Four years after selling my Triumph Speed Triple, I have a chance to ride another of the noughties top super nakeds- the Aprilia Tuono 1000R.
How will this Italian thoroughbred compare to my old British muscle bike, and how will this 14 year old bike feel in 2022.
With 133hp and absolutely no rider aides to speak of, this is when super nakeds were completely unrestrained!

Thank you Freddie for a really honest review! I have to agree with 99 percent of what you are saying. It's an uncompromising bike and every potential buyer should know that. But if an uncompromising and unfiltered experience with an amazing soundtrack is what you are after, there is nothing like it! Where I mostly disagree is that, when you get used to it, it's not that uncomfortable. I´ve ridden it through Spain myself. You want to avoid the motorways, but you can spend hours on the twisty bits. And, of course, it´s waaaaay better than any Triumph ;-D I´m selling the bike because I´ve gotten myself stuck in the offroad/adventure swamp... It's not fair to this Italian stallion to be parked in the garage all the time ;-) //Bänkt - owner of the bike

Hi there, I wanna buy a 2009 Tuono, my only concern is how it rides in bad roads,bad pavement, potholes? I know that is not a dual sport but there are japanese naked bikes that do fine in those scenarios...

I'm not saying this bike is, but my back being fragile, I'm careful about those things. I repect that bike, I'd take the baby brother the Shiver 900. It's nowhere near as sporty but that's fine by me

I´m 45 today with two litlle kids, sold my Tuono 1000r back in 2018 and change it for a Triumph Tiger 800 Xc, watching this video makes me miss her so much. A true beast, regrets... ? i don´t know, we always want what we don´t have, reality was that everyday that passed was going to be more dificult to sold. Another thing is that it won´t fit for long journeys (i´m not doing them anyway with small kids). Another thing is that i don´t speed + 200 km/h (well... the Tiger can do it, someone told me...) anyway, like a nice but controversial old girlfriend, today i miss her. I owned the same model Tuono, in the same colour scheme. It was geared for 160 mph top speed, meaning you were in first year most of the time in urban traffic. So I installed the optional smaller final drive sprocket, which meant it wanted to pull vertical wheelie any time you were heavy handed on the throttle. An exciting beast of a bike that made every ride an adventure. However I agree with Freddie it would not be a good choice for enjoying the scenery at a cruising pace, or touring on. It encourages the hooligan in you to come out.

I have dozens of bikes and my tuono twin is my hooligan. I have bikes with equal power, but half the charisma. Even my Ducati's don't come close. Such a tool and suits this tool..

Iv got the factory model , it is indeed a beast , iv been riding on the roads for 52 yrs and this is the best , most fun l machine iv ever owned , and iv had some fast bikes , fantastic old school brute , no rider aids just you and the bike ,

Fanboy alert!! Just kidding, I am also a huge fan. Got myself exactly the same model as in the video. Bought it in 2019. Comfort wise not the best bike but I installed a pair of raisers and it works for me. Every tank stop will guarantee you giving a short briefing/answer on 'what the hell is THAT'! Thank you for adoring this 14yr old piece of madness.

I've bought and sold a lot of motorcycles, but I still have my 2007 Tuono in blue and white. I geared it up 2 teeth, and it will wheelie on command. With the Mivv GP pipes, it is one of the best sounding motorcycles of all time. It's an Italian Harley Davidson Sportster, and if you put a set of stickies on it, it's an absolute RIPPER.

Every one of your videos are an absolute joy to watch. Your presentation style is unique, and so full of charm, that combined with Monika's often quirky choice of royalty free background music, makes for some of the best entertainment in motorcycle vlogging. So you have a passion for not just bikes, but also cars, and you can appreciate engines of all sizes and power outputs, so I think a fab idea would be to combine your interest of all theses elements, and track down a Boss Hoss for a "Freddie goes extreme" review !

Hi I'm the dad of a thunder my 2005, so the first generation. I'm lucky enough to live at the beginning of the Cisa state road, in the province of Parma in Italy, An uphill and downhill full of fast curves and switchbacks that are absolutely breathtaking with my Tuono, the front end is a blade in the asphalt, the rear wheel is glued to the ground, the bends you make are pure emotion, for me the Tuono is La Moto. Nice review!!!✊✊✊

When you look at what a naked sports bike was built for, it's basically the thrill factor. The Tuono was always a great bike based on the Mille and Mille R. For me it was the Ducati Streetfighter and KTM superduke. These took Beast mode to the next level and 2 bikes i wish I had owned in the past. Now tastes have changed but on a country lane when one of these flies by it'll still make me think...hmmmm maybe one day. Thanks for more great content guys. It gave me fond memories back to a group I used to ride with when all the talk was naked sports bikes.

