I've watched this movie several times since the mid-80's, and it never gets old. Definitely inspired me to take Kung Fu lessons once I got a little older..
Agree, this really showed his speed and agility better than his later movies. When he became a bigger star and got more control over his fight scenes, he relied on extreme dramatic angles, slo-mo, use the same helicopter kick 6 times, etc
You can see how happy and excited Scott is here speaking to Kurt. That's what happens when you truly love something as a kid, it never goes away and it stays in the heart no matter how old you get.
Its true..i loved the final fight in 1 & loved cynthia Rothrock in 2...still pissed she got killed .😂😂 loved both movies forever & im 44 for the Record..😉😉
The Van Damme story with Kurt calling him to ask him about the sequel was absolutely hilarious. Its great to finally see Kurt again. He was a huge inspiration during my childhood. I still own No Retreat No Surrender on VHS that I bought back in the early 90’s. Thank you for this episode Scott🙏
@@ZECAHRIAH313 Haha agree. Even during the 80s there was a certain 80s atmosphere to rental stores. The smell hit you as soon as you walked in. It was a unique nice smell lol.
@@brendanduffy2367 i think about when RJ comes in and hes basically practicing alone and talking to no one and RJ just kinda blows it off. Like did he want Bruce's help so bad that his own mind made it happen? Taking the lessons he was learning from the books or improving on what he already knew and was influenced by? Im pretty sure all us martial arts nerds can build some pretty sick training regimens based on shit we all saw in movies.
Van Damme totally did the Stallone lip thing when his character was angry. If you’re not quite sure what the Stallone lip is, it’s when the bottom lip stretches and reaches down like your trying to touch it to your chin.
My little brother, Joey and I used to watch this movie together over and over again. I was a huge Bruce Lee fan and was devastated when he died. And I introduced my brother to these kind of movies. When this movie came out it became one of the movies we could bond over watching. To this day the movie is remembered fondly by both of us. Thank you. We loved you in it.❤😊
I remember this movie, (No Retreat, No Surrender) By Corey Yuen, Kurt McKinney was a Taekwondo practitioner before starring in this martial arts movie, the 80's were a very good generation.
My favorite movie no retreat no surrender i am kosovo Albanian and in my country was war its bad and i was little i watch this movie love ❤❤ bring me memory kid :( Special thanks Mr. scott Adkins
@@Robocoppat hey robo is it the usa version thats your favorite as well? In my opinion the usa version of no retreat no surrender is superior. The training music.of the trainining. Stand on your ownnnn. Theres no retreat theres no.surrender!!. Wondrr when the usa ver gets a dvd. Only on vhs sadly Love vandammes villain music in the end fight.and how it.kicks in as he gets jason. Jasonnnnnn!! No Retreat ...No surrender!!
@shel0016 "NO RETREAT...NO SURRENDER " MY FRIEND. I'm in the USA and I've always watched that version. I couldn't tell you how many times I've watched this movie. Hey Kurt did the guy who played your dad in the movie have any martial arts training?. ~~~~~NO RETREAT ~~~~ ~~~NO SURRENDER ~~~~
I used to love No retreat No surrender. I used to come home from my karate lessons and watch it. Me and my friend used to watch it at his house as well, then train afterwards. I still watch it to this day. It would be great to see you and Kurt in a movie together, Scott. Really hope it happens in the future when things are back to normal 👍
I hope Kurt knows just how important a film this was for a lot of people growing up. I saw it when I was about 11 or 12 in the late 80s, and for years it was my favourite film. I agree with Scott in that Van Damme played second fiddle to Kurt in this film (for years I always saw him as a villain due to his role as Ivan), and I always wanted to be Jason. I grew up with the UK VHS cut of the film ,which is slightly different to the other version, but either way, it was a genuine landmark for me as a young boy. I'll go as far as saying I even prefer it to Rocky as an overall viewing experience. Also, it took me years to find any love for the sequels because they didn't have Kurt in them. I like them now, but back then it was a sore point. Anyway, thank you Kurt, and thank you Scott for validating all us old 80s/90s VHS martial arts film junkies. Video rental night was special, and these films made it that way, so it's great to hear from all these guys again.
Same with me! I remember i was very confused when Van Damme did later a movie when he played twin brothers, i mean a double role. One of the twins looked exactly like Ivan Kreshinsky, i mean the hairstyle etc. And yes, its not negative, but Van Damme like Dolph Lundgren are simply awesome as Ivan Kreshinsky and Ivan Drago! It is always funny to me when i see Jean-Claude as Frank Dux in Bloodsport or Dolph as He-Man in Masters of the Universe...since they played such bad ass villains in NRNS and Rocky 4.
@@javi9436 I agree. The acting is even worse in the extended cut. There are some funny scenes between R.J and the fat guy, but the original cut is still my favorite.
This movie is van glorious. I started wearing ankle weights while running from watching this movie when I first got into martial arts. Lol. " Stand on your own. There's no retreat. There's no surrender ".
It's such a privilege to see Kurt Mckinney after over 30 years. Back in 1986, all kids were inspired by his Jason Stillwell character as well as Bruce Lee's spirit. But most of all, the soundtrack was very motivational. Even today, "I still hold on the vision in my eyes"
That film got me in to Martial arts, and Bruce Lee. Fortunately I was living in Hong Kong in 1986, so I immediately as a 13 year old I joined a club & went to Sifu Lee's former home. Good memories ☺️
As corny as this film is at times, there are only a few films that had such of an profound impact on my development as No Retreat No Surrender. I am how I am because this movie exists. So great to see Kurt McKinney on the show. Thanks Scott!
Yeah and it ruins the film. Way too many rubbish scenes left in , and not so great music score. The better shorter UK /export version is my fave, thst came out on bluray recently I think, right?
