustainable. It could have been useful on light vehicles

Eugene Stoner's gun system was originally being constructed as AAA for pre revolution Iran. So it'd be setup in batteries, radar guided, & taking on all low flying aircraft. At the time going in low was the only way planes could accurately engage ground targets.

Part the reason this tank was not put into service was its lack of storage for amo ( 20-30 rounds ), this is part the reason it fired in burst.

Very good Soookston, besides your usual entertaining video I was glad to see the US had seriously considered the basic thought of gun size. Tanks are not like battleships, you can not just keep making bigger platforms for bigger guns. While ultimately this idea did not work, even to this day we should be looking into different kinds of ammunition and different protection schemes. Land warfare does not treat a handful of huge weapons platforms well which is the path larger and larger conventional guns leads to.

What i just don't get it why not just make 1 and a half new vehicles, right? Make the M551 Sheridan, then also make the HSTVL/CCVL Turret/Gun and just mount it on the existing Sheridan Chassis/Transmission/Powerpack/etc. Cause, in my mind, i just can't see any reason why that isn't the most optimal solution outside of logistics. And while yes, logistics is really like damn near 75% of war, then 15% is intelligence, and the last 10% is actually combat; I still think the Sheridan/HSTVL combo would've been worth it. The reason i think it'd be so worth it is because i honestly don't think anyone can convince me that even a full platoon of Sheridans (so 4) would be more combat capable than 1 Sheridan and 1 HSTVL, within their intended role. Like, first of all, let's pressuppose i'm correct on that 4 Sheri's v 1Sheri/1HSTVL logic. If you've got a Tank Platoon supporting Infantry, in an ideal world you're gonna want at least 1 _full company_ of infantry to support that armor element, giving you a 1 Platoon Inf. per Tank ratio. If you're rolling with 1 Sheridan & 1 HSTVL, i'd argue you could potentially get away with a single platoon of infantry to provide security for both of the vehicles, seeing as how devastating the implication of 70 rounds per minute of 60mm HE would be against infantry. So in that situation you could have a single Company of Infantry supporting 2 Air-Deployable Armor Platoons 4 Sheridans and 4 HSTVL's, two of each in each platoon. Then the second thing i just can't unwrap my head around is, if you'll excuse my word-inventioneering, the sheer tactical elasticity you get from having a Fat-Ass 152mm Howitzer/Rocket Tube _AND_ a 70 rpm 60mm Anti-Tank Machinegun supporting an infantry platoon at the same time. Like the combat flexibility is absurd. Helicopters? HSTVL. Concrete Fortifications that would make the Fuhrer blush? Sheridan, HE. Mid-1950's China-Style Division-Sized Infantry Rush across flat ground? HSTVL. Like yeah, i'm being flippant and providing kind of insane scenarios, but you see my point right? Every time i hear about/think about the XM274, the CCVL Program, or the concept of an 'ATMG' in general, this kinda shit is all i can think about. In my mind all i can see is all of this seemingly _wasted_ potential and it bums me out man.
