The Art Of KUK SOOL WON 

Yes Kuk Sool Won was started by this one man "In Hyuk Suh"... However, the name literally means "National Martial Art". This Art has been adopted by the Korean Government to represent Korea itself and gifted In Hyuk Suh with the golden uniform. As told to me by my instructor the way it came into being is that In Hyuk Suh was chosen by his grandfather to pass on the family art, which at the time was illegal under the Japanese occupation. In Hyuk Suh, as a very young toddler, was placed in the Dojo in his baby basket to watch the classes and techniques. Once he was old enough to take over the teaching of his art, many doors were opened to him to train with other masters because of who his grandfather was. That is why you see so many different techniques. KSW ultimately was born out of three main influences in style, all of which were completely Korean. First, peasant farmers had their own way of fighting utilizing the farming tools, again because of the Japanese occupation, weapons were outlawed for the Koreans. Second, the Buddhist monks carried a walking stick or staff to protect themselves from robbers while they were out collecting offerings for the temples. And thirdly, the palace guards. The palace was a sacred place and they were not allowed to shed blood there, thus the hand to hand combat utilizing pressure points, joint-locks and throws.

Kuk sool won takes all the Korean martial arts and puts them into one.

I went to a mandatory seminar and met Kuk Sa Nim (as a student that is his name to us). I held the door open, bowed and talked to him about how amazing his videos in the 80s and 90s were. I saw one of his masters hammer a nail into wood with his bare hand, and Kuk Sa Nim chopped an apple 🍎 in half blind-folded off the top of someone's head. Yes he escaped occupation and laws against learning/ teaching self defense. Kuk Sa Nim has even collaborated with a branch of the U.S. military and allows his methods to be learned on base.

Funny thing is that Suh denies having learned Hapkido under Choi. But I was told that Suh's brother, Seo In-Sun studied under Choi and was a 3rd degree black belt. When it comes to martial arts history, it gets "complicated".

I love this analysis. I studied KSW for 10 years, and what is in the book is all they teach. However, modern research is peer reviewed. Rarely is there only one source of reliable information. So I take your seemingly objective conclusions as as valid a piece of the story as what's printed in the manuals. Thanks!

I studied under Hyuk Su for 2 weeks. All I will say is that Good man is a “Grand Master” (To earn that rank he fought blind folded 30 “Masters at once) he came out of that with a sword mark on the face. Research this fact.

Kook Sool Won, is the Art of War adapted for domestic use. In other words, you have the Kill or Be Killed version, and the regular self-defense version. The higher up you go in Black Belt ranking, the more you get the Kill or Be Killed techniques. Aki Jujitsu is part of its origins..

KUK SOOL WON is the oldest martial art in Korea. All the other forms came from this. Branches of KUK SOOL became other art forms in secular pieces. KUK SOOL WON is the whole history of KOREAN martial arts. It is nasty! It is deadly! It is the whole of all the martial art forms of Korea.

As a student of KUK SOOL, I remember the teacher grabbing my hand and all I felt was fire up my whole arm and it was very intense pain. These people know how to hurt you bad! They are some of the best pressure point manipulators in the world!

I actually met IN HYUK SUH at a KUK SOOL WON school in Davison Mich. He was amazing! Strong as an ox this guy was unreal. He brought his top Black belts with him to show us the strenght and power of this art. I saw these guys do 100 squats on one leg! No bullshit! They did 100 pushups on their fingertips! These are the things you must be able to do to get a Black belt in KUK SOOL WON. You also must last four hours of rigorous training and sparring with the grand master! No easy feat! The lame sparring you see on video is just a show. The real techniques taught to you are war fighting techniques that you only use if your life is in danger. All I can say is, don`t get real with a KUK SOOL unless you want to get f--ked up!

I do not agree with the final statement, there are many movements similar to Hapkido, but there are still more different ones, so clearly Kuk Sool Won is a different art than Hapkido (system), and not a different style of the same system! As much as they think it seems!

I am a first dahn going on to grade for my second, all aspects of kuk sool are based around the tribal, buddhist and royal styles of fighting. You have forms showing rock and dirt throwing for tribal and meditation in buddhist forms

I studied a little bit in Kuk Sool Won on two different occasions and learned that it all depends on who your instructor is and their rank. The first time I studied in it was completely different from the 2nd time because I had two different instructors of a different rank. My first instructor came from a Japanese martial arts background and incorporated his experience into his Kuk Sool Won instruction. It was like learning two different styles of martial arts for me.

I took Kuk Sool Won WAY back in the day, i was a typical gangbanger with only a boxing background but when my dad saw me fighting 3v1 and winning but i never saw the 4th guy, he said if i was gonna be stupid and fight for than one guy at a time, at least be smart about it haha, he put me in it. no idea how he found the the place, only thing i took from it was how to roll so i dont just hit the ground hard. Cant tell you how many times that has saved me in my life from losing my breath lol

In Huk Sah studied with many many masters in Korea. Sometimes learning but a few techniques. His grandfather was in the Royal Court Guard. Master Berry Harmon published "5000 Years of Korean Martial Arts" in 2007. Master Harmon was given access to many people in Korea with first hand knowledge of Korean martial art history. It is very well researched with references from throughout Korea. Some of the techniques and moments are thousands of years old. Also consider Korea was occupied by Japan. Many martial art practices were outlawed. Some of the forms reflect that time in their history. I would imagine much like African history in America many things were taken and credit was claimed by those in power. But also I image they all pulled from the same source. That being Asia as a whole. Like Africa at one point in time Asia was just Asia. One Nation. And Asia is only out dated by Africa. Kuk Sool Won is the history of Korean martial arts. It is the reason why so many types of techniques can be found within its curriculum. It also holds so tightly to tradition that I have heard people call it a cult. Of coarse that is ridiculous. Kuk Sa Nim In Huk Sah brought Kuk Sool to the US in 1974. Along with it came 3600 techniques. and 36 weapons. If you look at Master Harmon's book it is an excellent reflection of Korean Martial arts.

Kuk Sool Won is considered "corrected" Hapkido and is more refined and structured to learn.

Kuk sool is a traditional korean martial art. Once referred to as 31 training because of its comprehensive study of the 31 major traditional martial arts of Korea. These fall into 3 categories: starting with the oldest Sado Mu Sool or family styles, then Bulkyo Mu Sool or Buddhist styles, then Koon Jung MuSool which are royal court martial arts. I myself began study of Kuk sool in 1988. What I notice is that many who are quick to judge Kuk Sool are limited in their knowledge of martial arts history and are only familiar with more recent divisions or distinctions, like japanese karate or chinese kung fu. Yet korea also has existed for millenia whether as simply a dwelling for humans in ancient times or more recently as a nation state. Kuk sool is a battlefield martial art and teaches 18 buddhist weapons and 24 royal court weapons. There is evidence that suggests the very invention of the sword may have occured in the korean peninsula and spread from there. Ancient bronze and also stone swords have been excavated there. Kuk sool practices high level sword tecniques that obviously differ from japanese or chinese styles. It also is an animal style martial art which includes tiger, dragon, mantis, snake, and crane along with eagle, bear and others. Techniques and methods included in Kuk sool are vast and varied. If you have never received a palm strike to the chest or been thrown across the room with a hooked walking cane then you may not be familiar enough with Kuk sool and its origins.
