My honest experience with long established, credible hardware companies is there is a reason why they are still in business after 50 plus years! Reliability and accountability. All the API equipment I own has not as yet ever needed any maintenance and the API 1608 we used on the 2nd Fray Album was plug and play with zero maintenance ever.

@nickwallette6201
@nickwallette6201 Год назад
That's what spares are for. :-) If every channel is a set of line cards, you can have one each on a shelf. It would likely be pricey to keep the automation controller as a spare, but if it is indeed just a mechanical addition to a 100% analog desk, then you should be able to limp along without it. As Mitch Hedberg would say "escalators can't ever be out of service, they just become stairs." So it is when this desk becomes just a manual analog mixer. ;-)

Question for Warren: like a lot of people, I exclusively use an interface box to plug mics into ProTools. So I’m using whatever preamps are in that all-in-one interface box. (an Onyx Blackbird by Mackie) How much difference, and what sort of difference, might I get from sticking an external mic pre before the interface?
@Ryan_Messenger
@Ryan_Messenger Год назад
I've seen improved results by having a mic pre and compressor going into a line level input on my interface. It allows me to keep the level on the interface lower which helps with noise because I have more control over the signal going into the interface.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro Год назад
@@Ryan_Messenger thanks ever so much for sharing your experience! That really helps people!
@tehpeasant
@tehpeasant Год назад
So one thing I don't quite understand with recording with analogue consoles with DAWs... When you use the Direct Out on each Channel, you can't actually use the EQ and the Compressor, because you take the signal right after the gain stage, right? So is this something people actually do? Or do they instead use the insert sends to go into their AD/Audio-Interface? But when you do that, you will still get the signal before the fader. Honestely, I've been recording for years but since I never really used analogue consoles, this kinda confuses me.
@mikearango1744
@mikearango1744 Год назад
On this board the direct outs are post fader, so you can drive the mic pre as desired then use the fader to attenuate to “tape” after processing using the EQ and, optionally, the insert point. Additionally, you can tap/reinsert the signal at the preamp output, EQ input, EQ output, and fader input, so it can be used in many configurations, including pseudo inline. We did some of this in the tracking video from last week
@tehpeasant
@tehpeasant Год назад
@@mikearango1744 Thanks a lot, now it makes sense! Are direct outs always post fader on these recording mixing desks?
@nickwallette6201
@nickwallette6201 Год назад
@@mikearango1744 Interesting. I've always been a "record the raw audio and process later" type. But being able to switch post-EQ send, and then pre-EQ return would be really useful -- particularly if you need more filters than you have variable pots, and still want to use the hardware. I bet the schematics are quite lively! haha
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro Год назад
@@nickwallette6201 one of the things I love about using consoles is committing to the sound! Personally I prefer to print with EQ and compression on, when needed, then be able to bring up on fader the song exactly as I hear it! That’s the way the albums we hold up S being the greatest ever made were all done. However, I understand that not everyone is confident in doing that and it take many years to get to a place where you feel confident committing your sound

@APIAudioOfficial
@APIAudioOfficial Год назад
The main difference between is that the 2448 is in-line, so you have a large fader path and a small fader path. The bus architecture and center section are the same with a few subtle differences pertaining to the in-line functions. The 1608-II is available in 16, 32, or 48 channel configurations while the 2448 is available in 24, 32, or 40 channels. There are some additional options available to the 2448 such as 30" producer's workstation and 19" rack buckets as well.

@@APIAudioOfficial awesome - thank you very much for taking the time to answer that for me. That’s exactly what I was looking for. For some reason I had it in my head that the 1608 was inline as well but with pots instead of the small faders. Great explanation!

@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro Год назад
I don’t believe it’s any kind of competition or downplay to any other company whether they are still current or now gone to point this feature out. Many companies to save on price do not make this feature and most importantly the current and hugely successful 500 series modules are ALL because of API and that has conquered and out lasted all competition. So I think it’s pretty ok to point that out.

This is actually something I like about API - you can get all their tone-shaping stuff in Lego pieces to do whatever you want with. (Not that it's within my budget, but I like it nonetheless.) My dream setup would be 100% modular. Racks of 500 pres and EQs and compressors, everything straight to DAW after the pres, a completely digital fader board with no audio -- just automation send/recv, and an analog summing box to mix the channel outputs from DAW. You could go anywhere from 100% analog (except with DAW-as-tape), to 100% ITB.

80-90% of the price of any console like this is going to be the case, the mic Pres, the EQs, the faders, the knobs, the VUs etc. the other features are all optional. So you can buy it loaded in all kinds of configurations