I had them for a few years. Great engine, mega sound, first-class chassis. the problem was the gas consumption , 8 liters and more. therefore very short range.

I live in germany in the black forest. For the twisty, small and fast streets the v2 is perfect. I tuned my tuono with parts of the rsv4. Nearly every part fitted 1:1. Shock by rsv4, handlebar of the 17 tuono, good brakes on, aftermarket quickshifter on, 2 easy v4 rims on. I would easily give this to a test of modern supernaked bikes

My absolute favorite motorcycle for canyon carving, I live in Malibu, California, USA, and I'll never ever sell mine. Just today, true story, I purchased a spare motor with 1100 miles on it just so I can keep mine alive for as long as possible. On topic, I've added full Ohlins front and rear, 100% carbon fiber body pieces (tank is ABS plastic OEM), 99% titanium bolts, lighter pistons with Carrillo rods, titanium valves, stock cams as well as stock bore and stroke. Mounted extremely lightweight wheels, billet Brembo calipers and T-Drive Brembo rotors, too. She's lightweight and snappy and just the most fun bike I've ever ridden and I LOVE that there's no ride-by-wire, TC, wheelie control, or ABS. I'm a retired professional road racer of 20 years and could get my hands on just about any motorcycle but I choose this one when it's time to go carve some hills. Great video, thanks for taking the time. PS, I have a few other pro racing buddies that I found out long after I purchased my 2010 Tuono that they too migrated to this Gen 2 Tuono 1000 R. The motor is made by Rotax in Austria, did you know? The power band on this motor is absolutely perfect for public roads; it's all meat with a healthy over-rev. Simply brilliant.

I did 1200 miles on mine this weekend, it's not at all uncomfortable. Probably the best stock saddle of any bike I've owned in over 30 years of riding street.

You've taken me back 30 years with this video. Had an Aprilia 1000 towards the end of the 1990s. All the things you noticed - chiselled out of rock , LOUD, great handling, very fast are true. Followed a Brabant Mercedes down to the south coast at speeds up to 170 mph (roads were quieter then....officer). I used to lie on the tank at high speed which I found very comfortable (but you can't see police cars following you). Feeling the V-twin coming on-cam was such a thrill - reminds you you're still alive. It was 100 per cent reliable, only two small failings: the clock kept reverting to Kms/hour and the sidestand was the worst in history. Several times I came out of the pub to find my bike on its side. Eventually I just used to lean it against the nearest wall. Took a girl from London to Birmingham on the back and she was fine, but she was only five-foot-four. You're right, the Triumph Speed Triple is more user-friendly but I eventually compromised with a naked Suzuki SV1000, similar to an Aprilia, but somehow easier to live with. Another great used buy!

Excellent video Freddie, GSXR next please👌?. However we'll intentioned, rider aids have also caused some riders to believe they are safe in all conditions, until that is, they find themselves sliding down the road because the system hasn't worked as well as they had hoped. My old ZX9R has no rider aids, 145bhp and excellent tyres, and can make progress in all conditions against newer bikes, using real seat of the pants coordination that we have all learned over four decades of riding. You are right though in your comment, become too overconfident, and you'll have to hope the catering is good at your local hospital. Keep up the good work 👍

Speed triple all the way for me. I knew two people who had tuonos from new and nothing but trouble with them. My speed triple is brilliant. In town its good out if town I can keep up with nearly everything. Best of both. Cheers Freddie.

I love it more than the speed triple. Once you get used to it, it's an amazing ride. Power, fun sound and great vibe all together. Now I also own a s4r 996 ducati monster...its a speed triple with the power of Tuono (even faster!)and quality and beauty of Ducati classic vibe.

