A close examination of ten powerful rhetorical devices: 1. Logos, 2. Ethos, 3. Pathos, 4. Thesis, 5. Distinction, 6. Procatalepsis, 7. Irony, 8. Rhetorical Question, 9. Hypophora, & 10. Anecdote. We look at the definition of these devices then explore how Professor Gordon Marino expertly applies said devices in his essay "A Life Beyond 'Do What You Love.'" Great for writers of all ages!

the names of the principles are not "fancy words", they are greek words and for two reasons: 1 - most of them dont have a corresponding english word but must be translated with a periphrase , and 2 - rhetoric was born some 2500 years ago. so kudos to whoever cites their sources and down with the dumbing down of this ancient, precious art

My attempt at Persuasive Speech: I grew up on a chicken farm in Georgia and became an expert at shoveling chicken poop. After all, people need fried chicken and I helped them eat. I went to tech school to get away from the smell and make money. I became an Electronic Technician. I was in a clean place but ended up hating it. I was up to my neck in lies. A component could look like a resistor but it was really an “open” circuit. A capacitor could turn out to be a “short” circuit, I couldn't trust anything. In High School my easiest and best subject was English lit. I loved reading 1984 and answering questions about it. Nothing was easier but I didn't know you could major in English at college! That was 46 years ago - don't make the mistake I did - by all means do what you love! Life is short...

Thank you very much for this presentation! I learned a lot! You have a very comfortable way about how you speak amd you are very charismatic- which is great because, to my detriment, I am so very easily bored. Thank you again for the learning experience.

Ten seconds in and you see a guy with a beard and glasses sitting in front of books and you know that he's applying this stuff.

Thank you! Excellent lesson, splendidly conceived, structured, and presented. How I wish I had been privy to lectures like that 50 years ago. I will look for more videos from you. I also hope you are the narrator on some books to which I will be listening.

Excellent use of the expository as argument for critical analysis of thesis,,,,, as opposed to use of pure critisizm or critique in order to draw out truth.
