A look at the method of Pen and Wash explaining what paper to use and equipment followed by a demonstration to achieve that classic 'illustration' look to your art.
Hi, thank you for watching the video and happy it has inspired you try a bit of pen work, it's a nice medium to paint in and get some expressive brush and pen work. 🙏🏻
Hi, thank you and glad you found the video informative. I am going to do a sort of update to this video today and will be uploaded tonight. This new video will include the use of fountain pens.
really very pleased to have found you….inspires many questions but I’m hoping to watch other videos and grow in this. This painting style suits me and I love the freedom of the water and the respect you have for the medium. Will resist the temptation for now to go buy more supplies but the pen seems invaluable.
Hi Nancy, so glad you enjoyed ther video, it is a very nice medium, the pen really makes things pop. I am going to do another video about the 'tools' of the medium for this weekends video as I am now also using fountain pens which are brilliant to use so that will be up tomorrow. I have done some other pen and wash videos lately which I'm sure you will fine entertaining, all on the channel.
You make it look easy Sir, I know you've put in many hours to your craft, For it appearing like it's easy. Appreciate you sharing your skills! Really liked that part where added the ocean sound with the finished piece 👍 truly adds to the feel! Be well!
Thanks ktor I am going to do a few more pen and wash videos exploring the other way of doing a painting by applying the ink first then applying the watercolour, some other ideas to use the medium👍
Hi, thank you for the comment and glad you liked the video. It is very nice paper to let your inspiration run amok and just let the paint do what it wants to do 👍
Very excited to have a go at this. It’s lovely and you make it seem effortless which I know won’t be so for me but I’m going to enjoy playing. Thank you.
Hi, thank you, glad you liked the video. It's easier than it looks but of course start with a simpler subject, one or two simple buildings and see how it goes. I have done several pen and wash videos lately, have a look at them to perhaps give you some ideas of what to paint 🙏🏻
I do Line & Wash but use Cold Press almost exclusively (Arches & Boahong). Lines can be a little more fussy, but the texture lends itself to loose sketchy lines like dry brushed watercolors. I'll have to try some bristol board...
Hi, yes I do sometimes use hot press Bockingford but I'm not that keen on it or Bockingford in general and I do prefer Arches but I only have that in rough. Bristol Board is fun to use especially on a looser subject matter but fun nonetheless 👍🏻
I’ve just discovered your channel and this was a fantastic introduction. I love line and wash and this painting is beautiful. I must buy some of that paper to try. I’ve subscribed and hope to see lots more of your videos. Thank you. 😊
Hi, so happy you liked the video and many thanks for subscribing. Line and wash is a really nice medium, it can rescue a watercolour that's gone slightly 'astray' 😉.
Hi, Thank you so much for the kind comment, very happy you found it of interest. I have done other videos about pen and wash, it's literally my favourate medium, so versatile 👌
Hi Annette, thank you so much for the kind comment and watching the video, it makes me happy that you learned something and had also give you the confidence to try a dip in pen, it really will make all the difference. Have a look at one of my more recent videos l, painting Durham Cathedral in pen and wash as I really go to town with the pen showing how you can literally scribble in texture and detail. Hope to see you again 🙏🏻
Hi Karen, thanks for the comment and view and remember, when using the pen (hopefully a nice dip in pen) just scribble and doodle, try to be really loose, the looser the better 🙏
Hi Tina, thank you for the watch and comment, happy you got something useful from the video. I have other pen and wash videos on the channel if interested 🙏🏻
Are you from Hartlepool? Your accent sounds very local to me, and I’ve drawn that Hartlepool scene many, many times over the years. I’ve just found you today, and it’s such a pleasant surprise!
Hi, actually yes I do when I want do dome thing but black may be a bit too 'in your face' as the term goes 😊. I did this a few videos ago painting a scene of a few boats using analogous colours.
The picture itself is not really the subject, it's the explanation of the pen and the ink, showing how the pen works on the paper, how you can basically doodle onto the painting and not being bogged down trying to follow lines, basically how to be loose, the pen and wash technique can be used for anything so you could take the technique and apply it to a couple of trees which I did in the video before this when I painted Durham Cathedral and it would work. BTW, I don't think you are being nasty at all 👍
