We've recently talked about the Medium Caliber Anti-Armor Automatic Cannon program (MCAAC) and the impressive 75mm XM274 Ares cannon that spawned from it. I've also talked about the High Survivability Test Vehicle Lightweight (HSTV-L), a concept vehicle that used said gun. However, we haven't really touched on the tank that was actually supposed to go into service with such a potent weapons system. After the success of the HSTV-L, AAI Corporation set about improving it and preparing it for combat. This led to the RDF/LT, the Rapid Deployment Force Light Tank. The RDF/LT has quickly become my all-time favorite tank, with its high performance and practicality. I hope Gaijin adds it someday.

@@Rexhunterj Army acquisition graft induced nepotism department. They also had multiple more standard light tanks to choose from for 40 years and still went with the one that will be loaded up to the gills at 40 tons and cucked on hills because of the pitching of the rear.

I was supposed to be in the co-drivers hatch in that opening video of the RDF-LT- I was one of the people on the restoration team. It’s honestly one of my favorite tanks as well. So unique and awesome to ride in.

I always liked the subject of tank suspension, it’s not a very talked about part of tanks, it’s often forgotten but it is pretty important, you know cuz tanks need to drive so they also need to be able not be on the floor, I love looking at different setups of similar suspensions like how many leaf spring bogies were made, Christie suspension layouts and many others (torsion bar is kinda mainstream and boring they are almost all equal)

You forget to note the full quote. “A Jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” Given you could design and use canister shells to fit the gun of the vehicle, it be fairly superb at being an anti-infantry vehicle, while being moderate at tackling other challenges such as other armored vehicles, fortifications, and aircrafts at a fair speed for its fire rate. Depending on the environment, have a set loadout of ammunition, in an urban environment, most of the shells being canister shells while the rest is normal AP shells or APCR or something. In an open field against opposing armor, it could be equipped with mainly AP or APCR shells with some HE and canister shells for infantry and small fortifications such as small rapidly built bunkers. This tank is something I kind of wished had happened so we could have better seen how it performed in combat… the same for IS-7 to me, it’s pike nose armor, combined with modern day reactive armor as well, I would have liked to see Howe that would have turned out. Even more so, our modern day engines and motors could better improve its ability to perform potentially given some of tanks used 1500hp engines while quite some tanks of the past used 500hp engines.

@@matthiuskoenig3378 Full caliber shot has more to it. APFSDS is a subcaliber piercing round. You sacrifice force and mass for putting energy on a fine point at speed. Shooting light armor with AP shot and SAP is going to be more devastating. Repeated 25lb mass strikes on a wider area vs 5lbs imparting less distress. It will take less ammo to shred something like a BMD, PT, BTR, or 2S3. The argument of HEAT comes up, but that relies on a lot of ideal factors to match and of course your fuse needs to work. The BTR ambush incident involving HEAT-FS rockets shows that people overestimate it. I am going to bring up my version of HSTVL autism in the 120mm M58, because there was the US version shooting 120mm full caliber shot, wearing much more on the barrel, and the British variant with APDS. The full caliber shot was particularly nasty on a strike by strike basis which had the Soviets changing up the T-10 from 1957 to 1967 in panic and making tanks like the T-64. It's not just the penetration, but also the mass effect.

So to put it short, a few people at the top quite literally just got upset that they didn't get their way and dropped a fairly good vehicle concept, not even concept, it has shown to be useful. I feel like they just complained about its "issues" just to have something to complain about, because it met all requirements, and it could take care of all threats listed pretty well. maybe not great, but like you said its a jack of all trades. good at many, but not great in any single category. Real shame because that tank honestly, especially now with the current warfare climate, can be very useful. Its small, packs a punch and can deal it out fairly rapidly. It being able to be deployed quickly is also a very nice thing to add and makes logistics easy if anything. We could have spent time perfecting this then coughing up more random designs like we are in 2022-2024. Especially with the advent of drones, an airburst round for the 75 would of been perfect for this role, swat out drones like a mini flak gun.

