Chell was already free at the end of Portal 1, they just modified the ending with a update when they started working on Portal 2, so that's not an excuse

I hope it's a joint game, combining HL3 and P3 into one game and finishing both stories with one ending. (You would switch between characters like the old lego games. Each character, Eli, Chell, and Gordon would each have abilities exclusive to themselves.) Hopefully it's gonna be a HUGE game.
Hopefully there will be a game at all also i havent played all the half life games but for as long as a combine exists the need for a half life 3 does (I only played half life and a bit of half life alyx)
"Portal 3 could ruin the franchise!" Valve is a company that is scared to make Half-Life 3, purely because they don't want to disappoint fans. There is absolutely no way Valve would make a crappy Portal installment, at the expense of the support of the Portal fans.
Have you seen the amount of times HL3 got almost made and then scrapped? That kind of crippling perfectionism should be reassuring enough that a Portal 3 wouldn't suck. Their perfectionism is too crippling! ...except with the online multiplayer games. We don't talk about those.
@@Twiddle_thingsWhat multiplayer games in particular are you talking about? Generally speaking, I think that Valve's multiplayer titles are almost as high quality as their singleplayer games. Unless you're referring to Deadlock, but that isn't out yet.
I see potential in that idea. Maybe add further horror value like his hallucinations and how his fragmented reality distorts ambience and gameplay.. And have an extra chapter that takes place around HL1 so you explore Aperture during black mesa incident..
From my View, If Valve is making Portal 3....they should focus On Doug Rattmann and his escape from the Aperture Science Hub. No Wonder why Doug was Left behind while Chell Escaped.....(That is the story definitely for Portal 3)❤
3:37 I think valve always intended on making a sequel. I think so because of the end credit song "still alive" in which we learn that GlaDos has not been truly defeated. And I think that they pulled a perfectly unexpected move when making her an ally and not the villain in Portal 2
I can't possibly imagine what Portal 3's story would even be like. Chell's story is finished, GlaDOS's story is finished and she's just testing with co-op robots now, Ratman's story was told in a comic, we know everything we need to know about the old Aperture thanks to that section of Portal 2, there's just nothing to add to it... though I trust they could come up with something good, I just can't possibly imagine what it would be.
We are simple mortals, so we can't think like they do. But VALVe writers are in another level so with no doubt they could even continue Chell's plot and somehow they would do something great with no doubt, like they always do
Where is Chell going to go after Portal 2? What if she decides to go back to Aperture, if she's got no where else to go? I'd begin Portal 3 with Chell encountering a robot who tells her he can get Chell to a civilization but they have to go back into Aperture to teleport her there, but it turns out the robot is an old foe of GLADoS and this causes her to punish both the robot and Chell for coming back. Chell spends the game getting through test chambers trying to reunite with the robot so he can tell her how to get home. And the game would end with Chell converting GLADoS to a human form with an android or clone body and then Chell reunites with a family member or someone who matters. Also the Rattman mystery should be fleshed out and resolved in this game too.
@@Kembervon Honestly I like the ending of Portal 2 BECAUSE we don't know what happens to Chell afterwards. She might not have anywhere to go but she got her freedom and technically can do whatever she wants if she's free from the player's control lol It's satisfying and leaves a lot for the player's interpretation. Asks questions that in my opinion are better left unanswered.
I know everyone doesn't have access to vr but I think that portal 3 being a vr game or maybe just having some form of vr support could be really cool. Seeing the portals in person would be absolutely insane
My personal idea for portal 3 is super dumb and would never happen, but it would be an amazing game. GLaDOS is experimenting in new portal technology for new tests, but something by goes wrong and it accidentally connects at an alternate universe aperture that tests on gravity instead of portals. And GLaDOS would maybe send a test robot to go into the gravity tests and report to her so that she can get new ideas for testing. And maybe the alternate GLaDOS is Cave Johnson that tries to take over Caroline GLaDOS facility for more power. The gravity testing could be a handheld gravity gun that can manipulate yourself and boxes gravity. I know this is super dumb but gravy manipulation could be an amazing puzzle game idea. This is so dumb lol.
