I have a Newton emate 300. It gets to know your handwriting over time and until more recent apps, no other portable device allowed you to draw and type on screen in the same document in that way. It has a great keyboard and portable design by Jony Ive. In the late 1990s, I used it to write and print off several presentations and also my CV/ Resume. That CV landed me the job I was hoping for in medicine. That job was crucial for my career and during it, I saved the lives of many people including children whilst working as a doctor. I hope this may help the family of that engineer to know that it wasn't all in vain. I still love my Newton and it still works.

I was a kid when my dad was an engineering tech at Apple during the development of the Newton. I remember he was constantly fiddling with the Newton when he was home and showing me all the stuff it could do but the thing I remember the most is it never did learn my handwriting.

My grandparents had a chemical company that did contract work for the Californian aerospace industry around JPL and Pasadena and they had several late 80’s and early 90’s model Macs to automate some of their machines. My earliest tech memories were playing on old Mac desktops in the early 90’s. Those were my first experiences with a computer years before any of my friend’s families could afford to own one personally in the home.

It's John Scully's fault. Non tech experienced person should blurted out deadline and promise to customers without consulting with the head developers who lead the team working on the products/projects, no matter what positions they hold. I've been a developer for more than 5 years, this thing in the video happened when non tech experienced was oblivious and set the deadline with 0 or not enough clue how and what the process involved and how long, as well as days allocation for bug fixing and stuffs cos they think they know better.

Even with almost 7 years of experience as a software engineer, estimations are hard to give most of the time and unforeseeable issues occur. Pressure is possibly toughest part of the job. Everything is for yesterday and the toll it takes on the devs is almost always ignore.

I was an early adopter if the Newton in the 1990's. I ran my medical office software on Apple products (MediMac), and the Newton could interface with that software for electronic medical records. I would take my notes on the Newton and transfer them to the computer. When I needed to access a patient's records after hours, I could use remote network into the office computer and control the office computer to see the patient notes, and review their lab summaries and prescription records. I don't have any of my Newtons anymore, but still have their PCMCIA storage cards and still have the complete Mac IIsi and Mac LC as well as PowerPC 603e that used to run the office records and billing software (25 years later). I remember going to an Anthony Robins seminar in Florida and using my Newton to handwrite detailed notes for all of the sessions over several days, with almost perfect recognition of my cursive handwriting (not so much with printed writing). I had the penultimate doctor's handwriting until Newton trained me to be legible! My biggest gripe was that the screen could be easily scratched by the Apple stylus if a grain of dust got caught between the stylus tip and the screen.

I had an Apple Newton MessagePad 120 and I can say that it actually worked very well. It was remarkably accurate with recognising my terrible handwriting, both printed and cursive. I think the biggest problem with the Newton, was that Apple marketed it *_way_* too early, doing significant damage for the public's perception of the product.

A great book on the Newton is, "Defying Gravity" - written by the development team. I was an early developer for the Newton and still have a few functional ones.

I owned an apple newton 2k and loved it. It was far ahead of its time. I believe that it created the market for things like the palm pilot and ipaq . Its main problems were that it was too early. Most people were not connected (pre facebook, pre netflix, etc.) and it was expensive at the time. When everyone thought apple was crazy when they announced the iphone, I reminded them that they had already done it before but it was called the newton...

@@mayaparamita2254 It's an interesting thought, but I think we would still have Android. Apple was surely ahead of the times with the release of the iPhone. Without apple I do think we would probably have 2015 smartphone technology here in 2021. If Apple stayed completely out of the picture there is a good chance that Blackberry would still be a major player. Probably Blackberry vs Android right now.

Except for all the FACTUAL errors. But then dumbasses who know even less never seem to spot them. Every video in the past year has contained no less than 4 MAJOR ERRORS. So I'm guess you are one of the blind-dumbasses that never pick up on the mistakes - but you kneel at his feet as if he's God. Sorry, he's not. For the number of subscribers, and the sheer number of people who hang on his every word, Dagogo really SHOULD spend more time fact-checking before uploading. But I'm guessing that he just doesn't care any more when you have a captive, fawning, audience.

Absolutely fabulous! I thought I was the only one who knew of that Knowledge Navigator video (there is another awesome business one)! I've looked for it since the 90's, a college roommate had showed it to me around this early 90s period and I've reflect on how much is in the iPad and Siri, etc, but I could never find it. Your thoroughness of research and story telling is superb. Your reinstalled - I also noted the dismay of the Facebook bit posted today, it was not worthy of you and NOWHERE near the level of this Newton piece! Keep up the good work.

