Many thanks to Robben Ford for agreeing to this and also to my buddy Rodger Fox for making it happen.
Before people say it - I realise the audio is less than perfect (technical issue occurred). I’ve made the best of it so hope people can get something from this. Filmed at Victoria University at the NZ School of Music.

Amen Robben... as a 70 year old picker, with not nearly your ability, I could not agree with you more about the state of current music & what I know about the industry... keep picking & stay true to your values..😎🎸👍

Rick Berry yeah, the music industry is in a funny place but the good news is things always change. Constantly. Not always for the better but I’m hopeful...

Robben seems like a genuinely nice guy which many of truly greats are. Those with lesser talents are the ones with the attitudes it seems.

Col. Harlan T. Cornstarch yes I’d agree that 9/10 times the great players are nice people. Occasionally you get one or two who are bitter and or tired of it but most are cool.

Here he is, Robben Ford, one of the titans of music, and he can't afford a 59 Les Paul. He should be presented with a gift of one by the US government just for being alive.
@NickGranville
@NickGranville 5 лет назад
AnalogOpher agreed. It would be nice if all artists of the highest level got the support they deserved but it’s not the way of the world, sadly. I do love his determination to try to find a way around it to get something which works for him.
@NickGranville

Just thought, wouldn’t it be cool if rich people bought the ‘59 les Paul’s and donated them to Robben and players similar. That’s a way better use for them than sitting in glass cases

Four Owls I bonamassa has loaned his gear to buddies of mine. Eg josh Smith has his vintage Bassman among other stuff. I don’t think Jb is just keeping it all for himself. I do wondered where JB gets the money from though

This is a great interview Nick! I've been following Robben in You Tube and even purchased a few of his lessons on True Fire! Rhythm guitar for me is much more important and what I seek to be decent at even if lead is what most seek. I love lead but rhythm takes precedence! That is why I follow folks like you and Robben who have a sound rhythmic style yet versatile! Robben hit it on the nail's head when he said, the art of guitar is starting to disappear and everyone is going electronic/production. It's a shame but I still have hopes that younger people will gravitate to the old school of playing guitar! Awesome interview!
@NickGranville

Thanks man! Yeah I totally agree; rhythm is where it’s at. Robben is such a great rhythm player, and underrated in this area I think. Cheers

I think I could listen to him talk all day! Saw Robben at Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival (England) a couple of years ago and he was great! Just waiting for Chris Cain to come here! Thanks for an ace video.

Stuart Keightley cool. Yeah Robben has lots of good info to share. You gotta see chris cain. He’s a force to be reckoned with. Even Robben would agree. Chris is my fav blues player in the world

I think we have the ability to build our own audiences, and adopt an independent approach-the industry is more in our own hands, rather than radio/t.v driving it, I know a few entrepreneurial music people who are doing well, more work, but less exploitation!
@NickGranville
@NickGranville 6 лет назад
Michael Gorman I agree. No doubt the music industry has changed in recent years and artists like Robben are of the older school so less likely to adapt.... but there is still plenty of opportunities. It’s by no means easy and is likely harder than it ever was but no impossible. It’s a good and bad time to be a musician, if you know what I mean
@Deliquescentinsight

Yep, I know what you mean - it always was a struggle! At least we have greater control, home recording and so forth!

Jazz etc thanks. Maybe try turning it up? I’m listening on my headphones at the moment and I can hear everything. I do agree the spoken audio isn’t the best, I lost main audio recording (out of my control) so I had to rely on the backup sound. Made the best with what I had to work with. Cheers

Ha! Good point. It wasn’t that cold at the time but I guess coming from Nashville in the summer to Wellington in the winter is a shock to the system. Or maybe he felt it just looks cool. 😊

4:44 Sadly, real music, I mean real human beings making music together with instruments they have each spent a lifetime in an attempt to become unique artist's with, has become secondary to bubblegum pop with shiny lights and nudity and profanity or either some other passing fad. People such as Robben Ford, Tedeschi Trucks Band, John Scofield, Matt Schofield, Larry Carlton and many more, who are all masterful true Artists are literally taking a back seat to this nonsensical world of fake computerized garbage. Country music held its ground for the longest but now has been saturated by generic hip hop crap, and little blonde headed girls who run around on stage nearly nude without any possibility of writing a truly great song nor singing anything decently. I personally have a great amount of dislike for nearly all newer music. Some say this was caused by MTV which is partially true, but the real truth begins all the way back to Elvis. Because once people began "watching" music instead of "listening" to music the spiraling path to nothingness was created. MTV simply opened all the doors to even the most grotesque imaginations. (MUSIC)- is an ART. ART is timeless therefore it does not age. This is why all those songs from the 60's and 70's have held strongly in the world. But since the 80's you have to really dig to find anything worth listening to or anything that really moves you. Keep up the good work Robben. You are one of my favorites. Maybe one day I will actually have a chance to watch you in person

Fords songs are terrible and that's why you'll never hear his stuff on the radio. He's such a great player but he needs to stop trying to do his own stuff.
@NickGranville
@NickGranville 6 лет назад
mark jovanelli maybe songwriting isn’t his strongest area in your opinion, but it’s not terrible. But like his singing I guess it adds to the package: killer guitar, some vocal, some songs etc. I doubt many blues players get played on the radio these days anyway so there is that. For me the guitar playing is just ridiculously good. My favs are his covers though - talk to your daughter etc.
@samwilcockmusic
@samwilcockmusic 6 лет назад
I wouldn’t call his songwriting ‘terrible’; not even close.
@NickGranville
@NickGranville 6 лет назад
@Bob Marley, agreed. All songwriters have their best work and their not so good stuff and it's all personal opinion. Some people love Taylor Swift, others not so much. Each to their own. Cheers

You don't hear Miles Davis or Trane on the radio either, and they were not bad songwriters imho. Robben Ford is not a bad songwriter at all.
