Warning: this episode contains descriptions of injuries.
Myanmar is home to one of the deadliest, most intractable civil wars on the planet. But something new is happening. Unusual numbers of young people from the cities, including students, poets and baristas, have joined the country’s rebel militias. And this coalition is making startling gains against the country’s military dictatorship.
Hannah Beech, who covers stories across Asia for The Times, discusses this surprising resistance movement.
Guest: Hannah Beech (www.nytimes.co...) , a Bangkok-based reporter for The New York Times, focusing on investigative and in-depth stories in Asia.
Background reading:
• Rebel fighters have handed Myanmar’s army defeat after defeat (www.nytimes.co...) , for the first time raising the possibility that the military junta could be at risk of collapse.
• What’s happening in Myanmar’s civil war? (www.nytimes.co...)

I visited Burma a few years ago as a tourist. It's a beautiful country with wonderful, welcoming people. I wish they could have peace.

I'm sorry to hear what's going on in Myanmar ... I hope Myanmar manages to sort things out. I also feel for the refugees and innocent civilians displaced by war. In my humble opinion, refugees and displaced civilians fleeing or caught up in the civil war in Myanmar should be able to relocate and resettle over to the vast resourceful Australia & New Zealand in the Asia-Pacific region. In fact, around 90% of Australia/New Zealand are completely empty. Besides, the vast majority of the population in Australia/New Zealand, tens of millions of Europeans were from all over Europe brought in over to the Asia-Pacific region. Colonialism and Colonization are evil things done by evildoers.. Here in Singapore, a tiny island with 6 million souls lives like sardines in a can, elsewhere in nearby vast bountiful Australia which is ten thousand times 10,000 bigger with a mere 27 million inhabitants. A similar situation in tiny and packed Japan, which is running out of space and land. Anglo Western/Christian Europeans Colonization of, - North America & South America, - Siberia & Far-East Asia, - Australia & New Zealand in Asia-Pacific. Europe for Native Europeans, - Africa for Native Africans, - America for Native Americans, - Asia-Pacific for Native Asians-Pacific islanders. 🤷 The two most sacred Christian doctrines are, -Thou shalt not kill. - Thou shalt not steal. 🤷 The fact that there are over 40 nations/territories in Europe for the Christian Europeans to Colonize. Why Native-American land? Why Asia-Pacific land? 😔 🤷

Incredibly Sad yet inspiring...peace and love seems to be so difficult. I traveled through Burma in 1996 on a bicycle...you could on stay 2 weeks I think it was so I could not do everything I had wanted to do. I remember clearly having a conversation with a taxi driver who was at one time a professor in the University. He spoke in whispers as if the military could hear even in the taxi. He told me how bad it was in his country and the hopelessness of their situation. He was a peaceful man,.but told me that sometimes you have to fight...it seems we are on a ''proving ground'' when reincarnated on Earth. I just pray that these forces for freedom are not hijacked by a charismatic dictator or capitalism at its worst. The two young men have that 1000 yard face that happens to the young who have to fight...they have aged and their youth is gone but they look tough and committed. One is wearing a Christian cross which is rare in this Buddhist country. Hanna you are a very Brave journalist and I applaud your Pluck!

Truly inspiring this time round for a nation beset with repeated coups and political turmoils since independence. Youths are stepping up to fight versus some in Ukraine are hiding from conscription 😢

As I listen. To Hannah’s voice I’m staring at the face off the young man in the back of the pickup truck hold in a semiautomatic rifle with a large magazine. Where is he going now? Is he still alive?

I remember reading accounts of an American GI during the Vietnam War. He found a notebook on the body of a VC after a skirmish filled with writing in different colored pens and was so intrigued that he kept it. Eventually, he got it translated and learned it was filled with poems and love letters. At that point, he realized he'd been fighting on the wrong side and that the US could never win against an army of poets and artists because they cared and had something to fight for.

That "army of poets and artists" was the one that started the war by invading South Vietnam. Don't forget that.

@@michaelzhang9953 The book is called "Patriots: The Vietnam War Remembered from All Sides". That particular story was just one of dozens presented from many different perspectives. The main take away I got from the book was that every individual at every level participates for different reasons. A senseless collective act towards the singular goal of mass death perpetrated within the fog of war.

More attention should be brought to this dictatorship, just shows how little we truly care about injustice

There's no oil, cobalt, gold, etc in Burma...they just might be lucky that ''we'' don't care in view of the other places ''we'' have cared about and how badly it went.

It is Russian PMCs Wagner. They invaded Myanmar in 2020. They staged a military coup in Feb 2021 and started a sadistic genocidal war on the indigenous peoples of Myanmar.

Absolutely incredible. We have to promote and support all fighters for democracy be they in Myanmar, Ukraine or even Israel, where Arab Israelis are increasingly joining the IDF. We have to stand against the fascist wave in Russia and Iran but also France and the US.