@@Aangevinkt To be completely honest it's not that intimidating. Aside from a few incidental power wheelies (not real wheelies just the front wheel losing contact with the tarmac for a few seconds), the thing that took the longest to get used to was the heavier weight. It is really fast, and I'm not experienced enough as a rider to fully utilize it's capabilities. But below 7-8k rpm I would say it's very forgiving, above that it becomes a different beast. It's also a lot more stable in corners than my SV, probably due to the much more premium suspension. Coming from an MT09 (I've never ridden one) I would think you'd have to get used to the character of the v twin, but I'm sure you will. And it's not like the MT09 is a slow bike. But you would have to see for yourself. A warning though, it's very likely you are gonna be sold after doing a test ride (I was) . So decide that you want one before riding it :)

Super nakeds as a type have evolved so much in the last 10-15 years, crazy power outputs and electrickery. Back in the nineties a super naked was a ‘street fighter’ which in reality was a post crash Fireblade/GSXR/ZXR/Exup with renthal bars, a bolt on Scorpion can and no plastic, maybe rear sets and some dodgy anodised parts. 1200 Bandit new in 98 (100bhp, 115 with a can and filter ) was my first brand new bike after years of old ratters, felt like a rocket ship at the time and wheelied for England 😎

The Tuono is a great bike. I have had a 2007 tuono factory since 2014. I have put about 40 000 kilometers on it. It was a fantastic bike up to about 20 000 kilometers. Afterwards, I was frequently left on the side of the road with electrical problems...stators and regulators failing repeatedly. Having said that, it was an absolute blast when it worked. I have recently purchased a 2018 tuono v4. There is more power, but there was something special about having a lot of power without the rider aids that the v2 provided

I'm Italian, and I loved the description of the bike compared to an Italian! It's really true, the Tuono is a pissed off thug... and here with us it is a niche brand, but we know that the quality is at the highest levels ... in fact it is often compared with Ducati, even if Ducati is much more successful. Anyway, the test was beautiful, and I really enjoyed it! It feels like you're passionate, and you've understood the bike. Greetings from Italy 🇮🇹

Freddie I love that you go for all kinds of bikes to review and ride. I’ve never been a fan of sport bikes but that Italian vtwin sound just sings. I had the chance to ride a Ducati but my big Harley riding belly just hit the back of the tank and I could barely reach the bars. I think Monica deserves a steak dinner for riding on the back of that thing instead of a lemon aid .

Thank you for this proper video on this modern classic. I really enjoyed it. I too own this bike and bought it as a replacement for a more grown up version of my Honda RC51. Identical specs but more of a touring position. The sound track of these motors is what sold me. Who needs music when you have a Vtwin. Very unique machines with massive character. Only 5 percent of riders can say this bike needs more and fully take it to its limit.

Me , I would have to park it on the patio and just stare at a great work of art , lemonade in hand . Thank you both for the trip . I think I agree!😆🍋🏍🤩 If you’re coming to Tenerife for a holiday, I recommend Los Cristianos as it has everything within walking distance. If I were relocating full time, it’d be El Medano, El Duque or La Caleta🙂

Had 2.....loved them.🏍 The place to fully enjoy a Tuono is up over the mountain course I.o.m. That's their natural habitat......the fun factor with a capital F!. Any naked bike can 'bimble' only a few exel though, under full throttle through the gears and the Tuono is one. One of the best V twins ever made imo, keep safe bud 🏍

I owned a red and white 2008 gen2 for several years. Changed the final ratio to make it more drivable in the city, and installed after market lowering pegs. I also had the same cans as on your bike, but deleted the DB restricting tubes...It would set off car alarms in parking buildings! The rear brake was miserably ineffective, a common issue apparently. Anyway, despite the performance and thrill of riding the beast, at my age of 80, the discomfort got the better of me, and I passed the Tuono to one of my boys.

Owning 2 Gen1 Tuono's and have had 2 Gen2 Tuono's. You must deffinitly try the Gen1 if you have the chance. It's engine has even more character and it feels a bit more extreme. Also the fit and finish is a bit better

yet another cracking review mate and can totally understand why you suggested Monika travel in 4 wheel comfort, rear seat just a token gesture 😀 absolutely love this model of the Tuono and having been fortunate enough to throw my leg over both a 2009 and the absolutely mental V4 1100 factory I can understand your passion for this machine. As much as the V4 was incredible fun it was a hooligan on steroids and personally I would prefer a Speed triple. these aprilias are stunning machines and would create a smile like a Cheshire Cat for sure and the sound just music to the ears, especially the growl even more pronounced with the V4.😀👍👍👍

We never heard what Monica actually thought of the pillion seat! I appreciate bikes like this, and for actual riding they make more sense than a sports bike... But they aren't for me. I've had muscle bikes and, like you say, they are just too aggressive... If you are only going to stick to legal speeds then they make no sense at all. The bikes are set up for 3 figure speeds so never feel happy at 30 to 60 mph, it's like they are tapping their fingers and jabbing you in the ribs to stop pussy-footing about and get a move on. Maybe when I was in my 20s I'd have loved trying to kill myself on one of these. But not now. Sounds good though. I like a V twin!

