Last year, GM Arjun Erigaisi faced GM Ian Nepomniachtchi for the first time in a rated game at World Blitz 2021. That encounter ended in a draw. Almost a year later, they face each other at World Rapid 2022 in Round 12. While the former and the current World Championship Challenger was at 7/11, the teenager was a half point ahead at 7.5/11. In this battle arising out of Catalan, Arjun gained an edge. Did he manage to increase his advantage or did Nepo balance things out? Find out all in this exciting battle.

Just check the squares in which players put the king at the end...if they are on opposite squares it's a draw...if they are on white or black...that means either of that color has won respectively.

This is what it takes to be the very best of the best. You're relentless. You want to improve in every possible way, no matter how miniscule. You want to analyse, pry, debate. And in doing that, you forget about your surroundings. But that is how you become the very best. It will be a long journey, but Arjun WILL be world champion if he just continues doing what he is doing. His drive and focus are unparalleled. Best wishes.

@NYKevin100
@NYKevin100 3 месяца назад
It's basically impossible for either side to make significant forward progress at 9:36. It's easier to see why on the analysis board, but in short, the Black bishop cannot simultaneously help the c3 pawn promote and stop the e4 pawn promoting, and all the pawns on the kingside are going to trade down. So Black stops White's passer, White stops Black's passer, and then there's insufficient material.

@evanf2711
@evanf2711 Год назад
8:22 why can’t nepo take on b4 then slide the king to d4? Seems like a winning move since you have a passer on the e file as well as a 2 on 1 on the king side
@ayushdxt
@ayushdxt Год назад
Because after Kd4, black can go Be1 and while loses one pawn, then black will eventually sac the bishop for a pawn and it’s a drawn king-pawn vs king end game.
@evanf2711
@evanf2711 Год назад
But if the bishop can only sac itself once, and if it just goes to e1 after kd4 then the king can just take the other pawn and now there’s 2 passers instead of just 1
@ayushdxt
@ayushdxt Год назад
read my comment again, there will be 2 white pawns and 1 black bishop at the end. The bishop will sac itself for 1 pawn and the white king is in time to draw the king+pawn endgame.
@evanf2711
@evanf2711 Год назад
I don’t see how white will have anything less than 3 pawns. The black king cannot stop the passer on the E file the king gets there in time to protect it. And there’s still the 2 on 1 on the queen side so even if the king leaves to go block the e file pawn white is still winning because of the 2 on 1
@ayushdxt
@ayushdxt Год назад
@@evanf2711 as suggested by you, if nepo takes on b4, then Bxb4, Kd4, Be1, Kxc4, Bxg3. White is already down to 3 pawns with the h4 pawn still under attack by the bishop and there is no way to save it.

You see that at the end, the white king is placed on the light square and the black king on the dark square. That is a sign of a draw. If the white king is put on a dark square, black is the winner, and if the black king is put on a light square, white wins.
@sn5953
@sn5953 Год назад
@@atisjojo1 Thank you for explaining this. I was wondering whether, when a player offers to shake hands, it should be considered as 'an offer to draw' or as a resignation. Your comment lays out the rules clearly. Thanks.
@AnandSivaram22
@AnandSivaram22 Год назад
@@sn5953 the offer to shake hands depends on the context really. Both players know the result of the game. If Arjun was dead lost and he offers a handshake it just means he's resigning. You're not supposed to offer handshakes when it's a draw offer but In dead draws the players know that it's going to be a draw and just offers a handshake.
@sn5953
@sn5953 Год назад
@@AnandSivaram22 Thanks for your reply. I am now wondering what if "the knowledge of the state of the game and where it is headed" differs between the two players at the time of offering the handshake (either because they are of vastly different abilities, or because of their ego leading them to believe that they are winning when in fact their position may be not-so-good [or vice versa], or because of other reasons)? Does the method you describe always guarantee conflict-free resolution of the game outcome?
