It sucks to see an artist so creative and ambition be limited by the body they inhabit to the point where they can barely do it at all, I hope he's able to find someone who can draw the manga well because it's clear that there is still a lot he wants to do
yeah, but he refuses to have assistants. and i don't think he's going to change his mind no matter what if he's been doing this with the back pain for so long.
I'm pretty sure he told his wife they were allowed to finish hunterxhunter without him if he dies. He has hidden a script with the direction the story was supposed to go in and how it should end, I'm pretty sure.
But I understand, because it would probably loose something if someone else drew Hunter x Hunter, and he’s worried about it. It’s really unfortunate, and I do hope that he can help work with others in HxH
finally someone who recognize togashi artistic skills, i'm tired of those people criticizing his works online and mocking his art while they don't even know what he is going through, Togashi is by far one of the most skilled mangaka for me (we can especially see it in yuyu hakusho) along with, Inoue, obata and Kentao Miura
@@jonnysac77 thats typically how Mangaka are viewed. Guys like Kishimoto and Oda have been pumping out high quality chapters weekly for 15-20 years straight so they set a rather high standard.
@@principalitycidade4323 of course! Totally agree. But I’d rather he focus on his health rather than kill himself making manga. I’m an ideal world, I’d love for him to finish his own manga.
the thing is, i feel like he wants to draw the best chapters for us and he knows only himself can do it, that's why he doesn't do that, he is kinda pridefull with his work, but it's like a good kind of pride, i don't know how to explain it, he won't hire someone because the work wouldn't be at his best and he wants to give the best to the fans.
Panel structure is always something i’ve adored about Togashi ever since i saw Kurapika and Melody leaning over the edge of a panel :) His work is just so creative, and nothing is ever confined to simple boxes which is why he’s one of my favorite mangaka of all time.
I’m glad that you also mentioned Yu★yu★Hakusho as it a clear comparison to go from when evaluating the Artistic evolution of Yoshihiro Togashi’s ability, I’ve recently finished Yu★yu★Hakusho( ^ω^ ) looking so looking at Hunter x Hunter I really see that the author has gone through quite the journey with his new masterpiece though I can’t say it is better or worse than what it used to be, it is definitely Art that I look forward to seeing the story, characters, world building is a unique and truly fantastic thing to witness I’m grateful for Yoshihiro Togashi’s hard work on both series and it is unfortunate that there is so much pain that comes from pursuing what your passionate about I just hope that it can all be well somehow and Alex thanks again for the amazingly made video(^^)/
I really like how the manga in later parts can look and feel like 2000s anime while it flips to a more sharp design that gets you by surprise especially in the succession war arc where it feels standard shounen but switches to seinen content which is awesome. But the line art or storyboard really aren't a good excuse to me really. The anime fixes it to show what togashi wanted to show so it's ok
Great video! Togashi's artwork is something I find so consistently fascinating to analyze, because it's so aestetically interesting. I'm 200% sounding like the pretentious nerd I am when I write this, but I actually enjoy the unfinished artwork quite a bit. Mainly because infamous panels, like Gon waving goodbye in front of the woods communicates a point of intrest through the bare minimum, that actually it's a very pure expression of an idea, which as an artist I love. Compromise and the manga industry go hand in hand of course, so other infamous moments like the end of Greed Island are, of course, exactly that. If it looked finished constantly, I don't think I'd be saying "I wish this was unfinished" but it's that borderline expressionism that compelled me the most to manga chimera ant and especially the election (my favorite hunter x hunter arc). Your descriptions of everyone was spot on. It's that mix of cartoony personality driven designs that I love about Togashi's draftsmanship, almost like whoever dominates the page, dominates the tone of the page. This is why I keep coming back to expressionism. I think of the impressive pages like Netero's giving thanks being a wonderful example of crosshatching right next to Gon's transformation near the end of the arc accented by brush strokes. Then followed by the absolute essentials in the absolute compromised pages. It's something I really enjoy. I do hope Togashi's health improves and he is able to somehow finish HxH. But if not, videos like these definitely keep it alive.
