I am an artist and graphic designer, so I do love using my iPad Pro 10.5 for artwork, sketching and drawing. But definitely, it’s also a great tool for other non-drawing functions. All my note taking is done on my iPad in client meetings or for personal notes at work and freelancing at home. My personal favourite note taking app by far is Noteshelf 2. It has tons of features like custom color palettes, multiple pen sizes and highlighters. You can also create custom notebook covers, custom page backgrounds, PDF annotation, importing or pasting photos into a page and then resize and rotate for those images all the while being able to mark them up. You can export direct to Evernote or share to multiple platforms. Digital note taking has really changed the way I work. Good on you to point out that the Apple Pencil is not just for art.
Just got a Apple Pencil for Christmas. So glad I found this video. Most videos that I found on the Apple Pencil were for people who like to draw they didn’t have many videos that showed you how to use the Apple Pencil if you’re not an artist.
Great video! It seems that you are a natural for this Chris. I like how you explain the tech with clarity and you focus directly on your points without unnecessary distractions and such. More like this!(*subscribes*)
Love your explanations! I bought the pencil and have never used it because I’m not an artist so I didn’t know what to use it for once I got it. Now I know several things I will use it for. I use notes a lot! 🙏
Bro he says “unless there were some type of magnetic connected between the two at 6:00 but little did he know the second gen pencil would have that. I wonder if they got the idea from him... conspiracy? Great video though. I’ve been looking for one like this because I’m not an artist and all the vids were about artists using it
Fantastic and very informative video from another non artist that owns the new iPad Pro and pencil. I can't wait for the iOS 11 to come out. Great work and keep up the amazing content!
Second comment; I bought the iPad and the pencil, and Luma Fusion, but I never thought about using the pencil with LF until I saw your presentation. If it weren’t for people like yourself providing new insights, I would be wasting the potential of so many devices that could have made work a lot easier. Thanks again!
I use and love the UAG Smart Case for ipad pro. It has a nifty clip that securely holds the Apple Pencil. I’m never worried about losing it. Plus its a sturdy case without adding bulk or weight.
Apple Pencil = no arthritis pain when taking notes. I am lucky to be able to hand write a single page without pain, yet take notes all day at work. Love it!
Thanks Christopher. Your channel is so down to earth and accessible to me. I'm not a power user, I'm not an artist, but I do want to understand how to get the most out of my iPad, especially for productivity.
You could also use a 20-40$ pen that does everything the 100$ apple pencil does (you only don't get pressure sensitivity which is crucial for artists). Of course if you could afford the iPad pro/ iPad air then go for it, but if you're considering the cheaper iPad / iPad mini, then it makes no sense because you're paying a third of the tablet's price juste to get some fonctionalities that only artists use ! Not a surprise how apple makes so much money. They market their products so well, it make you believe you need it when you actually don't.
also stylus's in general help people with dexterity issues, as it's easier to hold/ manipulate a pen/pencil, that to use ones clumsy fingers!, esp when accuracy is required, like typing numbers and passwords, or the screen navigation ( far too easy to tap or double tap with hands, or to swipe by accident!).
Nice list. A big one for me is Astropad Studio. I use my iPad and Apple Pencil as a graphics tablet for doing my photo editing. Like you, I can't draw, but I do a ton of photo editing and the Pencil is so much nicer than the mouse.
Great comprehensive video thanks. I've been using the 53 pencil due to my iPad Air not being compatible with the Apple Pencil. It's ok but not as good as the Apple Pencil. I'm trying to convince myself to upgrade the iPad ! Incidentally Kavaj do great leather iPad cases with Apple Pencil holders.
+Jason Hewitt I liked the 53 Pencil, but the system stuff that comes with the Apple Pencil is just to good to pass up. And you should definitely upgrade! Thank you for watching!
nice video! i use it for some games, puzzles, sometimes even on facebook, because it feels kind how better using the pencil. more interactive and cleaner
Thank you for this video! I was just gifted an iPad and an Apple Pencil and like you I’m not really an artist, per say, I love some of your ideas for using the Apple Pencil thanks for your time and video.
Finally, a video i was looking for. I mean I understand that the Pencil is a wonderful gadget for artist and digital designers but finally I found a quick video to show me what I can do with the pencil a a non-artist :D. I actually wanted to use it for university to annotate slides and assignments in my courses, so I guess I won't regret the pencil arriving tomorrow. Thank you for your review and keep up the good work :D
Very informative video, your issue at the end has been resolved with the new iPad that can hold the new apple pencil magnetically. Great work, helped me decide if I should get an apple pencil as a non artist or not.
thanks so much for the informative content. This video came up on my recommended list so know I'm a bit late. I have been using the pencil for quite some time. However, you did show me some things I hadn't realised for notes. The AHA moment came when you showed the pen loop. I have a spare one of these I've had for a couple of years so now I know exactly where its going! Those things are next to impossible to remove so like you, I don't like sticking things on my devices but this is the ONE exception. Thanks again. PS I hadn't seen the desk stand before so off to look for one.
Just a thought but when you mentioned the pencil rolling away it reminded me of why the pencils I prefer don’t roll away and are very tactile. I didn’t choose then but they don’t roll away. The Norris Staedtler B I think they where called. It was German and there should probably be a h in that spelling.