I couldn't afford a laptop i college so I bought a messagepad 130 on a tremendous student discount and used it all four years in college. Handwriting recognition was pretty good once trained and for classes where i couldn't keep up with writing notes I used the newton keyboard. Absolutely loved it. When i turn on my newton to this day it still has all the notes from my last college classes. Once out of school and with a real job, i bought a laptop and shelved the newton.

Love my Newton2000, still remember saving every penny as a kid to be able to afford it, did not have issues with my handwriting recognition. Used to love the NewtonTalk forum and learnt a lot from those earlier contributors. I still think if Steve Jobs continue with the development, the Newton would still be a successful product.

This video shows how John Sculley, non IT&non tech person, the project became failure, people got stressed out and mental. And people did not become suicidal and brought on the edge of their sanity under Steve Jobs. I've been a developer for more than 5 years, and my husband has been a developer for a decade at least. I've experienced it myself, under a leadership of person who *consult their tech team who work on the field* this thing in the video didn't happened. My husband experienced that mentioned in the video, his higher up with IT background resigned and a marketing guy with 0 tech experienced replaced that higher up. Suddenly that higher up guy agreeing every project with timeline that doesn't make sense, like 1/3 of the supposed timeline. Plus they didn't have enough people so 1 developer got moved between projects in days. This affected my husband's mental health. Since my husband was still under contract that if he resigned he had to pay fine, he decided not to and hold on. That changed his personality for months even after he finally left the company after the contract finished. You don't know what you're talking about. We're on the field in some cases experienced what's been told in this video.

The Newton may look like a disaster financially but the few users I know swore by these devices till 2007. I have a coworker who still takes notes on them. I think the newton failed because of the nonexistent design language at apple at the time and the general bad press apple got due to their confusing and sometimes lacking device lineup. Had the Newton come out in shells competitive to the early 2000s HTC handhelds and later Palm developed devices, had Apple actually garnered any friendly press at the time and had they enabled color early, this would’ve been a different story.

I still have my Newton 2100 and I break it out every once in a while to mess around with it. The hand writing recognition is still better than anything out today pretty much. After about 3 months of using it I was able to write on it with very few mistakes. It was a product that was way before it's time. LOL it was before Wifi so you had to connect using a modem.

Thanks Dagogo. Great Vid. I was part of Ericsson in the 2000's and legend has it that Steve Jobs inspiration for the iPhone was the Sony Ericsson P900, and perhaps some from the Newton as well.

A very good video, thorough and clear. Showing the sad truth that the extraordinary creativity and ingenuity of the Apple engineers was betrayed and put under intolerable pressure by the ignorance and greed of executives that had little or no appreciation for the complexities involved. I'm sure this is a scenario repeated many times since and that continues to this day.

The Micheal Fassbender, Danny Boyle one is very good though, a different angle for the storyline

My dad was Chief Engineer on the Newton project and for years I hardly ever saw him. He'd spend a few days at the office, then come home and sleep for like 20 hours. For years. Never knew if he was awake or even home, so lots of mornings involved moving silently down the stairs and over to the window to see if his car was in the driveway. The master bedroom in the house, which was barn shaped and very open, was an indoor balcony sort of affair. It's hard to describe, but basically the 2nd floor didn't cover all of the 1st floor. Because of this, sound traveled easily. To this day I still subconsciously walk as quietly as possible when I'm barefoot. No stomping, ball to heel. Haven't got much more to add than that other than I had my own Newton when I was 10, which was pretty baller. Not that pops paid for it, mind you, they just had test units laying around that couldn't be sold due to scratch and dent. Anyway, thanks for the video, it's really well done. Very insightful and a good topic. My only problem is, I hate it when your videos end, I was feeling so chilled and informed, then I don't know what to watch next. But, I got to say, your videos a such great little blasts of inspiration to keep working in the tech industry, I thank you very much for that. Please keep your videos coming, and your music too, Burn Water is great to listen to when I'm focussing. How about some Spotify playlists? For work, study, comtemplating etc.

I remember HP, Compaq, Sony and other companies made quite reliable PDAs. I don't think Apple can be credited with creating the PDA. Or even a PDA that made calls. The original iPhone basically was a PDA with an app ecosystem.