Lovely review, I agree Tenerife is the paradise for gearheads in general, my honest advice is to keep your speeding comments for you, sadly internet today is a knife of two ends :) I had the 1st Gen, there is a lot to say about it, I loved it so much than it encouraged me to write all I know about it. I bought it for cheap in Switzerland (1600 Euro) with 12k Kms. just because it had a small bent front disc which I changed and also because of its beast reputation (for average eye it is a brutal uncomfortable unreliable Italian), which, after riding it for 35k Kms. proved them all theories wrong. I bought it for touring (yes touring) and I just rounded my choice for the following important features: 1) Available power to escape from complicated traffic and dealing accordingly in the Autobahn from Germany. 2) Flat seat area (the seat is flat, not curved like others like ex. the Triumph Triples) which would not push me against the tank and pull my crotch all the time. 3) Reliability, which at the moment of purchase was a question mark, but I did my research in internet, which states the following topics: it is a superbike engine meant to endure races, it is powerful as hell so probably average rider wont abuse of it as it will scare 90% of riders, it had low mileage and most of important thing, there were no bad comments about reliability other than typical Italian weakness (electrics) which were possible but rare) 4) it had to be 3 cyl or 2cyl engine, as torque is needed in alps pass more than for climbing, but for comfortable available power in low revs. What a surprise of a bike it was, really, for the advanced rider this rocket is a gift, so well dialed in, no stupid electronic modes with tendency to fail, excellent suspension, excellent powerful brakes, maybe the leg situation is a bit cramped but you could custom modify the pedal position cheaply. The gen 1 is far more beautiful in looks than gen 2 I must say, but for connoisseurs, the looks is not everything, the ride, yes it is. I didn't see this in your video but I must say, i owned mine with Leo Vince Exhaust, seriously, you need to hear this rocket reaching the limiter and then upgearing sometime in your life, it just feels orgasmic. Riding it at pace/low speeds with appropriate (maybe really delicate) throttle control does not feel jerky or uncomfortable like for example Ducati Monster which feels like it want to come apart. Turning in these feels planted but not more than for example the BMW R nine T, so confidence makes the real fast rider, this chassis inspired 85% of my confidence i'd say. Engine is, given though the fact it is a twin cyl. its torque in medium to low revs is godd but I still feel that at those occasions having it WOT it make more sound than actually pulls on the rear wheel, although when revs goes up to 8K then the bike feels like a rocket and you are thinking more earlier than late to reach for the brakes :) It can cruise at normal speeds with the help of an O-Ring between the gap on the throttle grip and the bar end, so you keep you happy wrist calm :) Engine heat dissipation is decent (so much is not a topic) also doesn't cook your crown jewels or legs (typical Ducati for ex.) That these bikes are around 4k Euro with low mileage (10K Kms +-) is a gift for those moto gearheads with low budget. About spare parts, at least in EU, you can get them easily through internet and then replace them yourself or with a good mechanic. Its mechanic is nothing niche or special about it. I had to sell it because i didn't have where to keep it, I love it so much that if I will be given the opportunity to buy it back the exact same bike, I'll do it yesterday.

A very good and honest review Freddy, l own a Honda ST1100 Pan European and a 2000 Mille RSVR 1,000 and you are absolutely correct if l ride the Pan l ride normally but on the Mille you turn into an angry silverback, once your you hear that exhaust note it’s very hard to ride sensibly, that said it’s way more fun to ride than my Pan. I followed a similar path, owned a Triumph Speed Triple in 2008 then bought the 08 Tuono there is nothing like these bikes. I have the 2020 Tuono Misano now and its fantastic. I have friends who have the H2 SE z and KTM 1290 and have ridden their bikes. While they are great bikes I still prefer the Tuono from a riding perspective for the type of riding I do.

Well done to Monika for getting on the Em[ire State Building pillion seat and remaining calm enough to do some filming. Bike? It's uncomfortable to ride. makes you pematurely deaf, you can'tt manoeuvre it especially uphill and if you don't treat it right it will kill you. Aprart from that it seems good and well-engineered. You're a relativelly young guy Freddie but it sounded like you had slipped into an age when it's easier to ride a moped (kidding) or at least the Bonneville is still a good choice for you and Monika. 😂

I test rode the Tuono 1000r the Super duke 990 and the street fighter 1098s in the same year. I can tell you the Duke and the Tuono are manageable bikes. The 1098s on the other hand, was terrifying. 155hp 375lbs. Half throttle wheelies and Im 220lbs. That bike isn't for men, it's for freaks.