I’ve actually had an idea for a game like this but I can’t code, I made something like it on some obby creation game on Roblox. You traverse through a lab and use different cubes of varying weights that only are moveable in certain gravity levels (I.e heavier cubes only move in lighter gravity) and the game gets progressively more hard until your device essentially gets supercharged, and for the finale you rip apart some evil AI by using your now supercharged device to completely reverse gravity and basically rip the AI apart. I can’t code so this probably won’t happen though :(
i also have a dumb idea: a spinoff that takes place in-between the portal games where you play as the cores keeping the aperture laboratories together (or pulling it apart) with 3 endings depending on how well you did (doing a great job, minimal effort, and destroying the entire lab on purpose)
im so tired of people's argument against portal 3 being "but portal 2 wrapped up chell's story". mate the game is called "Portal", not "Chell", a new entry could show us so much more of aperture and the portal technology
What other stories are there to tell after Portal 2? The last humans in the facility are dead, and Atlas and P-Body are no longer needed by GLaDOS since she has the birds now. Any future Portal games would have to be a prequel.

@@OmniversalInsect I assume you mean Portal 1? If so, there were definitely loose ends remaining. Just look at the credits songs. Still Alive is about how GLaDOS is, well, still alive. Want You Gone is about GLaDOS accepting that she won't be able to kill Chell, and letting her go free. The bots were unable to scratch the testing itch, so she had them get the humans from the Extended Relaxation Annex, who all died within a week of testing. After Art Therapy, GLaDOS has finally found the perfect test subjects: the birds. This means that basically every character arc is wrapped up: Chell's, GLaDOS' the bots', and even the bird's.

I've actually been thinking of a Portal 3 idea, it's not story heavy at all, and is mostly just tests. So, the idea is you play as those human test subjects from Co-Op's ending cutscene, and the basic idea is that it's just Portal test chambers, but there like a decent amount of pre-made tests, first, it's replaying the tutorial levels, just like how you do in Portal 2's first chapter, but the test chambers aren't dilapidated anymore, and back to their former glory. Then come in the pre-made tests, so let's get into the key mechanic! :] Replay Loop: Every time you die, you start a new run as another test subject. However, you skip the tutorial, it just kinda throws you back into it. After a randomized number of tests are complete (around numbers 17 to 27), at the last test, you get incinerated. Just like before the escape in Portal, except there's no physical way out. After you get incinerated for the first time, your next run will have slightly more difficult tests. With each incineration, your next run's tests get harder. Each difficulty level has around 70 or so premade tests, so that each playthrough doesn't get too stale. It's kind of like playing a roguelike but puzzles! It's pretty much just a skeleton of a concept, but there's a few extra notes I have down, like, maybe dialogue from GLaDOS could be her vaguely talking about events from the previous games, previous events in the story/lore, stuff like that!
“Chell’s story is done” The ending of the game was you finally get to the surface, and the companion cube is thrown out, then the game ends. Seems more like a cliffhanger than an ending. What happened after Chell escaped? Are there other humans left? I’d like to see what happens after portal 2, it doesn’t have to be its own game, maybe a portal 2 dlc or a secret cutscene, idk what it could be, but it would be cool to see.
If I saw a trailer where G man walks out of the hay fields at the end of Portal 2 and 'asks' Chell to find and activate the Borealis, I wouldn't get the smile off my face for a straight week
Tbh, I think they made games to demonstrate what you can achieve with modern technologies. This theme starts with half life by literally revolutionizing gaming, then half life 2 had it's killer physics engine, then portal showing off using physics in portal based scenarios, and even half life alyx can be seen as them showing off their VR technology like no one else has. But I do agree that I want a portal 3, and I definitely think it's doable. Most people don't seem to mention this, and I'm not entirely sure why, but literally at the end of the CO OP, you find a vat full of humans. I feel like that could be really useful in creating a storyline for portal 3. Maybe you play as one of those humans instead so Chells storyline can remain intact. Or maybe something completely different, either way, more portal please.
