For years I've wanted to decorate a wall in my house with sci fi book covers, the same way some people do with New Yorker covers. He's the artist I really think of when I imagine what a good scifi book cover.
The thing I love about John Harris's work is its painterly quality. In his early career he painted a lot in acrylic which can lean towards stiffness and overworking. Today he paints mostly in oils and it is perfect for exhibiting wonder and mystery. His prelim's are done in pastel and charcoal..using all these " analogue" tools leads to compelling images. I see Blender images today and they leave me cold , they are well executed but a lot of them lack the lyrical quality of John Harris's art .
really like you breaking down these art books! a great book to look at is a collection of art by hayao miyazaki and moebius, looking at world building and story telling!
