★ Links below ⬇ if you need them. Which is your fave Christie cover? Tom Adams designed the paperback book covers for Agatha Christie for over 20 years, with designs both for Fontana in UK/Europe and also different artwork for Pocket Books in the US, so his works are easily recognisable around the globe. This video reviews all the covers and decodes some of the secrets behind their designs.

Also - eeek! How ridiculously long is this video??? I initially planned to do just my favourite covers. But then I couldn't narrow it down enough so I just ended up doing all of them! I hope there is at least one similarly crazy person out there interested in the secrets behind Agatha Christie cover art as I am...
You might wonder how I know so much about the artworks. Firstly, I'd been collecting the covers without really knowing much about the artist behind them since I was quite young. My interest in the artist was piqued by an exhibition at the Torquay Museum in 2012 called the 'Agatha Christie Cover Story,' and since then I've read a few books by and about Tom Adams' artworks - really lovely art books, I'll add links below if you're interested:

Tom also has a facebook page and website with some of his paintings, and I found out more about Ian Robinson (Tom's "replacement" for some of the covers) from a lovely fan facebook page I'll link below too (this was also the source for the photos of Tom Adams in his studio and painting):

Tom was my hero. As an adolescent I was obsessed by his book covers. I used to photocopy them in the school library (only black & white) and colour them in. I never dreamt I’d own five of his paintings and meet him and his wife and grow to know them as friends. I’m devastated. Rest in peace, darling man.

Very sad news today and such a great loss. How lovely that your love for his art meant you were able to get to know him and his family, and let him know how appreciated he was 💕

I was ignorant about Ian Robertson. The aesthetic "look" of his covers made me think they were part of Adams' oeuvre. Indeed, a few of them are just as iconic in my humble opinions [e.g., the exquisite orange hues of "The Labours of Hercules"]

Ah... Agatha Christie... My crime story first love! I read her books as a child in Indonesian. All I can remember of the books are that they were published by Gramedia and there are a lot of black on the covers. Thanks for this!!

Yes, Christie is the best childhood introduction to crime novels!

A wonderful video whose only flaw is that several of the books shown are covers done by Ian Robertson, who filled in during periods of time when Tom Adams was busy on other projects. They are usually easy to spot as Ian Robertson's art was generally 3 items placed on a simpler background (consider "Murder is Easy" with the spider and bird). Most of Tom's art is shown in one of the two books that collected his art, or he received credit in the paperback, while Robertson never did.

Ian Bishop Hi Ian - thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment 😀 Yes, I do talk a bit about Ian Robinson’s covers and show them right at the end of the video (around about 30:50) as his covers are so often mistaken for Tom’s (he was, after all, hired to do them in the same style). And I found both the books on Tom’s artwork that you mentioned were invaluable for my research, as well as an excellent exhibition on his artwork that was put on in the UK several years ago. If you’re interested to check the description box for the video (or on my website), I’ve included a link to a lovely Facebook group dedicated to Tom’s art, and as I mentioned I was indebted to them for help in distinguishing which covers were Ian’s rather than Tom’s. As far as I understand it, the moderator of this group actually spent some time with Tom directly to determine which covers were whose (Murder Is Easy was actually Tom’s - he did a couple covers using this simpler style with 3 elements in the mid 60s and my guess is those were used as the template for Ian’s covers - a few of Tom’s covers are missing from the books because they were unable to track down the original or high enough resolution artwork to include them.) In fact, I’ve attempted to do some more research into Ian Robinson as an artist (I love his covers for Cards on the Table and The Hollow in particular) but not been very successful - if you know more about him and his work I’d be really keen to know more (did he do other cover art, for example?). Cheers! (Edited for time stamp)

Very informative video! I've never seen these covers. I wonder why they never made a deluxe edition box set for Poirot. 4 novels a volume and 10 volumes should cover it. (Or maybe there is an edition already?) Even the Folio society editions are separate books and I didn't enjoy the covers a lot. Somehow they felt muted.

Yes, the FS editions have a very different feel to these paperbacks. I’ve read a few of Christie’s books via omnibus editions (there was a complete set of hardbacks called the Crime Collection released in the 80s) but tbh I think it’s a much nicer experience to read them as single volumes 😀

I am obsessed with Agatha Christie book covers but funnily i never liked the Tom Adams ones because i find them too creepy and strange. I prefer the old yellow fontana or the red pan editions because they are cosier.
