Sometimes less is more! Having a simple rig for overlanding can be so freeing. There's less to worry about, and your gear doesn't make it into your vehicle unless it's absolutely necessary. In this video, I do a rig walk around of my minimalist overloading setup. Some items are my DIY inventions while others are the highest quality gear that money can buy. I will review my storage system, sleep setup, water storage, propane, battery and refrigeration system. If you saw my Jeep on the road, at first glance, you'd never think it was ready to go on a multi-day camping trip and capable of keeping up with more built-out rigs that have roof top tents or perhaps overloading trailers. Is this car camping? Or is this overloading? You be the judge! If minimalism is your jam, this video might be perfect for you! (Episode 32 - 7/22/23)

Just an FYI for everybody: as long as those green propane tanks are empty they are 100% recyclable. Pull the pressure relief to drain the last bit of propane to atmosphere and throw them in your blue bin 👍🏼

Why throw them away? I just use a refill coupling and a scale. Weigh a new full one, then bleed propane from a 20# tank into the smaller green tank, when it weighs as much as a new one, stop.

Great video from a 'minimalist' overloading perspective. After selling my rooftop tent, I now have very similar setup in my Bronco Sport Badlands with fridge in the driver side back, storage on a custom built shelf and DeepSleep mattress (which is just awesome) on the right side with passenger seat pushed forward. Last month I finished up a 2.5 month trip thru the west and SW as I relocated from Seattle area to SE FL (for family reasons). I appreciate the minimalist setup as I did my trip in a Subaru Outback and camped out every night except once when in Corvallis visiting my daughter. I'm going to get a 24 Rubicon X early next year as I want to continue to explore and found there were so many places that I couldn't get to before as they required 4WD and high clearance vehicles. Your setup has given me lots of good ideas of how to kit out my rig. thanks.

I also like that idea because of the information it gives off to other people. Nothing screams. I have a lot of expensive equipment like a fully kitted out Toyota Tacoma versus a vehicle that looks completely average on the outside, but has everything you might need on the inside A lot of very expensive over landing gear gets snatched because of high profile vehicle sitting in parking lots or out in front of someone’s house. …… I have a 1998 jeep Cherokee and have everything in it. I need for an over landing trip and for roadside repairs and helping other people who are stranded, etc on the outside. The only modifications are a front and rear bumper that look quite OEM with a winch attached and I have limo tint on all the rear windows, you would never know that there’s about $4000-$7000 worth of equipment in the back 😎✌️

I removed my 60 rear seat, installed the Goose Gear 60% delete bracket and built my own platform out of plywood. The Vector storage shelf is on my list. It shouldn’t interfere with my Dominion Hi-lift Jack roll-bar mount. The Ignik Growler kit is what I’ve been looking for. All of the products you are using are high quality. I hope this one doesn’t come off as a sales pitch *fingers crossed* 😅 I’m not sponsored by anyone - so everything in the video is 💯 to give ideas of how I fit everything in the Jeep - for me, that was essentially my idea of a minimalist approach. 😃 But, I get what you’re saying - many times these videos can come off that way. I do have an ‘affiliate link’ for the SideStasher (though, again not sponsored). @@TrailNewbie i think you did a great job! I like they way you pack your gear. There’s way too much emphasis on “stuff” these days. I’m in Australia and just finished a 6100km trip to Cape York (most northern tip of Aus) in my 2022 Gladiator Rubicon and had a great time - had everything I needed but many rigs were just way too heavy and overloaded and paid the price!

I have a 2dr Sidekick and am doing the same thing...I just bought a small pullout chuckbox and I bought a Jeep back-hatch table too. The headrest comes off the front seat and Collapses down into a bed ...cannot wait to travel across Canada with this setup soon. I want to get back split seats so I can leave my dual fridge on top of the pullout chuckbox and the sleep on the passenger side. I also just bought a rotopax 5L for emerg backup gas to attach to the back tire. I bought a travel Berkey and a small bluetti for charging devices...I use my small Snow peak camp stove to boil water and have a two burner stove if needed. Could also do tent camping if I want to watch the stars.