Well, that's basically a fact. Valve have said multiple times that they only want to release a half life title when they think it can add something groundbreaking to the medium. Portal is a different story, the first game was basically made by a group of interns as a stocking-stuffer for the orange box, and its success took valve by complete surprise, sparking a sequel (thats why portal 2 is of so much higher quality than 1, it had the whole studio behind it)
while I agree with this, and I know this is a nitpick and I'm sorry, at the very very end of the co-op story, Glados reveals that she made the bots one last time because she needed them for tests after the last of the humans died. She also needed them because a bird had made a nest in her control center.
@@Dew-se9hf I do remember this, but I also remember her lying a lot. Like I remember the first thing she says is that you're like thousands of years in the future, then later reveling that you've only been gone a week. She also said she lies when she's nervous when you have to reset the breaker on the reassembly machine. But who knows, it could be that she did kill all of them. And if that's the case then yeah you'd probably have to figure out a different way to continue the story.
@@ahumbledude757 In my personal opinion, half life alyx was the first time I remember seeing vr game taken so seriously, and showing off how immersive the tech can be when used in the right cases. It also helps close the gap between traditional gaming and VR gaming. Especially considering how long the game is too. It was definitely one of the longest singleplayer vr games I had played before. And also one of the most immersive. To me, half life alyx felt like a demonstration to anyone that if they wanna make a truly great VR game, they can. Imo there has to be an incentive to play a VR game because not only do you have to set things up IRL, but you gotta deal with specialized hardware and tracking and updates and all that. And I feel like I wouldn't do all that stuff just to play a mediocre game.
I desperately want a free roam game taking place in aperture laboratories. Bonus points if it's VR. Aperture is so big, horizontally and vertically, it would be such a fun free roam map to explore! Maybe you play as a robot working under glados, defending the facility against the combine?
I think Portal 3 could work if they don't use Chell unless its a prequel. The ending of Portal 2 felt like the perfect sendoff for Chell but maybe not for the franchise as a whole.
I want a prequel that takes place in the old facility we explored in Portal 2 with Caroline and Cave Johnson. At the beginning of Portal 2 you go through some of the chambers from the first game, so they could do a similar thing for the prequel, just in the old facility. We could find out more about the company's beginning, Caroline getting put into the body of GLaDOS, and whatever other stories they decide to add in. There's so much room to connect the story with the previous games but also give us new details that flesh out the story even more.
What portal 3 could be: A second facility, and guess what robot is there? A cave Johnson version of glados. This could still make sense after aperture desk job because in that game aperture is still hiring at that time meaning the “lab boys” could still transfer him to another robot.
Something that sticks out to me is the potential for a Portal game that doesn't primarily take place within Aperture. Fans have speculated a lot over the years about what it would look like to play around with a Portal gun outside of the lab environments designed for it. There's been countless mods adding in Portal guns into other games, fan films/animations toying around with the concept, etc. Part of the Portal 2 Co-op story is GLaDOS coming into possession of an incredible number of human testing candidates. Imagine for a moment a character creation process in which you name and design your own Aperture test subject, and then are thrust into the tests of Aperture the same as Chell once was. Very early on you shift gears from testing to trying to escape, and against all odds you actually manage to make it to the surface and escape Aperture, Portal gun in hand. From here, the story could go in really any direction, and it would no longer have any connection to Aperture or anything else from the previous two games. There's no chance of Portal 1 or 2 being ruined because this is now no longer a story connected to characters and events from those games in any meaningful way. I'm confident that Valve could find a creative way to make innovative puzzles that make use of the Portal gun in more familiar environments, and maybe even inject a survival element into it as you are tasked with using the Portal gun in clever ways to deal with enemies or stealth around them. Valve have always been innovators at heart, and I firmly believe that out of all their IP's Portal is the one with the most obvious potential for further innovations.
neat concept, but don't portals rely on moon rocks to work? I don't think you'll find many portal surfaces outside of Aperture. Maybe you can use it to pick up objects, that part of the portal gun doesn't rely on anything.
@@applesaucemaneatsmoss Lorewise, moon rocks are just used to reliably create stable portal surfaces. They're not necessary to create portal surfaces in general, which is why the tests in old Aperture from before Cave irresponsibly put the company into debt by buying up a ton of expensive moon rocks still work.
