Two classic episodes featuring Sammy Davis, Jr., Ellen Degeneres (1989) and Sandran Bernhard and Public Enemy (1992) plus a bonus clip with comedian Mario Joyner.
-----
The Arsenio Hall Show was an American syndicated late-night talk show created by and starring comedian Arsenio Hall. There have been two different incarnations of The Arsenio Hall Show. The original series premiered on January 3, 1989 and ran until May 27, 1994.
Hall had been a host on The Late Show, another talk show on Fox, after the dismissal of Joan Rivers. He was given a 13-week run, during which he became unexpectedly popular. During the monologue of his final appearance as host, Hall stated that the reason he had agreed to only do 13 weeks was because that was as long as he was able to stay, as he had plans "to do other things."[11] He subsequently began working on the Eddie Murphy vehicle Coming to America. He ultimately signed with Paramount Television before Fox finally decided, after the fact, that it wanted to keep him.[12] Hall had a fairly long connection with Paramount before this, having been the in-house comedian on Paramount's weekly music series Solid Gold for several years and serving as a co-host for its final two years.
Arsenio was one of two late-night shows to premiere in January 1989; the other was The Pat Sajak Show on CBS, hosted by longtime Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak. Unlike Sajak, Hall benefited from prior experience hosting a late-night program, especially when compared with Sajak's lack of emceeing experience outside of his Wheel duties. Hall also had a clear demographic to serve (whereas Sajak was targeting the already-taken demographic that was watching Johnny Carson), and his show premiered exactly one week before Sajak's, giving him a head start. While Hall's show became a near-instant hit, Sajak's show was a ratings flop and was canceled after little more than a year. - Wikipedia

It did come back a few years ago, but it was cancelled. Arsenio worked around 1990, as it was everything Carson wasn't. It was a moment in time and cultural touchstone that could never be replicated.
@blueblur2273
@blueblur2273 3 года назад
@@RichV20 Yep it fit perfectly in the 90s where you could be more spontaneous with the direction of the show and more authentic. It doesn't work in today's ultrasensitive era where everything is planned, formulaic and political.
@drewzuhosky6826
@drewzuhosky6826 3 года назад
@@RichV20 The interest was high when the reboot began (his first night back saw the show outpace all of his competitors that evening,) but the audience decreased after the opening week. Further, the head writer of the show left his position a month and a half into the run, forcing the show on hiatus. Even though the second version of _The Arsenio Hall Show_ was renewed for a second season in February of 2014-- complete with a then-newly-retired Jay Leno congratulating him on getting picked up, the syndicator eventually reneged on its decision and announced that the show was canceled at the end of that May-- all while Hall and his team were on a celebratory vacation for the renewal. Tribune Broadcasting caught wind of some stations' plans to move the show to as late as _2 a.m._ for the second season-- prompting the move to cancel the show. After getting canceled, no further episodes were shot and the show went into reruns before fading away the following September.

I can't stress enough how fortunate I am to have been coming of age during this period; Was in junior high-sophomore year in H.S. during show's run. It's a treasure to have seen all these Legends/Icons in the prime/at the height of their careers.

@Paul Kersey ADR to all the legends of the 60s/70s, no doubt, but even if some of them were past their prime or whatever, the fact that they were asked/booked to be on the hottest night show at that time gave them an edge; even a surge in relevancy, dare I say. In addition, I wasn't focusing on just comics.

For a man who was never formally educated and didn't learn to read and write until he joined the Army and got mistreated, he was the true definition of classy. I consider Sammy the original one name act. He wasn't the first black entertainer but, certainly had a major role in opening the door for future black artists as the biggest of the era paid tribute to him on his 60th anniversary special. I can never watch a Sammy video without a smile on my face.

This is where Sammy Davis, Pearl Bailey, and Nat King Cole (just to name a few) stayed when black people were not allowed on The Strip and had to enter the occasion or hotel through the back door.