On release the iPhone didn't have apps. the Apps came with the iPhone 3G and iOs 2. They were counting on web apps. The iPhone was introduced by steve jobs as widescreen iPod, an internet communicator, and a Phone. What Apple nailed in the first iPhone was the screen and UI. It also helped that the high-end mobile processor at that time were starting to include a small on board GPU for graphic acceleration. Apple was the first to use GPU to make the UI smooth on a phone. It took until Android 4.0 or Ice cream sandwich until Android UI became fully accelerated (Android had partial UI acceleration before that).

@I OFFER YOU THIS The Palm Tx was released nearly two years prior to the iPhone and had a slightly larger screen (3.9 in vs 3.5) with the same 480x320 resolution. The on-screen keyboard and handwriting recognition was on par as well. When the iPhone was released, it did not have an app ecosystem and could not install apps of any kind. This capability was finally added over a year later with the v2 software update. While Apple got the form factor correct, Palm Treo and numerous other devices were vastly more capable, and continued to be until the release of the iPhone 3g. On a side note, I still recall having to jailbreak the first 3 or 4 generations of iPhones just so I could have custom SMS tones, even though many phones had that capability starting in the early 2000s.

If that's just what you remember, it's very much not an accurate statement. I had all of these Compaq, HP, and I even had the Tree 600 which was a phone, the bring problem was, that the OS was terrible, it was designed for a stylus to scroll up and down and tap on little buttons, handwriting was awful. Those were PDA's, like Palm, but a Personal Digital Assistant was all they were, a digital Filofax (contacts, calendar, notes, Reversi, and clock). Email was hit or miss, and you could load 4 MP3s on them. Seriously, as much as I thought those other PDAs were terrible at the time, they were at least better than nothing, hoping that it was the future, but they were so awful to use in reality. People, like us early day internet entrepreneurs, wanted to think they were amazing, but I didn't know anyone who could those things for more than 10 minutes at a time, and that's only to read your SMS or answer your phone. Apple didn't invent the PDA, you're right, because nobody wants a digital Filofax, they want their life in their pocket. Although, you're right in some ways. It was near on impossible to get apps for Windows Pocket PC, or the Palm one, because you had to hunt around weird wide web at the time (early 2000s, download it, unzip it, and then side-load it onto your phone by plugging it into your PC. So yeah, having an over-the-air verified app store was a first, and was a game changer. But an multi-touch screen device built for your fingers was also a major game changer

@ghost mall maybe things like the Palm Pilot, there were a few others, but the level of science was nowhere near ready to make anything better than a crappy digital Filofax (if you know what a Filofax was). It's take at least another 10 years for science to discover enough to make the first version of something truly useful

Their handwriting recognition was really ahead of its time, albeit in a premature state in the Newton. They improved upon it and reintroduced it as the Scribble feature on today's iPads.

I still have the Newton. They were so near to getting it right, and it was too big...and then came Palm Pilot that you could fit in the pocket. The database software by Balcones Software was the best I have ever used.

Oh man! I’ve been wondering for years about who made the stupid little quasi-laptop things that we were forced to use in middle school around 1997. They were glitchy trash that took up so many class periods trying to diagnose why an assignment was lost, etc that the teachers finally revolted, defying the principle (and I’m guessing the school board and/or a private contractor) and took us back to doing our assignments with pen and paper. I just saw that weird little laptop thing for the first time in 20 years at 13:37. Crazy! Ours were translucent green though, in case someone would like to tell me the name and release date of the thing. I’d love to buy one on e-Bay for nostalgia’s sake. Edit; it was 1997 not 2000 and it was the eMate 300!

I had several, and was a developer for some time. One issue you did not touch on is that it had a steep learning curve for developers compared to things about at the time and so did not attract as many devs - its unique NewtonScript and very odd operating system. Other devices like Psion and then Palm tended to use C++ and straight forward libraries and OS. 2000 still has pride of place in my retro computer display though :)

I used a friend's Newton once back in 1995, it was pretty fun but clunky and you couldn't really do a lot. Palm would end up dominating the market with their killer PDA the Pilot.

This video is misleading. PDAs were invented in the 1980s. They were called "electronic organisers" and sold by the millions. They were made by calculator companies like Sharp and Radio Shack. Their main function was as a contact and calendar manager. They had a serial cable to connect to a PC. I had a one that lasted ~ 10 years before I replaced it with a Us Robotics PalmPilot.