@@applesaucemaneatsmoss They could make up an explanation for it, perhaps a new prototype designed by GLaDOS for outdoor exploration or a malfunctioning portal gun that somehow works on all surfaces. It's essentially a cheap retcon but Valve has always managed to make it work, like how the ending of portal 1 was changed so there was a reason to carry on the story.
It’s so infuriating because there’s not enough games or really any games like this that challenge you and make you think… The characters that were created in this game are just a bonus.
BASED VIDEO. I've always used a lot of those arguments. My sister said once the plot was already ended in Portal 2, but cmon man, is VALVe, they ALWAYS make peak plots. I swear to God they could even continue Chell's story and somehow they could make it WAY EVEN BETTER than Portal 2, I'm totally sure of that without a doubt. Also imo Portal Revolution is very good but in plot terms is kinda uhh idk its ending was bad I think. If you want more Portal Mods/Fangames with better plots you should try Portal Prelude and Portal Stories Mel. Those both can surely be canon, their plot is very interesting and I think every Portal fan should play them!
I think it would be interesting to see a mix of both the half-life and portal games as the third installment. For the third game, we could see both games intertwine with each other. We'll play as Gordon in one section, and then in another section, we could switch and play as Chell (given the ending we get in portal 2), or maybe even ATLAS and P-body. And since they're intertwined, we can get a mix of elements from each side. Like using some pre-placed portals to get through an area as Gordon and then, either as Chell or the robots (likely surprised at first since they had no human contact prior), we could assist in fighting the combine. Since they're more used to only using portals, however, it'd be likely that we would see them help only passively or at least for a decent chunk of the game. That's how I see it at least, and I think it would be interesting, but it'd need to be executed perfectly in order to be done right.
In Portal 3 you should play as GLaDOS and guide a test subject through the time when Aperture demolishes, or guide the player to destroying GLaDOS and Aperture.
Honestly in my opinion the third game should also be the conclusion to the half life and portal series combined into a single game as a crossover where Gordon and Eli go to find the borealis and chell might be rescued from the combine by Gordon.
I must admit it, you have the point. That could be an interesting concept for the story to focus on all test subjects from Co-Op ending trying to escape from Aperture.
Not going to mention the sequel tease at the end of Portal 2 Co-op? Glados found tons of humans in the Aperture facility, ripe for testing. Imagine the stories that could be told.
I think due to the ending of Portal 2 being the most conclusive i think it has the most potential for an unexpected continuation Yes they could work around it, but making the third game take place after Portal 2 could be amazing An idea i had is Glados eventually missing Chell and quite literally rebuilding the entire Aperture Science complex to be fully mobile around the overworld, so it can find Chell, capture her for further testing while exploring the wasteland that was left from the Half-Life universe (or even it's aftermath! Could be a great tease to Half-Life 3) It could include many new mechanics, and a new perspective on the overworld as well as potential for a great story with such setup
I recently played Portal 2 for the first time with my girlfriend and it made me realise how much more I wanted of this world and these mechanics. What a great franchise.
I've actually thought about what the story could be for some time now. I don't like the idea of a prequel very much, so a sequel is what I'm going for. I decided to look for some details in Portal 2 that I didn't like and see if I could get something from that. The most major plot point of Portal 2 that I don't like is the deletion of Caroline at the end. It never felt satisfying to me and it felt like a last ditch effort to tie up a loose end. Thus, here is what I propose: Chell goes back into Aperture because she knows that Caroline is still there. Caroline is still there because GLaDOS is still there; present you WAS past you, and past you IS present you. This would say a lot about Chell's character, too, if it were to happen.
I had a thought the other day. I think valve might make a co-op half life 3 Portal 3 combined where shell and Gordon go on their adventures together. Let’s be honest time travel with portal devices is the only way to break Alyx out of stasis.
Not to mention they made a Portal game for VR called uhh Aperture Desk job or something and it was really well made and overall a great game. They're just waiting for the right moment or they don't know when to start it.
