A little short TMI. The 'Mao' in Mao Mao's name actually means 'cat' in Chinese, so that's why she has cat ears whenever she has that chibi form. It was also nice of you guys to catch the fact that 'curiousity kills the cat' because Maomao is so curious all the time. XD

Maomao is constantly trying to keep a low profile, but Jinshi won't let her brain sit idle and drags her into affairs she's trying to avoid. Her little friend Xiaolan meets with Maomao for snack time and fills Maomao in on all the rumors and doings in the rear palace.

I really like this series as it's a really solid historical fiction that's pretty grounded. It mixes Ming and Tang dynasty with a lot of accurate societal, structure, caste system, etc. The drama here is also very much what you would see in many Chinese shows about this period as it's always about the conflict between people in the palace, not about the warring events going on outside of the palace. The author really did their research. Also It's funny you said curiosity killed the cat. MaoMao's name is literally CatCat in Chinese, and you will notice she has a lot of catlike qualities in her personality aside from the physical transformations.

This series is so good. With this and Frieren coming out at the same time, I was spoiled by some of the best anime I’ve watched for 6 months. Both shot to the top of my favorite anime of all time. This current season has been a bit of a letdown in comparison since both series are done for a while.

Someone already clarified that an Apothecary is basically an ancient version of a pharmacist Though if we're being technical they're basically doctors who can also make medicine/drug remedies using herbs, mushrooms, etc there were doctors in the past separate from apothecaries or they worked together.

"what an awful place!" right!? but well, it's Ming-era China, afterall, haha. usually, older settings are used in fantasy anime, so you don't notice how much it sucks because there's magic. for example, in Frieren, if there weren't elves and dragons and wizards, it'd be an awful world to live in, because that's the real world of the past. I love that the story explores those aspects. of course, that's not a sleight to Frieren, just an advantage this story has which comes with its own possible disadvantages, like any setting.

The cover was incredible! So awesome MaoMao said that she needed something to write outloud, though it was a whisper. Jinshi said that the cloth used to write the message was the same cloth used for clothes of the serving girls and she had a very apparent tear on her dress, which she had to sew. They didn't say this outloud, only gave us a glimpse, so you might've missed it Also, just in case you don't know, being a eunuch means that you were castrated

Up until the 1800s whitening cosmetic often use lead as part of their powder which is toxic (mortal) on the long run. There was a scandal in the 1940s/50s by some cosmetic company trying to go back to that, but were stoped really fast. So the white powder problem is real problem which killed numerous of ladies along centuries.

Just fyi, they mentioned that Jinshi is a eunuch which in China they are all castrated. It was the rule that men had to be castrated if they worked in positions of high civil power in the imperial palace. the idea was if they cannot have children they would not be tempted to try to overthrow the emperor and start their own dynasty. I just thought it was funny the girls were all crushing on him knowing he is a eunuch.

Awesome to see this one too! Another anime that flew under the radar and is amazing quality is Delicious in Dungeon, a more comedic one where the depth and character come in subtly throughout the run, which is probably why it didn't strike as many people when it first started airing. Has amazing mature themes and minimal fanservice so goes well with the flow :D Would love to see ya guys do a reaction to that too!

11:56 Technically speaking, I THINK it's supposed to be an unnamed, fictional China-like nation. As far as the lore is concerned, they avoid mentioning China specifically, despite the obvious inspiration and parallels.