I have a pen holder that goes on the smart keyboard case. Works nicely. So far I use the pencil in Affinity Photo. I tried to use it more when taking notes but I can just type way faster and it's much neater, kinda feels like writing notes with it, is just finding a reason to use the pencil, unless you write faster or better than you type. I do like to mark up screen shots and things like that, articles, etc in Evernote.
+nagol5178 do you have a link to the pen holder? For me handwriting notes just helps me write without distraction. Plus I just enjoy handwriting notes.
Yes, here is the link, it goes around the part of the Smart Keyboard that doesn't affect anything, like not the part where it folds out or anything, so I don't ever notice it. I do like to write handwritten for serious study but for me that goes to paper journals. I do like to use the pencil as a stylus because navigating the Ipad seems more fun with it than my fingers on a lot of apps. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MG3LJLY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Handwriting is better for absorbing the content, in case you're a student and stuff, or when you have to add graphics, draw tables and stuff like that on your notes.
I'm a newbie, first time seeing your videos. I am literally between buying a 2018 iPad to a 12.9 IPro. I currently have an I Pad 2nd generation but desperately need more storage and 32g is not getting it. My only concern is will 128g be enough for me. Your video is awesome and honest. Thank you !
Hi, I’m a new iPad Pro user, your video is useful. Do keep up the good work. I think we need more videos for non-artist users like ourselves. More practical videos.
Regarding the pencil power , I have a question for you or anyone reading. Seems the pencil looses its power rather quickly when stored, like in a few days. Even when it was new. I had heard that if you don’t disconnect it properly, it will, while in sleep mode still connect and use power. I routinely unpair mine before I store it in the slot/pocket of my cover/protective case. Any hits on what to do or it just the reality of the pencil. Tks Great video for us non artists. 👍
Enjoyed the video!I’m a non artist considering the pencil. A couple of questions : How does it function with a screen protector, I have an Otterbox Defender? If i have to loose the otterbox is there any protectors that work with the pencil? And finally, does the tip scratch the screen? Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video. 👍 I don’t draw either, but I just bought an iPad Mini 5 and was wondering if it’d be worth it to buy the Apple Pencil to go with it - and with my iPad 9.7” 2018/6th gen - and this helped a lot. :)
Hey man! Awesome review. I've been trying to find a review of the Apple Pencil for non artists for a while and your video popped into my recommended and has really helped me see what it can do besides drawing. Thanks again :)
Very helpful video. Recently got a 10.5 iPad Pro and have been on the fence about adding the pencil. I'm decided now, and looking forward to receiving it. Thanks for the info.
the only thing that bothers me a lot is charging this thing. I get about 2-3 days of battery life out of it, but i always have to double check if its charged before going out. I would like to see some kind of magnetic system that also wirelessly charges the pencil, so i can just slap it to the ipad and dont worry about battery life! Hope they make that step in the future.
+Sander169 I just plug it in the side when I’m making coffee in the morning and its good to go by the time I’m ready to work. Though your right some sort of wireless charging would be nice.
first of all, great video! Very clear explanation and subbed. I am currently deciding if I want to buy the Ipad pro 12.9 including the Apple pencil or a different tablet. Do you know if it is possible to use side by side view, so 2 apps, word and a pdf app and use the pencil to select a part of the pdf file and copy it directly to Word? So it looks a little bit like swiping a part of the pdf? It would help me a lot to decide.
Christopher Lawley Great video, informative too. Sorry to but in on this convo but I'm interested to know what OCR means. I have a Pro & pencil & I've started to use it in my business. can't wait to start using the new 'instant' note capability in IOS11, for me that's a genius move by Apple. My iPad will become a piece of paper in the blink of an eye, love it.
first time seeing you, dig the working mans approach at it :) I was on the fence about it but now I can see somethings I can use it for. I am guessing it works in iMovie and Photoshop apps too :) you got a new subscriber :) I am an apple geek you sold me :D
Great video, especially for me who is not an artist either lol. However, i have noticed that when i markup things via email and send them right back, my markups do not show up on the document to the receiving email address... any idea as to why that is?
hey bro awesome video I wish I can see your channel reaching 50k before 2018 !!! keep making awesome videos I am looking forward to it !!! liked subbed !!
Thanks for the video. I’ve got the 10.5 Pro and love it. I’m not using the Pencil much but know I’m missing out. I’m struggling to annotate Word and Pages documents and can’t find a way to do it. Any hints? Best wishes from UK.
Export them as PDF and use the built in markup feature on iOS, that’s the best and easiest way. Or you can send the documents to an app like notability or good notes.
Thanks for the tips. I really learned some thing and appreciate your use ability insights. While you were talking, I stop the video and investigated your suggestions: they were great.
Very clear and informative video! Thank you. It seems Apple took your advice and made the newest iPad/pencil magnetic :-) A Question: I want to be able to transform handwriting to typed document. There are SO many apps out there. Any suggestions?
I would like to see them add a mouse dot to the pencil with the ability to hold down say CMD or some key so that it could draw up a sub menu contextual display a bit like the Samsung Note pen or bring out a new pencil with a built in button facility for this.