It's bound to happen as another game (world of goo) got It's sequel 15 YEARS after the og game and it's been 13 years since portal 2.. i have that feeling we will get that sudden comeback
For the sake and point of conversation, I just wanted to mention that Valve originally wanted Portal 2 to have a different protagonist, the unused Mel (that the folks at Prism games took to make Portal Stories: Mel about). They went with Chell because test players were confused that GLaDOS didn't recognise.

3:18 valve did not make half life Alyx for the sake of making it. Many don’t know this. Marc laidlaw was working on a company called project borealis which were working well in. They created level design, graphics and good physics. They were trying to finish off the chapter. Valve got wiff of this and created half life Alyx out of pettiness. That’s why the ending changed because it stopped project borealis in their tracks. You see them on RU-vid.
Maybe they just don't know what they could do to make it stand out? That'd be understandable, considering not only the massive amount of puzzle elements already present, but also those mechanics that the fans have made (such as Portal Reloaded's time travel mechanics). Regardless, I think it's clear there won't be a Portal 3. Portal 1 ended with a cliffhanger, making it obvious that a sequel was planned, but Portal 2 ties everything together. All the humans in Aperture's coma storage are dead, GlaDOS doesn't want to test anymore, and Chell is finally free. There's no better way for Valve to say "We're done, the franchise is in the community's hands now."

Idk how I feel about a Portal 3. On one hand, I want it. Desperately. And I would love to get more content. But on the other hand, a Portal 3 would DEFINITELY require Chell be the main protagonist again. She is LITERALLY the protagonist for the first 2 games and leaving her behind would be like leaving part of the game itself behind. And I don’t see any way for them to continue her story without seeming desperate. Chell is the CENTER of the Portal universe and we play as her and follow her story too long to just leave her behind. I suspect this is why so many Portal fanfics bring Chell back. That’s the main reason why I protest to a Portal 3. I do REALLY want a Portal 3, but I just can’t see them making one that would appeal to me or a lot of others.
What if they merge the Chell’s story and Gordon’s into a new story that takes place after the events of both stories? Wheatley could meteor back and tell Gordon about the resources at aperture so they’d have a heist for the portal gun?
I'm one of those people that thinks the Portal franchise shouldn't be brought back out of fear of it ruining an already perfect thing, but this video may have convinced me otherwise...
I think valve makes a new game only when they have a gameplay idea that is worth exploring, that's also the reason they didn't release half life 3 - they felt like it would just be more of the same. that's the difference between valve and other companies where story (or money mostly) pushes the company to release more game (Eg mass effect)
I will say this, if they are planning on making a Portal 3, then they should make Portal 3 BEFORE they make HL3. Here's why. . . Half Life 3 should be the absolute conclusion to EVERYTHING in the whole Half-Life/Portal universe. Or at the very least make it the prequel to the whole Portal franchise or. . . here me out. . . it takes place in an alternate future and we see G-Man talk to Cave Johnson or something. This is probably another reason why people are saying "just make HL3 the true conclusions to everything" since we are getting Aperture-tech in HL3.
Sadly the writer of portal 1 and 2 came out a while back saying that portal 3 just isn't possible because valve is not a massive company like people think they are. They have to worry about managing dota, csgo, and steam and that's already a lot for them. And making portal 3 would stress them out too much. I would love to see it though if it ever becomes possible. They said that they had tried making it multiple times and even has a good starting point but they just dont have the employees for it.
I do wonder what features and game mechanics could be in Portal 3 which are not already in Portal 1 and 2. Just 'players get to play new puzzles' is not a good enough reason for Portal 3's existence, since Portal 2 already has the community testing initiative.
2:26 This actually isn't true, at least according to a dev. There was an interview with a writer (Erik Wolpaw) who actually rallies for a Portal 3 as well internally, but 1)explained that it's not getting off the ground without support from other people first due to Valve's desk-with-wheels structure, and 2) pretty unsubtly alluded that profitability was at least in part a sticking point to higher-ups. You can find the interview right here on youtube, recorded in 2022. At about 9:40, the interviewer tries to make a small case for the hype and potential profit of a 3rd Portal game, and Wolpaw agrees whole-heartedly, but says something along the lines "but is it Counter-Strike money? But not all games need to make Counter-Strike money, you know, Gabe".
