During TEDxYouth@Zurich, Maria talked about the “Art of Negotiation”. She explained how every negotiation is different and walked us through what are for her the most important pillars of negotiation: logic, emotion and reputation - as per Aristotle on persuasion: ethos, logos and pathos - and explained why each one of them is crucial in the negotiation process. She offered three practical tips on how to think and interact during a negotiation, taking us through resilience, the importance of kindness and consideration, and lastly our ability to gain control over how we react in a given situation.

I really liked this presentation. Ploumaki is composed and never loses control. She uses a combination of facts, analogies and personal narratives to bring her messages across. It will be difficult for left brain people to understand all of her points but right brain people will find this refreshing.

This is currently my favorite TED talk on conflict negotiation. I thought the delivery was very well done. Perhaps I related well to the perspective of the speaker. It was well structured, so I came away with a coherent message. It was engaging so that it held my attention. She also mentioned many aspects I have not heard in the 20 or so conflict management videos I have listened to so far. I feel like I came away with some solid tips for surviving a difficult environment.

I too like the concept of combination lock and Maria gave good advice I, like when she gave the advice that we should know what kind of game we are playing, and she used a lot of comparison to tell her story

She stated deep universal messages. All negative commentators just do not get the points. I clearly got them. And the introduction with a goat is a very nice metaphor. Such a pity there are only 3 pieces of advice from her in the video))

I can get the messages, but how do you apply them? How do I act, but not react, for example? I'm trying to understand BATNA. How do I be tough on the situation, but not on the people?

If you give someone your "Remote Control" you have lost the negotiation. They will push your defensive buttons. Good stories to back up her logic.

i think if you have been in a position to negotiate..and didnt so so well...this material can be very useful. i have been in numerous negotiations in the past year. it is so easy to fall in the two ends ..either be rigid with what you want or fall completely comfortable when things start to seem are going your way. either way you risk loosing so much more if your oponent is better at the art.

Disappointing presentation. Although as a general rule I rather write a positive comment or none a all, I can't resist and say I don't think anyone would become even remotely wiser when it comes to negotiations by watching this clip. Lots of platitudes and vague concepts that are not tied in convincingly in a negotiation setting. Also some original ideas would be nice. Hope this negative comment would make the speaker try harder to make her material easier to relate to.

+Bananasauce There is a big learning here - emotions always influence logic. if you are negotiating with a person/persons and your tone, your word choice, your body language, the ideas you present - are causing either an accumulative emotional antagonistic effect then that dial she referred to is going the wrong way for you. This lecture only means something if you have to negotiate at a significant level every day or so. Hence why it seemed a worthless event to you.

I have a mixed feeling after watching that video. Definetely presentation skills should be mastered, still I am convinced that she rehersed several times. The fundamental fear that anyone can relate to - is fear of not be liked. That fear transforms in the motive to prove others that you deserve to be liked. But no one really cares. You either come and appear who you are and transfer a signal of genuine person. You either step out of comfort zone and be a completely different person. Being in between - just not convincing. The subject is very wide and it starts with ethimology of word negotiate, that have roots back to time between Roman wars, when you can do nothing "otios" or you make yourself busy "neg otios". So negotiation and business are indeed simular words... and so on...

She blatantly stole that story at the beginning about the buck and the barn... It's from the book 'how to win friends and influence people' by Dale Carnegie, which has sold over 16 million copies. I don't doubt for a second that she has read that book since she's into business. Check it out if you want, chapter 3 of the book on the second page of the chapter. It's a great story with a practical moral, just no need to pass it as one of hers...

+guillaume nouri - Hi Guillaume, I see your point, at the same time I hope I can change your opinion with this small clarification: I know Maria personally (she is a good friend on mine). She grew up in a farm and her dad keeps a nasty scar from that buck's horns... I think it is ok for something described in a book to also happen in real life :) I guess the buck makes a good example of how to influence animal behaviour and I bet it is described in more than one book.
