The Sega Dreamcast just celebrated its 19th birthday and in this video we look at the similarities its architecture has with the Sega Naomi - dedicated Sega arcade hardware.
We take an in-depth look at the Naomi hardware, its arcade games and understand how just "arcade perfect" the Dreamcast ports of these popular games actually were.

Also, some more fun facts about the NAOMI. Did you know the NAOMI also supports Dreamcast controllers, VMUs and Dreamcast games? The reason why the NAOMI games don't work on the Dreamcast is because they are encrypted. Hence why you need the security chip to make them work. The Dreamcast games however, are not and work fine in the GD ROM drive. While I can't verify whether or not the VMUs work the same with a Dreamcast game, I do know some arcade titles allowed you to plug your own VMU into the cabinet to either unlock extra content, or have exclusive content sent to your VMU for use back at home. Also, I think you may have missed a few things about the NAOMI. 1. The player input for the JVS standard is done via the two USB ports on the back of the machine. Unless your cabinet is JVS, you'll need the i/o board shown in the video. Also note that while the ports look like USB, you cannot plug other peripherals into them as they won't work. 2. For the Naomi 1, you can actually use the power from the Capcom i/o board to power the Naomi instead of using a separate power supply. You could also make your own cable and use an ATX power supply, though I would only recommend doing so if you know the pinout of both standards completely. Edit: 3. Just to note, for the Net DIMMs you need to have a Rev H BIOS on the Naomi and for the more 'questionable' route, you'll also need a Zero Key as while said game are decrypted, they still require some form of security chip to work.

@ArchinaGM
@ArchinaGM 5 лет назад
I can't say for sure as I'm unable to test it. Though I'd see no reason why it shouldn't work.
@crunchsixfoe
@crunchsixfoe 5 лет назад
Point 2 is incorrect. It's the Naomi 1 that doesn't work without the external power to run GDROM games. Naomi 2 doesn't need an external PSU for a GDROM setup. Also, I never changed my BIOS revision on my Net DIMM and all games worked fine.

The Dreamcast was indeed officially discontinued by Sega by the end of 2001, however, it was supported until 2007, the last licensed game released was Karous, on the 8th of March, 2007.

PowerVR worked far better in multi GPU configurations than scanline renderers like AMD or Nvidia's GPUs do. This is because PowerVR breaks the scene up into 16x16 tiles that are rendered in internal on die memory which are collated into an external buffer for display. Because breaking the scene up like this is fundamental to how the PowerVR GPU works it's a relatively simple matter to send every other tile to alternate GPUs for rendering and then collate them into a shared display buffer. The speed increase from adding additional GPUs scales much better than with more traditional GPUs that render one scanline at a time. There is very little additional overhead from splitting the scene between multiple GPUs with PowerVR because it's not doing anything it doesn't already do anyway.

I've worked on Arcade Hardware on and off since I was 14 in 1989. I have many fond memories of Naomi Games. Side note the Sega Chihiro (Xbox Based Arcade Hardware) and Triforce (Gamecube Based) both use the same GD Rom Drive as the Naomi.
@SuperKillerdreams
@SuperKillerdreams 5 лет назад
Tien_Gouki so are the Dreamcast ports of the sega Naomi games arcade perfect since the SEGA Dreamcast is a literal home version of the sega Naomi
@TrimeshSZ
@TrimeshSZ 5 лет назад
@@SuperKillerdreams Generally no - the main issue is that the Naomi has twice as much main and video RAM as the Dreamcast, as well as 4 times the sound RAM. This normally resulted in ports to the Dreamcast having simplified geometry, textures or both. The much smaller sound RAM also meant that the DC was restricted to using less sound samples than the Naomi - but this was partially offset by the ability of the DC to stream audio from the GD-ROM drive, which the Naomi couldn't.
@SuperKillerdreams
@SuperKillerdreams 5 лет назад
TrimeshSZ So are the ports still arcade perfect on the Dreamcast?
@TrimeshSZ
@TrimeshSZ 5 лет назад
@@SuperKillerdreams No. The gameplay is typically either the same or extremely close, but textures and animations are cut back to fit in the smaller video RAM.
@SuperKillerdreams
@SuperKillerdreams 5 лет назад
TrimeshSZ ok cuz I saw a video the other day where a guy compared the sega Naomi vs the sega Dreamcast version of capcom VS snk the first one and from what I saw he even compared the frames of animation in both games and they clocked out at the same, and everything from backgrounds to sprites were 💯% identical, so that right there had me convinced

@@TBasianeyes True, our modern-day tech should be able to down size the processing capacity of the Dreamcast into a portable sized board and we can house all the GD-ROM games in a massive SSD harddrive, or hell even burn them into a big ROM chip. So then the question will likely be: "How much will that cost to manufacture versus how many people will buy it?" IN the end, it is never about "yeah, we can do that because we're technologically advanced AF!" It's always about "So, how much money can we make here? What's in it for me and my shareholders?" Human greed. It's why we can't have nice things.

Melty Blood: Act Cadenza came out on Naomi. I remember seeing an actual MB:AC cabinet in Rochester NY when I visited there back in 2012... but it was out of commission with a bad power supply (the owner of Hammer Girl said it was a Japanese power supply using a step converter). I was so let down, it would have been the high light of my trip since I started the original Melty Blood fan translation projects into English, and absolutely felt responsible for that cabinet making it all the way to the US. lol

I always tell everyone that even though the Dreamcast didn't do too well as a home console, it lived on for several years up until 2009 putting up some great games in the Arcade. Word for word as you said; some folks didn't even know the existence of the Naomi or Naomi 2 (which is surprising). The hardware itself was truly way ahead of its time.

You have to make sure to set the Naomi hardware to the proper VGA khz setting output. Most arcade hardware outputs VGA at 15khz. Most consumer grade VGA sends out a 31khz signal. If I recall there are pin settings on the Naomi board to do that. After that you would have a better chance at HDMI output, but only with a standard VGA to HDMI adapter. The Naomi does not use the standard proprietary dreamcast AV port so the consumer VGA box wouldn't even work with the Naomi.

I’m so subscribed to this channel. So much knowledge and key facts to learn about those machines that seemed like magic in our younger years. Is there anything special regarding the GPU and rendering engine on these machines? 10M+ polygons is a lot, especially in 2000s. Now, is it polygons or vertices? Nowadays I only worry about total vertex and pixel operations and VERY VERY rarely about rasterizing and filling up the polygons contained in each group of vertices that define each triangle.

"There was nothing wrong with the games or the console just the fact it didn't play DVDs" So I guess we'll conveniently ignore the part about the Dreamcast console using cheaply made components, specifically the GDROM drive which had a high rate of failure? Don't get me wrong the Dreamcast is easily one of my favorite consoles of all time, but lets not sugar coat the fact that there was definitely a number of hardware related flaws outside of a lack of a DVD player that prevented the Dreamcast from having any chance against a much more premium, built to last console like the ps2.

Dreamcast had less buttons than a PS1 or PS2. This made some ports problematic, due to a shortage of input buttons. Mortal Kombat Gold, Soul Reaver, & WWF Attitude are all examples of this, which made some Dreamcast games more clunky than on a Sony console. The controllers were piss poor for fighters in general, too. I always used a dual shock controller adapter, but then you got the memory cards that go into the controller; Gotta have a special controller adapter with a memory card port for save data.

I originally bought the ps2 because it played dvds and was cheaper than a dedicated player

Watching this video was surprisingly helpful in setting up NAOMI/2 emulation. It makes sense when you see the real thing.
