I love these investment/real money/assets videos more than most of the MTG content. I feel like given Rudy's work history in the financial sector it's easy to see he knows what he's talking about. More importantly he's not trying to bamboozle us like most people talking about finances would who are just trying to make more money for themselves.

I think you largely highlighted something that I have seen in other markets as well. I worked for a Sports Card and Comic Shop during the crash of the 90s in both of those collectible markets. What crashed... was the "new" stuff that was driven up by speculation. What didn't crash was the golden and silver era comics or the pre-80s era sports cards. The vintage stuff with low print runs maybe dropped a bit temporarily but it was limited in scope and for the most part those products remained viable for the long haul.

Always fun to revisit these... and as Rudy once said, "the items in the background were chosen for a reason." *scans less obvious background* WELL played...

What intrigues me about the collectibles-thing is this: when investors move into something like reserved list cards, there is a very real chance that at some point the actual players will have moved out of the market, leaving the investors to keep pushing the cards around among themselves. What I can't fathom about that is if this is the point where the whole thing likely crashes or if it can stay a healthy asset, even if the cards will never be used again by players.

Why the FucK do I watch these videos ?? I have never played this game, I've never even seen a single magic card in my life...seriously I've watched so many & I can't stop & after each one I'm like why did I just waste 20 mins...click on to the next one! Like a dang drug, crazy 😝

There are 2 filters the IRS has to track/detect "off-the-grid" investments: The initial purchase (as Rudy stated), and the liquidated funds return to the market (aka bank deposit, on-grid purchases, etc.). Your only option to avoid this second filter is a felony called "Money Laundering", and you best believe the IRS is good at catching it. It's why you must include asset values & bank account information on your annual tax filing. They're seeing if your income lines up with your savings & known assets. There's a grey area due to small day-to-day purchases, but large discrepancies send red flags & lead to audit. Anything illegal found and you're on a one way bus to hosetown. This is a huge issue this year due to the crypto spike. You either fork over a huge percentage of your gains or play a dangerous game with your freedom. Gotta love the system.

"Some people just don't know what it is." Uhh. I have never met in real life a single person that can explain to me satisfactorily what a blockchain is. Yet I see all kinds of stupid people on Facebook talking about how they're buying Bitcoin, and I just wish I could throw bricks at their heads. People putting their savings into it that only think they can make money speculating. I am developing a couple of projects on the Ethereum network, and I tell people to stay away from it for now because of the volatility. Whatever happens DO NOT put any money into ANY coin that isn't called Bitcoin or Ethereum. NONE of these new "ICOs" are going to amount to anything. Mark my words, one year from today (August 12th, 2018), you come here and think about this comment because the SEC will have gone after MOST of these Ponzi scheme "ICO" shitcoins.

There are a few things interesting trends to be considered with this: 1. inefficient markets present much greater risk than efficient ones (what's safer buy 10 alpha boxes or put that cash in mutual funds?). So think twice before you put your retirement savings in cardboard. 2. With a push toward electronic medium, and those markets being so much more efficient (from a price to consumer perspective), perhaps we'll move away from paper magic entirely (hearthstone model) 3. The IRS position on these types of things are cost basis of an asset compared to selling price of an asset as a gain or loss. For registered securities, there is a lower tax rate for assets held for longer than 1 year. Cost basis and selling point apply for all currencies including cryptocurrencies. The IRS taxes on the cash basis, not GAAP or some other accrual basis. I agree with Rudy, as society will change drastically if cryptocurrencies become common place. Tax avoidance/ evasion becomes very complex. Additionally, if nobody wants dollars (or other paper currencies for that matter) then there are a great many societal consequences to consider (IE. what would society look like if there were zero demand for T-Bills at any interest rate because dollars literally couldn't be used to purchases goods and services, only cryptocurrencies?)

Some great content in this video and really makes me think. I think the one X factor is that at any point Wizards could (not saying they will) reprint the Lotus, Mox etc... .the market would crash which is my one issue with magic as an investment. The control factor isnt there or regulated.

Rudy you're right. My magic cards that I scanned on TCG player are up. Like I scanned a set box of midnight hunt it's at 158.39 rn. It was 180 at one point a few months ago. Went down to 132. Yesterday it was around 155. Today around 156/157 and now over 158 magic going to hold up during market crash. Lol nice. ;)

Scary shit happens with downturn, recetion type of times, kinda crazy to think how the MtG market (reserved list) stayed pretty stable. However these type of times are always great for opportunity investment wise. Makes me worry as to when this next time will come but, I feel even a little more calm having known the info you gave in this video. non-registered assets like bitcoin are good and bad for people. The non-taxation is good of course but what do you use these coins on. Not everywhere accepts the currency and you would need to be able to easily transfer bitcoins for cash without leaving a paper trail. Going via Paypal gives your SSN so that's traceable, any big transactions would show up as a big red flag. Not on expert on bitcoin but it does have some very good points. also on a side note. I almost purchased a coin for $10 around 2008ish or something along those lines for a "Runescape auto woodcutter" macro but didn't because I had no idea what the heck bitcoin was and figured I wouldn't use the remaining credit. But it wouldn't of mattered anyways because to my knowledge bitcoins are saved to your hard drive or something like that so I wouldn't have the coins either way because my computers motherboard kinda died.

If the majority of these items are non-registered assets purchased with shadow money what is to stop WOTC from printing from the reserved list. The threat of law suits would be minimized as well as the financial payout if the suit is lost.

The bitcoin / altcoin markets is in a bubble right now, luckily I got in early enough this time. Would have made more if I only kept it in bitcoins, but meh 25-30% growth in a few months aint shabby while learning & making loads of wrong calls. If i keept it as btc only i would have made more but learnt less so i don't think I'm unhappy with it so far. Keep up the good work, don't trade / play magic and still enjoy your stuff.

Do you think the same principles of which you mentioned can be applied to Pokemon? Now we are seeing prices like never before with some of these cards...see graded 1st edition charizards. What do you think the outlook for some of these vintage cards and trophy cards printed in small numbers looks like?

I think you're forgetting to factor in an aspect that causes the main difference between the fluctuations between cryptocurrency and other non-registered assets: The black market. one of the largest contributions to the flux in value of Bitcoin, was it's use in purchasing drugs. I don't think local dealers accept magic cards as currency yet. This market is enormous, enough to change value from bitcoins being worth 10s of dollars to 100s of dollars and upward.

This exactly what’s happening with Pokémon right now, Logan Paul started the major climb 🧗 I got back into playing Pokémon 2 months before he bought that stupid 1st edition and now everything is sooo expensive, an it was already costing me enough where I started stealing the Pokémon team rocket style from target & Walmart, which isn’t sustainable by any means.

GPU Mining has actually messed up the gaming market recently. Basically, because gaming GPUs are really good at math to render all the games, Bitcoin miners have been buying up the high end ones, creating basically super computers whose soul purpose is to mine, while driving up the price of these sought-after gaming GPUs. I have heard that the GPU manufacturers want to make dedicated mining GPUs to try and alleviate the problem, though.