I think Togashi's back pain is combined with headaches and migraines. While term "back pain" seems small, it is still central cord of nerve systems. If something goes wrong there it can reflect pain to all parts of the body. Movement of the hand radiates impulse to the back and that in turn might send painful signal to the brain. I am not expert on this and mostly base this on simplimistic view. Every nerve signal goes through spinal cord as it reaches the brain so it is not surprising misalignments around back area can make whole body go numb.
Incredible video. Loved your analysis of the changes in artwork and I really appreciated how you talked about Togashi's health. It is so refreshing to hear a thoughtful take on these things.
What’s wrong with Tokyo Ghoul’s art? I just finished Re and I think it’s pretty nice. It definitely developed over time, but I can’t say it was ever bad. I’ll say this though: Some characters look WAY too similar in Re and it makes it hard to keep track of who’s who. Other than that though, I think it’s pretty good
Never did I say the art of Tokyo ghoul was bad all I was saying is the artist and writer for Tokyo ghoul has stated that he is a fan of Hunter Hunter and personally studied the art style of Togashi Saying he has a big influence on his art style
I always disagree about the direct connections to YuYu Hakusho. Hunter X hunter picks up the character traits of Yu yu Hakusho and makes a salad with it. Killua is the guy that acts fast and precise, like Hiei, but that's mostly a front and he's probably the most compassional of the roster along with Leorio, Leorio at the beginning seems to be kind of a jerk with golden heart and kind of dumb like Kuwabara. However, While Kuwabara is very hotheaded, Leorio tries to resolve everything trying to not resort to violence, Wich is a very Kurama thing to do. Gon resorts to creativity like Yusuke, and tends to act without thinking. But he's also very naive, wich is both a gift and a curse. I compare that mostly with Amanuma from Yu Yu hakusho, the kid that can put everyone in a videogame not knowing it was a death sentence to him. At Last Kurapika seems to be like Kurama, being very cautious and always trying to solve things using his head, but he also tends to slip and act recklessly if he's emotionally pushed, That's very Hiei of him. Something that Hunter X hunter has is that it has WAY more layers to their main characters, giving them situations where they would act in a way that would seem out of character in other mangas, but trough development make sense here. HxH chars are like coins. And they all flip in different ways. On the other side i believe Togashi style changes later because of his back pain, characters look more like Yuyu Hakusho characters the more the series advance Because that's the style more comfortable for Togashi. Gon Father looks a LOT like adult Yusuke, and he looks more like that the more the series advances. The background thing is definitely because of his back pains. I mean Togashi never draws a lot of backgrounds, but he used to draw backgrounds more often. Now he mostly does to set the scene, but he used to do that to also set the mood of a scene. Wich he almost doesn't do anymore. Im kinda Mad at him for refusing to resort to assistance. The man can barely draw anymore, he should focus more on laying out the pages and let other artists in charge of inking and such. Back in the Yu Yu Hakusho days i didn't mind, he was fine back then. But the man can barely get up to work now.
@@alexenterprises1 shiieet u really replied...love ur videos man..saw the artistic evolution of Berserk and fell in love with ur channel...keep doing what ur doing man..
Your videos are concise and very well spoken. I feel in video essays recently a lot of youtubers use convoluted sentences and long words in order to make themselves appear smarter, but sometimes more common words fit better and are easier on the listener. I wish all video essays were like this. tired of other creators complicating things by using language they aren't comfortable with. Great video. Im glad your video showed up in my feed
Could you do an artistic evolution video on the Alita Battle Angel series next? I think this series deserve more recognition and the way the drawing style evolves is interesting in many ways.