Hey, it is a pretty nice setup. Everybody loves good useable gear that lasts a lifetime, so this is probably the best way to keep our footprints small, live out our overlanding dreams, and beside this, appreciate the moments and experiences and people you meet, more than the gear. My minimalist pack in my truck with a cheap camper shell, was just a pullout bed cushion, two sheets, one heavy blanket, a pack of waters, a colmen stove two pans and utensils for it, and just an ice chest that fits the food for the days, that’s minimalism lol didn’t need a sink, my little sister with autism showed us a random trick she came up with to wash her hands and all she did was set a water bottle on its side and slightly open the cap and let it drip off the tail gate and that saved us a few gallons lol kept our clothes inside our gym bags in the front seats since we ain’t leaving anytime soon, and our firearms within reach, very easy camping stuff, don’t need to spend a a couple hundred bucks on a few organizing bags and fancy gadgets to do stuff that we don’t really need. But everyone does it their own ways

We have a similar philosophy- everything inside. I have a kid with me though, so my rig had to be designed around sleeping 2 and carrying two mountain bikes and all of my mtb gear AND all the other offroad recovery gear and camping stuff inside. So for me it’s an Alucab with a RTT. Man the RTT is so good when you’re rolling a different campsite every night - the Wedge style is 30 secs up and maybe 2 mins down. And I like sleeping up- its like being in a tree fort when you were a kid. Being able to sleep inside your Jeep is awesome, just doesnt work with 2 people and bikes. I have the same Front Runner utensils roll- I love the fact that you can hang it. I have a portable toilet (cause I figure I’ve *#+% in a hole in the woods long enough to have earned a bit of comfort when nature calls LOL) and it’s nice being able to put it in the truck bed away from the cabin and where we sleep. Although it’s pretty well sealed, just something about having it away. I pack it in last so it is easy to get to in an emergency and it comes out first at camp. Been looking at those lights. Right now I have these Revel Gear LEDs on a wire that work well- one strand on each side of Gladiator plugged into battery in tent on one end and toed to tree on other. Lights up campsite well, takes about 2 mins per strand to set up, and if I hear something at night I can turn em on from the tent. Still might get what you have for even easier set up. Im all about not too much, and what I do bring has to be simple and quick setup and tear down. Have fun out there. 🤙

Thank you! Indeed, it has been a decent outlay of $$ for my setup. Vehicle aside - I bought much of this during/around my 40th birthday. So, I was going a little hog-wild on some of the gear purchases (in terms of price). At the same time ... the gear I bought has to fit just right in the Jeep, so at some point I have certainly had to spend more for things that are sized just right and fit perfect. Regarding the legs for the Front Runner boxes - that is great advice. I'll look into that a bit. I'm not 100% sure I could do that - but I'll start consiering a modification for sure. Always improving!! Thank you for your comment - I appreciate every single one!

Nice setup. I sleep in the jeep too when it is just me. But when my wife comes with, we use a RTT, for a while we took all the gear out and slept in back, but it is much easer to leave everything in the jeep and just pop the tent.

Thank you! I appreciate the comment! When I have others from my family with me, we will typically set up an SUV tent off of the back of the Jeep or a gazelle tent. There may be a day when I get some sort of rooftop tent, but for now this is working. Heck, someday I’d like to get a gladiator with a Go Fast Camper or something. That would be so cool. 😃😃👏🏻👏🏻

Great video! I have a 2013 LR4 and want to start overlanding but don't want to attach anything to the roof as well. This was just what I was looking for!😊😊😊 Thank you!

Right on! I’m so glad this video could help! One of my main reasons for nothing on the roof is: I still want to park in the garage. 😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👊🏼👊🏼😁😁