Wow. Kurt McKinney. Karate Tiger is one of the best inspired movie ever i seen. Hold on to the Vision from Kevin Chalfant is always my Song for Training. Best wishes to Mr.Adkins and Mr.McKinney. thanks for all
Scott Adkins is an inspiration to me as an aging martial arts Enthusiast. Not that he’s old. But he’s a little bit older than me. So I’ve got no excuse to slow down.
One of my all time favorite movies as a kid. Its right up there with Rocky 4 and Bruce Lee Game of Death. Takes me back to the good old days when I was a kid.
No Retreat No Surrender is - an will always be - a classic! It was one of the movies that brought me into Martial Arts. Oh, and "Hold on to the vision" is still on my training playlist =)
Yeah, with Matthias Hues, What a sequel,as much as i was gutted that Kurt McGinney wasn't in the 2nd one, when I first saw Loren Avedon fighting,I was like "yeah, this dude is good". Then there is Cynthia Rothrock who was just a bad ass anyway, I must've watched this movie over 50 times as a kid,I was hooked
One could say its 'just another film', but truth is it influenced me to stick with Taekwondo although I wasnt good or talented at it. It taught me that things dont come for free and you need to work hard to achieve things. I used what I learned in private life, at work, everywhere. So yeah, thanks for 'just another film' that shaped me to be persistent in life!!
I been waiting a long time for this. Interviews with Kurt are rare and hard to find. This will be the definitive interview i been looking for, i am sure of it.
That movie paved the way for other martial arts movies with similar action staples and choreographies. Corny as hell, but it was so much fun at the same time. Classic, ma, classic. Thank you, Scott, thank you, Kurt.
Watched No Retreat No Surrender when I was in the army back in the 80's. Me and fellow soldiers would go to Denver regularly and compete in tournaments. Since then I would watch movie night before tournaments. Became a tradition, even when my kids started training and competing.
I watched this film about a million times. Awesome choreography and a great patina...Still love it....It's my favourite together with bloodsport, best of the best and only the strong...Iconic stuff that I still like to watch even after so many years!!!
This is such a treat! Theirs never been any special addition with bonus features of this movie. For years I’ve wanted to know about how it was made. Thank you Scott and Kurt!

why am i just seeing these...ahh mahhh gahh. these are the films that helped coax my parents into enlisting me into martial arts. and the fact that Adkins is conducting these interviews...PRIMO!
This movie changed my perspective on martial art movies !! Oh so martial arts can knock in my back yard!! It was my favorite movie of my childhood!! Thx SCOTT can’t wait for the interview!!
The 90's were the best time growing up as a martial arts fans and students...And yes "No Retreat No Surrender" was one of the those most memorable movies during my junior high years; And listening to Scott's story also brings back a lot of memories of how much I also idolized Kurt, JCVD, Phillip Rhee, etc and their movies. These guys probably don't know how much they have indirectly inspired and influenced so many of us young people into martial arts during the 90s.
There actually were a bunch of movies like the kickboxer etc., that were all a part of the "Karate Tiger series" on VHS here. There were at least 10 different movies.
i just picked up No Retreat No Surrender on blu-ray a week ago which is a great 80s martial arts movie and this was another fantastic interview. i hope Scott puts Kurt McKinney in a movie teaming up together.
Man I love this movie even know at 44 years old and I got into Martial arts by watching this as always wanted to be a great martial artist like Bruce Lee and I was bullied as a child and wanted to look after myself
I'm a Japanese fan I learned about this movie from the AMV on RU-vid. Since the DVD wasn't released in Japan, I finally got an old VHS and watched it with my mom. I watched it over and over again because of its interesting development and sharp action. Please continue to be well
Kurt Mckinney is a living legend & it would be supercool to see thee official sequal for no retrear no surrender...another brilliant interview as always😎
man, "no retreat no surrender" was one of my all time faves. i had that on vhs along with my bruce lee movies that i used to watch every day after school. classic.
Missing these days. I still watch this movie and it is all about what was around the movie. I remember training and doing stuff only because of this movie.
That movie meant alot to me too. Nice to see him here cause I wondered why I didn't see him in more martial arts films too. Hope u really do make an official no retreat 2! Scott can play Jason & Kurt can play his father maby. Give him some fight scenes too. Great interview 🙏
No retreat no surrender was my life as a child. I re rented it multiple times. I would walk in a foot of snow to the video store to rent it. When the workers saw me, they knew that’s what I wanted and would encourage me to try a different movie lol. Ohhh man this movie was fantastic so was double dragon on Nintendo. That’s my childhood
No only yours. Great memories. Humankind can create unique, inspiring, creative things for eternity. Let´s not forget that and maybe find a way with those virtues to do something against all the destruction.
I was similar. I had taken up karate in 1984 at the age of 18 and was generally trying to get in shape, cos I lacked self confidence and was trying to improve myself, so I really related to NRNS. I loved it so much that I rented my own VCR and connected it to my parents' VCR to record the film tape-to-tape. Although the sound didn't record very well, for some reason, I was then able to watch the movie whenever I wanted in my bedroom while I worked out with some weights. Good days. Obviously, years later bought it on DVD. I also remember when The Karate Kid came out in cinemas, we had a bunch of new members at the karate club, but none of them lasted very long when they found out how intense the fitness training was in reality.
I watched this movie when I was in Afghanistan and I had a yellow belt at the time. I was mesmerized for months. To this day, it is still one of my favorite movies.
Big fan of Scott Atkins movies. Love no retreat no surrender. Back in the day found the movie at a garage sale for 3$ brand new. Now I have it in blue ray. Never get tired of watching it.