Togashi is, artistically (because everyone know how good he is when we're talking about story-telling and world-building), one of the most underrated modern artist there is. People are defenitely too focused on the idea that manga drawings need to be linear, clean, easily readable and pleasant, and i think a lot of this thought process was behind the realization of the 2011 anime too (now, you can like it all you want, you can even subjectively prefer the anime atmosphere and art to Togashi's, but it was OBJECTIVELY a betrayal of his artistic vision), in order to make it more marketable and easily appreciable by people that were just searching for an entertainment series. And, well, on that regard it worked, almost everyone loved it and it's the #7 anime on MyAnimeList but, well, we all know what tend to be privileged on MAL between marketability/pleasantry and quality/artistic vision P.S. Good video btw, is it possible i've finally found an anglophone manga tuber beside Mark i do not despise? Let's see
@@bison7082 Yes, Totally not Mark is pretty good because while he doesn't know that much about manga he does very good narrative analysis, this guy seems pretty good, the rest is a dumpster fire of "subjectivity" (= i'm not able to explain my opinion)
@@gto462 I don't know, the video also showing some of Togashi's clean art style, and its pretty good really. A clean art style makes the reader able to discern what's happening, where the character's are, what will happen, etc. A messy sketches/drawing makes the reader confuse.
5:20 I do not think this is true though in all cases. For example the panel you showed of gon and killua partying on greed island (5:14) was improved in the volume release, and a lot of other panels were aswell.
At 5:20 the chapter I’ve cited remains as it is shown, I wasn’t clear enough that those others got improved but yeah, chapter 337 specifically did not get improved.
I'm very simple. I hear the 99' OST, I start crying, I subscribe. Good video my dude 👍 Finally someone who addresses the art of HxH without simply going "haha, it bad"
A bit unclear that many of the "weird/unfinished" looking pages did get overworked and looked normal in the volume release. I really liked the rest of the video, though :)
thanks for the video, I was waiting for an artistic evolution video and wondering if you made it about hunter and Togashi, and here you are as I wished, thanks, maybe u can make it about Tokyo Ghoul next time, cause it has more than good artistic evolution with Sui Ishida, thanks very much.
gotta love hxh content, truly the most underrated masterpiece of our time. Edit: One thing I would be remiss to say, is Togashi not only understand how to draw like a master but he's also a master of panel layout and composition. His understanding of sequential art/manga is masterful in every capacity.
I have seen several other mangas that adopted the no background style mentioned in this video. However, many of those were, in my opinion, due to the artists' lack of skills. A few of them barely draw the faces with the correct perspective. But I still read some of the them because the stories were interesting.
that picture people show to talk about bad togashi drawings are not even seen the inkling that he had to do it on the background and the tree in between to me that are not bad drawings and bad drawing do not exist.
Honestly I don't even think it should be taking seriously.. like picking a few panels that aren't complete is kinda ignoring the rest the polish complete ones imo
I totally understand why his art seems so simple and not detailed; because of his back pain. Despite me appreciating the work he has done considering his health problems, the art is as I said very simple or simplistic, with no details. Sometimes I can't undetstand what he is drawing, what he is trying to portray in the manga (in the succession arc that I have read up to a point) which is obviously a bad thing for me because I want to see clearly the panels, not having to squint my eyes and 'try' to see, looking at the panels over and over again to undestand some times. It is the same as One piece; very unclear art, I don't like it at all. It is my view, don't start barking like dogs.
If you type in “Artistic Evolution of Bleach” on RU-vid there’s a great vid out there on it! The guy asked me permition to make it too, bless him, so give it a view 😁
I really, really, really don't like how he draws. His background is amazing but his characters are mediocre. Not the design but how they're drawn. That's just me tho.
It should be called a novelution really, of how much fucking texts there is. A devolved form of his old artistic style, not caring about the background or anything, just the characters. Not saying it's a bad thing, nor its a good one. Its just a decent shonen, even a seinen at some points.
The dumb amount of text has always been there, even during the heaven's arena arc when Nen got instrocuced, is nothing new, we just got less patient due to the time we gotta wait for the continuation but the long winded exposition has always been a feature on HxH
