The Aristocracy series originally aired on the BBC. Each episode explores a period in the history of Britain's noble classes. Focusing on the decline of this class in the modern world, each tape offers a glimpse into a world only the privileged are intimately familiar with. In this particular episode, viewers explore a golden age for England's aristocracy. Around the turn of the century, Britain's aristocracy owned 80 percent of the land and dominated Parliament. The program features interviews with current dukes and duchesses, as well as with leading historians. ~ Rob Ferrier, Rovi
BBC:
The Duchess of Devonshire, Sir Charles Wolseley, the Marquess of Anglesey and others describe their ancestors' lifestyles and finances.

In the end, an inefficient management of land, combined by their own excesses with the addition of an increased public awareness of aristocracy excess justifying increased tax burden on the landed aristocracy, brought them down.

What isn't mentioned is that agricultural imports, much of it from the USA, led to the decline of the landowners' wealth. On top of that, land ownership was no longer a path to wealth, instead, factories were.

Steven Torrey...you're right, with an additional comment. After WWI, and the remaining "lower classes" were allowed to vote and they voted for the Labor Party, whose leader had enormous contempt for the aristocracy. George V, in order to maintain his position without turmoil, went along with the new Prime Minister and stabbed his aristocratic supporters in the back by agreeing to the estate taxes which ruined a lot of dynasties (paving the way for the future). I'm not British, so I'm neutral.

In the end, he lost a lot, referring to The Marquees of Anglesey... Well, that is an understatement if you're having your entire state been auctioned by debts you owe!!! I mean, if you're having the clothes you owe been auctioned!....

I think there's a great deal of wisdom in what you say. Having a bedrock institution like the aristocracy, even in a minor form, acts as a solid stable backbone, perhaps, when times are not so good. At the same time there's no doubt that they were, especially in this era, extravagantly excessive in nature which is something to be avoided. The quote, by the way, is Sir Winston Churchill's - fitting from a descendant of the Duke of Marlborough.
@NorceCodine
@NorceCodine 6 лет назад
Churchill didn't inherit the title (his step-brother did), and there was never much money, only enough to support his mother - Churchill made his own money from the age of 18, as a reporter for newspapers, at the same time being a soldier. That's why he became so resilient and tough as nail.

Interesting is the pronunciation of Londonderry as Londond'ry, with the stress on the first syllable. No wonder the locals want it called Derry.

it is really interesting... How Jews have been ruling, it is pretty much clear from within the english government, was it an english idea? why it couldn't survive so long? does having 500 kings make lots of troubles? Has it been replaced? and if it does, could the replacement last long? Has someone thought about an alternative? How huge the difference between the three alternatives (1) the english (2) the german (3) unknown, the list is too long and very narrow, it is like wining a prize, 150 candidates and only one will make it.

I think the destruction of aristocracy went a bit too far in the UK. It is always beneficial to have strong institutions against democratically elected ones, which we now have seen as being less than perfect. Democracy is only something like a hundred years old in most of the developed countries and we are still experimenting. The standard of living improved dramatically for all classes and the society as a whole is a much better place. But we have lost thing or two as well.

You are right.If they had some reform and lasted it would have been a much better Britain than the one we see today.The fact that Britain still carries on is due to its landed aristocracy, and of course the Monarchy ,whose holdings are still substantial.

@@grateful1850 I am so sorry for being negligent... I did not realise that I had a response to my comment. It is not easy to be an aristocrat. He has to worry about keeping his own estate, and he has to be careful not to appear lazy and greedy.

The term: "eccentric" is reserved for the crazy aristocrats hwo can't fathom that their money is not limitless unless there's an illegal money printer in the basement! Crazy is crazy (is this some version of Porphyria?)! The rest of us, regular people, would have our home and/or any assets repossessed (less the home if it's paid up and there's the "Homestead Law" as we have in Tx). People will and have always been greedy...

You do know, hat the womb sits Below the waist? So one can easily carry a pregnancy,disquised in such a grand robe.... I , for one , does not show , until the 8 th month of pregnancy....and a pregnancy takes 10 month, for the most parts.... Not only 9🙄 One pregnancy month being 4 weeks....and can take up until 42 full weeks, in all.... leaving only 10 full /normal weeks left of a whole year....equal to 2 month.... How people got a pregnancy to Only take 9 month, is a Riddle......😬 Perhaps it was because many babies were born about 9 calendermonths after the wedding??? You can discover a pregnancy about 2 weeks after ovulation...if your menstrual blood, doesn't come.... Many brides were/are in early pregnancy 😉 So...when in the 7th month of pregnancy, you might still have 3- 4 month left, until Due day🥳

What did you lose? The opportunity to lick the boots of aristocrats? As far I am concerned, good riddance to hereditary aristocracy...The perfect system would be a true meritocracy, which unfortunately doesn't yet exist.