The Tuono V2 is a bike that just wants to be ridden aggressively; all of the time. It hates puttering around. If you got into an arguement with your wife or girlfriend, your pissed off, and you had six bikes to choose from, that's the bike you grab the keys to go let of steam. Its not the fastest bike compared to newer bikes such as the KTM 1290R or s1000r, ect. But the thing will just push you to ride like a hooligan. Even when you are riding it hard, it just eggs you on to push it harder.

this is just not true, it has a wide Rev. Range (ok not like a Goldwing, but better then most 1000cm 4 Cylinders) smooth throttle Response a very nice riding Position ( for one Rider). You can go very fast with it , because it just has great Parts everywhere on it ( in the Time it was built some of the best) and a Stable Chassis, but you do not have to…

It depends where you live: here in the austrian Alps it is just great to have a Bike with good suspension, and good brakes, that is responsive to steer and stable at the same time. You can corner fast and smooth with it. you do not often go full throttle on a Mountain road but you enjoy the torque at low RPM. You do not ride agressive here, even if you ride fast…. I also own a GSXR 750 for the Race track as well as an Aprilia Mille, and the GSXR is the much more agressive bike, this Engine needs 10k RPM and more, and would be useless on Mountain roads.

@Freedie: as an owner of a 2009 Tuono V2 I have appreciate a lot your review. In the video you said that the Aprilia is longer than the Speed 2002 and have a wider wheelbase but, actually, the Tuono is 2025 mm long with a 1410 mm wheel base, while the Triumph is 2115 mm long with a 1429 mm of wheel base. This means the Italian bike is 9 cm shorter with a more or less 2 cm shorter wheelbase than the UK one. Have a nice road. :)

I have the Falco, same Rotax engine, slightly different setting, but the grunt, the power, and also the reliability, brought it to Griff in England after owning her for 5 years and her being 19 years old back then, nothing wrong, except a needle bearing in the rear. Downsides, if you could call them, hydraulic clutch, which, in city traffic is hard on the hand, and the grin you get every time, that threatens to split your face in half. Also, if you give her too much throttle off the lights you might loose the pillion.

I'm surprised you didn't say how stiff the clutch is. It's the one thing that puts me off riding my RSV. And the high foot pegs. And the low handlebars.

You can replace the clutch slave cylinder and get rear sets from app workshop makes the bike so rideable and even select neutral so easy

The clutch is very stiff, but it was equally as stiff on my Triumph Speed Triple, so I’d become used to it. But I agree with everything you say🙂

You need to get on the Speed Triple RR the red one, beautiful bike mental power. Owning the MT10SP as you know. That bike is a beast but I love riding it like I’m on a Bonny just taking in the scenery. Super naked bike can be a do it all bike. I slimmed my garage from 3 bikes to just one. Have a good Volcano hunt. 🤘

I had a 2006 Tuono 1000R.Great bike but a few drawbacks.Heavy on fuel,dodgy sidestand...bike can blow over in the wind,rear brake tends to lose all feel every couple of weeks and is a bastard to bleed.Brown connectors on lead from stator tend to overheat and melt and are hidden out of sight and hard to access.But a brilliant bike to ride!If you own one take care to service the swingarm and linkage every year as they can seize up.The genuine Aprilia spares are unbelievably expensive and can take months to arrive.Plastic fuel tank is £3,500 ...just for the shell.My bike was stolen in 2017 and I still miss that mid range surge of brutal power!But I have a Speed Triple 1050 now,which is a brilliant road bike,but not as mental as the Tuono...and uses about 50% less fuel!

Awesome review of a forgotten gem. Of the era, Id give the super naked crown to a Ducati Monster S4RS. However, costing more than 2x the Tuono, I don’t think it’s twice the bike. Tuono is an excellent substitute for anyone feeling like a nostalgic hooligan, that doesn’t want to deal with bi-annual timing belt jobs and 6k mile valve services.

While I would vouch for the first generation Tuono R Factory to be the best supernaked of the '00s, the king would probably be Moto Morini Corsaro Veloce, just because it is this large engine, most stylish thing ever. I think V2s are just in the league of their own, nothing else come close in emotions.
