The Ultra is a solid watch. I’ve got mine a week ago but sat and paired it only yesterday. And I think it is a huge increment over the previous watches.

You need to try the ocean band! Apple’s rubber is really soft and feels really premium. Changed the whole wearing experience for me when I initially got the Alpine Loop

It isn't piercing loud but that sound travels well so it can still be heard. It isn't always about being really loud, you need the sound to carry when you are sending the distress signal.

Tried one on at the apple store and it wasn't as big as I thought it would be - coming from someone who daily wears a 3861 hesalite on a 6.5 ish inch wrist. Though it is designed quite well as you mentioned, I am still hesitant to get into the smartwatch world. Excited to see what the Ultra will look like in 3-5 years.

Yeah it's tough to come from our world where it will last as long as we want to the smartwatch world, but I came from an Apple Watch originally. Either way, agreed. I'm sure many iterations are to come.

I really appreciate your thoughtful review that goes way beyond functionality to feeling which is certainly Apple's forte. I'm not an athlete in any way and I have a small wrist. I love my Apple watches and for some wacko reason the Ultra appeals to me and I think you capture very will why that is. Thank You!!

Can’t wait for my Apple Watch ultra to arrive ! I was wearing two watches for different things. A Casio Protrek and a fit bit. This will be my first smart watch . I’ll be using it for surfing , fishing, paddling, camping , hiking, walking , etc.

I work out almost everyday, usually gym and weights, HIIT.. I'm not a rock climbing adventurer or diver or uber outdoorsman. I'm coming from an Apple Watch 7 45mm, which still felt small on my wrist, and why I never got an Apple Watch until they came with the larger size last generation. That being said I LOVE this watch. My series 7 I usually took off as soon as I got home, and never really wore it except to work out at the gym, the Ultra I wear everywhere and it stays on until I go to bed. Yes I swapped the series 7 for the Ultra and I have ZERO regrets I did it, nor about the price, its worth every penny imo, whether or not you are a hardcore athlete, outdoorsman, or just want a fantastic capable smart watch that is built like a tank, I highly recommend it, regardless of its too big for your partners wrist :)

Great video. I have to disagree with you. “There’s an app for that” has always been an Apple selling point, almost from day one. Apple’s developers kit and API (?) is supposedly second to none and Apple has always encouraged using the creative products in the App Store. You get the Ultra PLUS access to thousands of apps Apple has made available to customize your devices completely. The App Store isn’t a cop out, but was created as an added feature. That why it’s been copied by every other platform.

Agree 100% sad thing is that the best app for the Watch is WorkOutDoors and they haven’t update the app to take advantage of everything watchOS 9 can do. It is painful to see Apple not taking advantage of all the information they get from you if you want to have an idea if you need to rest or not you need Athlytic app which is great but sooo expensive.

@@JJCA82 that’s too bad. Apple was smart enough to recognize early on no company could create a device that went down in the weeds for every genre. So it’s the illustrators, graphic designers, photographers, fitness professionals… themselves who know what they need and create it. Maybe fitness itself is too broad for professionals to create a perfect app, but stay positive, maybe a sports developer will “crack the code” soon.

I've the trail strap, extremely comfortable and it's made to wear all the time. I disagree with what you said about it wasn't meant for your wife and people with smaller wrists. In fact, it's perfect for anyone with wrist size from 5.5 inches and above.

I am a watch guy to the core. I currently own 2 Navitimers, 2 Speedys, a Rolex batgirl as well as a Planet Ocean and this is the first smartwatch I bought. Something about the titanium/sapphire combo makes it feel more like what I’m used to. I’m going to be mostly using when I’m working and moving around. All the other times, it’ll be the mechanical pieces.

That's going to be my first Smart watch and now they got me with the Ultra. I feel like a victim of Apple marketing and in the same time I am happy 🙃 It sounds like the extra lte excess for your smart watch is pretty expensive in the US (?) I remember back then in Europe you got a second sim card for free but don't know how it is right now with e-sim. The Oceanic+ App for Diving, they have different price models, so if you go diving on your vacations for example you can buy it for 10$ / month, that's ok! So you don't have to spend a fortune for subscriptions.

With always on turned off at work my watch is using 1% an hour and yesterday on my day off it used 2% an hour with a ten mile walk with using activity app counting step, heart rate and blood oxygen. Compared to my series 6 would use closer to 40% battery doing a similar walk.

The Apple Watch Ultra is definitely a cool watch. I do recommend to some people. Its built like a tank and works extremely well. However, I highly suggest you try it on first and wear it for a couple of days to see if you like it or not. Personally, I had to return mine. I notice the biggest problem for me was its size. It was so massive on my wrist (I have 16cm wrists). It looked awesome but it became more of a distraction (even with the screen turned off). I couldn't help but constantly stare at it every time I twisted my wrist. Luckily I had a 7 day money back guarantee. So I got my money back. Went with a series 8 Nike cellular watch instead. Also combine it with my iPad mini 6 to replace my iPhone. The mobility of the Apple swatch series 8 41mm with the productivity of the iPad mini 6 is an incredible combo imo. I hope this helps.

This one was a curve ball, but another great video, well-spoken, argumentative and thought-provoking. I sold the Apple Watch SE and the Garmin Fenix 5S and bought an 80USD 42mm Amazfit for fitness tracking. It's enough for sports and leaves wrist time for the "classics".

Nice review out of the perspective of a watch enthusiast (like me)! I find the Ultra extremely interesting, but went for the SE instead just like you. Here in Germany it is 300€ vs 1000€. The price different is just too much. I would love to have the better battery live and protruding bezel of the Ultra, but I am not willing to pay 700€ just for that. Especially as it is a smartwatch which needs to be replaced every few years. I was thinking the same about their marketing - just like luxury watch brands they are selling the dream of feeling like an Alpinist or pro diver. Watching the Apple Watch Ultra keynote felt a bit like seeing a Rolex Explorer billboard on top of a Swiss mountain when I was skiing a while ago 😂 Keep it up man, nice channel!

Yeah that's quite the jump! Agreed on the marketing front. Apple's taking a page out of the Rolex marketing book. Now they just need to tie the ultra to a specific set of athletes doing big things. Thanks!

For me getting an Apple Watch is not justification based on need. If I dive, I will get a proper dive computer like my Suunto. if I do competition runs then I will use my Garmin. I buy the Apple Watch because for a smartwatch it gives very comprehensive bang for the buck and it is a powerful computer on wrist. I like that to have that tech on my wrist and it is so very convenient as I also use the iPhone. If I want to really dress up then I will wear a proper mechanical dress watch. I don’t think that there is one watch that fits all needs.

I’m like you on this. I wear my IWC’s on the regular. This watch is cool. I got it. The only draw is I want to work out and close those rings. Everything else is bs and same as the rest of these smart watches.
