Known as both the queen of flowers and the flower of queens, the rose is one of the most prevalent raw, natural ingredients in French luxury perfume. And yet, over the course of the 20th century, roses have all but disappeared from their native soil, in the mountainous hinterland of the French Riviera. In Grasse, perfumers, businesses and rose growers are currently striving to make the fields once again bloom with centifolia.
Meanwhile, in Bulgaria, rosa damascena, another perfume rose and a proud icon of the country, is also flourishing anew. Could we be on the brink of a European War of the Roses? Passionate perfume creators are set for some heady and fragrant peace-talks.
