Over the years there have been plenty of attempts to redefine what we need to get around. Most of them have become footnotes in the history books, with a few gaining popularity in busy, densely-populated cities across Europe.
But in Eugene Oregon, there's now a vehicle rolling off the production line that challenges what most Americans want in a car. It's got three wheels, seats two, and is officially registered as a motorcycle.
But with far more safety than most motorcycles and car-like functionality -- is the Arcimoto the vehicle to challenge and revolutionize the way we travel?
We headed along to the official celebration ceremony of the first Arcimotos off the production line -- and we got to chat to company CEO Mark Frohnmayer about what he hopes the Arcimoto will become in a world obsessed with SUVs.
Leave your thoughts below, and don't forget to subscribe!

@@ViperST989 I had the same thought at the start. I own a used LEAF. I bought it for 13,000 with 15,000 miles on it. But I think Arcimoto is at the time when Tesla was still building the original expensive Roadster. Eventually the FUV's cost will go down when they scale up and batterie technology matures and prices go down. It has some risks but the stock is dirt cheap. Most of my stocks (90%) is on TSLA. I bought it since it was %170. I bought FUV because it is only $2 and they don't need to do miracles like Tesla did to succeed. Do more research. Gali from Hyperchange bought some.

Yeah, an open vehicle like this is good only for warm dry countries... or summer days. But if a closed version with a heating system comes around... will it still be a motorcycle? Or will it then be considered a car with all the regulations a car is required to have?

It's the fact that it has 3 wheels is what classifies it it a motorcycle. Of course, there are actually many states that have autocycle classification on their books. The Arcimoto is working to make sure they fall under that.

Here's a thought.... I'm not a believer in the "save the planet" stuff that many electric car people expound. I do think they're a good idea for concentrating the polution at the central power plants where they are easier to deal with. They also remove the complexity of a clean burning gas engine. Having said that, I'd suggest a propane heater for cold weather. Something like a Mr. Buddy heater. Just slap in a new cylinder when needed.

This question is directed right at Mark. In the first part of this video it showed a young man helping an elderly lady out of the back seat. Have yourself or your engineers ever thought about making a seat that swivels 90 deg left and right to help those with slight disabilities dismount from your vehicle. I think with a few tweaks your vehicle will help another segment of the population maybe that was overlooked. Just food for thought, I'm sure you get an ear full of what if's every single day keep up the awesome work you make me proud to be from the Northwest.

Hallo! Thank you for a very entertaining show, and a new perspective. I have constantly have had thoughts about the range anxiety and the need for large cars, for all... We simply don't go on holidays every weekend. The form factor of these vehicles reminds me of the Uniti car, which is very much designed for Citilife, or suburban... (whereas the Uniti is a bit more designed for a chilly climate). The thing is that most of us don't need to drive 200 km on a daily basis, using the car for commuting, doing the daily shopping etc, and we certainly don't travel together (with the family, etc)... And I would really want to have a discussion (somewhere or somehow) about the real needs for most of us - or the typical situations where we need a bit of more range/less range and space. Again, thank you for a very refreshing show.

I live in Texas, which means if I'm driving, I'm going a really long distance. I'm interested in something like this, but a 100-mile limit is a huge no-go for me. If they made one of these, maybe with a propane-powered electric generator I could plug a 20lb tank into that could extend the range to 200ish+ miles, I'd be a lot more likely to get one. I have a friend I like to visit, but he's about 120 miles away. I couldn't even get all the way to him on a full charge.

It is, however, nice to see something like this finally come to production, unlike the Elio which has yet to materialize.. Perhaps Arcimoto's success will add impetus to Elio's efforts as this is an extremely competitive category after all.