Here me out. You know something- an environment and concept- that Valve HASN’T touched on very much? It’s something that’s appeared briefly in both Half Life AND Portal: Outer Space. And a Portal game needs, well, portals. What location do we know of that for a fact has portal surfaces in outer space? None other than the freaking MOON. A Portal 3 that takes place on the lunar surface! If Valve wants to achieve something with our tech today, I’d like to see what they can do with a no-oxygen, low-gravity setting.
Unfortunately that is just not how Valve works. They would need a good reason to make another Portal game. Half-Life pushed FPS storytelling, Half-Life 2 pushed physics and graphics forward, Half-Life: Alyx is a well made VR tech demo. In my opinion it''s most likely that a spiritual Portal 3 is going to be a DLC or sequel to Alyx (dealing with borealis portal tech). Imagine Half-Life combat against the combine while using the portal gun.
I really want the portal one cores to come back in portal 3 if it is ever made, also if it is ever made, Wheatley should fall back into the earth randomly in the game, into aperture, and the turrets should help us in this game, I haven’t finished portal two yet, but assuming Glados becomes back into her normal form, from the start of the game, maybe in portal 3 they should add me continuing this comment at 3 likes
I personally find that Portal Stories Mel, Tag The Power Of Paint, Portal Reloaded, And Portal Revolution are sufficient enough as portal sequels. Sure they aren't canon to the Valve story for portal, but they were so well made by dedicated fans of the franchise that I feel that they should be canon. But that's just my opinion.

SPOILERS FOR PORTAL 2 I think there shouldnt be a portal 3. Atleast not with chell and not continuing the main story any further. What they should do is a prequal featuring the 1960s aperture, when it was at its best and with all the money needed for the crazy test ideas they were coming up with. Cave Johnson would fill in the role as GLADos and be the testing announcer. Some ideas: Have the halfway point of the story be a cryogenic experiment freezing you for decades and unfreezing you in the 1980s-1990s when aperture is bankrupt and starts to branch off into artificial intelligence. The ending of the story could make Cave Johnson a villain. Because you were a test subject during the time when aperture used astronauts, war heroes and olympians you would be a prime candidate to make into a personality core, resulting in you being betrayed and left for dead. You find a portal gun and make your way to the older areas of the aperture facility, discovering all kinds of inhumane testing conducted by aperture science innovators. The ending of the game is you dying to a neurotoxin somewhere in original levels of the facility. (This could also be where Caroline, later GLADos gets the idea of using neurotoxin.) Cave Johnson then shuts down these areas to prevent further discovery by unwanted individuals. Basically add a bunch of lore to fill in the gaps between Aperture Science Innovators and Aperture Laboratories and make Caroline being forced into GLADos/GLADos killing the entire facility the ending cutscenes so it sets up the story of portal 1. Potential problems: The story reveals from portal 2 are revealed immediately in this one. But the ending of portal 1 is also revealed in portal 2. Maybe include some kind of warning before the game begins to play portal 1 and 2 first
I don't think portal needs a new story driven game, especially when half life had references to aperture. Something like a rougelike test spree game could be fun. Get through as many tests as possible without failing. Fan created tests could be implemented to keep things fresh. I feel this would be a better choice for a portal 3.
To me theres only 2 ways to do it: 1- make it a prequel and have rattman as the protagonist. This one is complicated, as it would be limited by the timelines of both portal 1 and the lab rat comic. 2- (my favourite) portal 3 follows eli vance and gordon freeman as they explore the borealis, which would either be a standalone facility or would teleport them to the main aperture facility, and glados would be ecstatic to have new capable test subjects. Ideally it would explore the relationship between black mesa and aperture, and the hints sprinkled throughout the expanded material that black mesa actually stole its technology from aperture (maybe there'd ba a jab at gordon for being another mute protagonist). I get its a bit weird to make the sequel to HL2 be a game in a different series, but honestly i dont think theres anyone out there who doesnt know the story of both series