Sounds like these would end up fill a supporting fire role had they been adapted, since they were jack of all trades, master of none. So a tank destroying a bunker would get cover fire with this protecting them from enemy aircraft or rocket launcher carrying infantry. Basically using suppressing fire to keep the enemy from destroying a friendly unit from doing the job they specialize in doing.

The concept could be revisited with a robot tank. Without needing a crew, it would free up a lot of space for a bigger gun, more ammo, and could accommodate a more sophisticated autoloader more easily.

main issue with drone tank is simple: enemy may try jamming communication, effectively disabling tank.

@@countsudoku6305 The effectiveness of jamming is way exaggerated. There's actually no good evidence of it achieving a mission kill. But to preclude any possibility, it should have redundancy, if one relay is jammed, it simply uses another relay. Other manned tanks near by can act as relays, or even directly control the robot tank. Ideally, an AI would take over if the robot is completely jammed, which is unlikely.

You don't want a more sophisticated autoloader. This type with ct munition about as good as it gets without putting ammo above the turret ring.

@@jintsuubest9331 No you do. A more sophisticated autoloader means a more robust and reliable loader, that might be bulkier but is feasible in a vehicle with no crew. It can also potentially be faster at reloading. Without a crew, you don't have to put ammo in more vulnerable places.

HSTV-L should have gone into service dispite being a testbed… it’s look is good and it really could have worked. just thicken the armor and many shells will ricochet or not pen. as well as more fuel and ammo cap

Im curious if you could do a how bad/ good is such and such vehicle on the Leclerc and challenger 2 as they seem to be the most looked down upon NATO MBTs, especially the leclerc being considered a bad vehicle or just overlooked/ignored by various people (in all fairness I thought of the thing being a bit "meh" myself and I thought the challenger was just ok) so it'll be interesting to be enlightened on these two from available info and how effective they are in their doctrine.

На практике бронебойно-подкалиберный снаряд для малого калибра обходится не намного дешевле, чем для крупнокалиберного. Но для эффективности требуется в десятки, если не сотни раз больше. В итоге в реальности боекомплект для такой машины стоит дороже или наравне, чем сама техника.

The Stryker which literally they could have purchased Centauro to have but better instead of cucking out their light tank budget... They are 100% going to obscure the general regret of the MPF being kitted up into the mid high 30 tons range and also having a rear turret which absolutely makes itself known on the kinds of journeys a standard light tank makes. Ordered a light, picked a TAM2 at home. Might I add in the face of the M8 which had 105 and 120 variants at a much lighter weight while kitted up since the 90's. Spookston's Steve had no endurance (lel shitty turbine) and exotic ammo ensuring it was never standard, but there was another suitor, the Stingray 2 the US Army also ignored in the 90's to give Gryffindor points to GD 30 years later... I suppose at least you can depress over your ass to go with your less usable frontal depression, lol.

@@lector-dogmatixsicarii1537 I wouldn't even be surprised if the Army reducing the air deploying requirement for MPF was the result of GD lobbying. Plus the M8 was used as a testbed for ETC cannons, meaning it was already future proofing without even entering service.

Странно, я всегда думал что для такого типа машин как раз широкий спектр возможностей на поле боя должен быть в приоритете. Тут я по пехоте постреляю, тут я бмп уничтожу, тут я укрепление обстреляю, тут я вертолет подобью (там же вроде были снаряды с дистанционным взрывателем). Да еще и прибавь к этому скорость, компактные размеры, меленький экипаж и готова идеальная машина. Но видимо возможность пробить в лоб танк противника перевешивает все эти достатки.

@@Spookston there is much infos, but mostly in french, basicaly, à 40mm high ROF stab turet with 4 MMP (long range guided missile with BVR capacity) All of that slaped on a high mobility wheeled chasis wich is 12.7 proof

The new weapons bid wasn't just for a new rifle but also a new saw. And general dynamics saw sucked ass, and their rifle was 1ib heavier for no real improvement in preformance. The only people who think general dynamics bids were better are people with a bullpup bias.