Hi Transport Evolved, love the channel. its my number one place for unbiased news for all things EV. I hope your week is improving after all of the problems you've had in the last few days. and i will be sending a coffee your way as soon as I've posted this. I don't comment normally, and I certainly don't read comments, but i was a bit annoyed by something you said in this video. I am a massive Tesla fan, I do compare every EV that comes out to it and I certainly will continue to do so, but there are valid reasons for that. Note: when i now refer to design, i'm talking about the structural and engineering aspects, i personally couldn't really care about a massive touch screen or whatever the internals look like, because cars are cars. we sit in them for about 2% of our lives and they sit dormant the rest of the time. Tesla was the only company that designed and built an electric car from the ground up, this has resulted in the best overall solution for an EV, there is no legacy ICE chassis issues that result from trying to change over production lines on the cheap. They have stated their company mission very clearly, there is no confusion what the ultimate goal is here. There is no confusing company statements/adverts where they are trying to balance the blatantly better EV over their existing ICE vehicles. They understand that range is important for mass adoption. People are kidding themselves if they think 150 miles is enough for most car buyers. even if their daily commutes are only 20 miles, they just wont buy it as they will be thinking about the non standard days, e.g. seeing family at christmas etc.. They have understood the critical importance of battery care, both via physical design and software tweaks. i personally wouldnt trust nissan/gm/ renault to care at all once the vehicle leaves the forecourt (nissans rapidgate solution had to be done because it was a future sales disaster if left unchecked, also only time will tell what the solution means for the life of their batteries). They update their cars continuously, its unacceptable that in 2015 you had to take your car in for a software update, its downright negligent in 2019, what on earth are car manufacturers doing? it will save them money if they allow over the air updates, and they can get driving data back and sell it on and make more, not saying i approve, but this is the way of the world now. there are other reasons as to why i love everything tesla does but i wont go on. i also couldn't care less if Elon is a bit of a dick at times. the mission is the key. he will pay financially for his mistakes (private at 420, pedo guy, not wanting to pay royalties to the artist of a unicorn that was used in the software etc...) he's not locking kids in cages here, he's making stupid mistakes. Because i do compare every EV to tesla, it's why i do like what Rivian, arcimoto and now VW (MEB only) are doing. they do understand, and they are trying to get a well designed EV into the market and hopefully at a reasonable (ish) price. For completely different reasons, i was also really impressed by the indian company you visited and seen what they were doing, it fits their market, its a great solution, its not out of the reach financially of all but the few etc... they couldnt be further away from Tesla end product, but i believe their ultimate goal is the same and they are trying to do the right thing, and i'm all for that. Fyi - i think that arcimoto is on to a winner with this vehicle, but not the 2 seater that was the main focus, the 1 seater with the box on the back will sell like hot cakes in any city that has a polluting charge (which will be most capitals, and many more in the next few years or so), if your company makes deliveries of smallish items in them areas, its a total no brainer. e.g. deliveroo having said all that, i don't normally read all the comments, I have no idea what are the sort of responses you have to deal with on a daily basis, and I am aware the internet is full of hate and vile, so i hope this one is not too bad, and obviously i will always be watching, and continue evolving :-)

Then motorist who live in apartments, be it rent, co-op or condo, will be able to purchase one. Stations can charge by the quarter. 15 minutes full. I love the idea of a highway capable, little EV mini car like this, especially since I need the highway to get many places where I live. But living in Maine, I couldn't justify something one of these, even at a notably lower price, without doors and some form of heat. The season when I'd be able to use it is just too short. I'd have to worry about where to store/park it in the off season, which without heat or doors is easily five or six months of the year. I LOVE the idea of a little, fun, efficient EV mini car paired with a longer legged full size EV, but this just isn't there for those of us living above the Mason Dixon line. It's got the inconveniences of a car in terms of storage AND too few of the car advantages. I'd be more likely to add an electric motorcycle with good saddlebags to our plug-in cars and my ebike, before one of these, for the winter storage alone.

If Arcimoto wants to survive they need to iterate fast. Level 2 charging compatibility which means thermal management (use the frame as a heat sink?). Insisting that it's only for short trips limits your market. If I'm going to be delivering pizza in one of these from 4 to midnight every day fast charge is a must as full discharge is bad for longevity. Heated seats. Doors with windows that open. A way to hold your shopping in the back seat without going for the cargo version. If you could safely strap a surfboard to one of these that's a sizeable market as well.

I want one. Could replace the Suburban for 90% of trips. I do need doors. Utah winters would not be fun without them.

not hating on the idea... but what is the experience like when it rains? In the avg consumer use case. Is this supposed to be used in all use cases or is this the better version of a golf cart you can run to the corner store with?

Oh, yes! We want it to succeed, and with some doors and possibly a heater, it would be a good, most of the year, vehicle. In winter time, on slippery roads and in freezing conditions, maybe not so useful.

@@somewhat7 I know, but my garage would be a better choice for it in the winter months. My '96 4x4 Nissan Patrol will be our best choice to combat snow drifts and icy roads. It has been faithfully serving us with a minimum of maintenance. New brakes, batteries and clutch once, tyres, oil, filters, and some lightbulbs is all it has ever needed. Nothing else. Goes through the Norwegian version of the MOT without any issue every other year.

Needs a way to seal out the Occasional downpour of rain

There are lots of rain gear in motorcycle shops, outdoor shops (REI, etc.), and Walmart. I rode motorcycles for 40+ years and survived many rain storms and freezing temperatures. I want one of these. My drivers license still has a motorcycle endorsement.

I Live in ca. I commute every day. Was looking for a cheep eco friendly cost efficient ride. Elio was on my radar. This seems cool but it's still a bit too expensive and not quite car enough yet. But I like whare this little thing is going.
